Vlyn, in Question about Android. Is there a way to replace the system file manager on non-rooted devices?

Can’t you just install another file manager and then change the default app?

thegreekgeek,
@thegreekgeek@midwest.social avatar

Don’t think that’s an option really, the file manager is like the android version of the open file dialog in Windows now. Ever since they implimented secure app storage. Like op replied to you it’s mostly hard coded in the apps or something. It’s gonna get worse too, pretty sure android 12 made it so you can’t use a third party camera for pictures taken through other apps, and on my OP9 Pro you can’t select a alternative gallery app.

Slow,

How? There is no pop-up window with options. I think the call to the system file manager is written into the code of some applications.

Vlyn,

Ah, so even when resetting the default app there is still no popup? That sucks :-/

HamSwagwich, in How do you work full-time and stay awake all shift?

Wow… Literally nobody has mentioned the easiest solution? Get enough sleep and use a regular bedtime?

Just getting “enough” sleep for a few nights isn’t going to work. You need to go to bed at the same time every night and get enough restful sleep for months so your body is on a schedule. Then you won’t be tired during the day.

If you are, you may not be getting restful sleep and you need to investigate that.

For me, it was a CPAP. I’m physically fit, normal weight, healthy otherwise, but I was having obstructive sleep apnea. Getting a CPAP was a night and day difference, as my sleep is much more restful and restorative.

It’s my bike, I ride my bike.

Indoors, I’ve got Zwift, which looks a bit like a game.

Outdoors the resolution is better, but the NPCs can be belligerent.

Thermal_shocked,

Lol

DarkThoughts, in What show is as entertainingly bad as Fear The Walking Dead?

TWD main show got pretty terrible too. It's sad because FTWD definitely had some good moments too and at a certain point it even looked like it improved a bit again. But now it feels just like some trash tier zombie show.

swordsmanluke, in What game do you play to just chill?

No Man’s Sky.

After the mildly stressful intro (which isn’t bad, just uses more sticks than carrots in the tutorial section), you basically just pick a direction and go.

If you wanna quest, there are quests available in (almost) every system.

If you wanna farm, pick a nice planet and get to building.

If you wanna fight, go find a planet with hostile Sentinel presence.

There’s always something interesting to do, but you can also just find a nice view on some planet, build a couch and just watch the iridescent grass blow in the wind for a bit.

DashboTreeFrog,

The more I hear about No Man’s Sky now the more I’m thinking that perhaps this will be one of the games I can chill out to. I generally love space games, and the idea of just kinda flying around doing random stuff is already appealing.

GenesisJones,

Its a vastly game than it was at launch. It’s on my list to play.

As someone with almost 500h in NMS, get in fully aware that things get repetitive fast. Once you get off planet and can visit other stars the first time, it’ll likely take 2 hours to see all different kinds of planets.

Unlocking (“learning”) the 3 aliens’ languages is the absolute worst slog in the whole game.

Another ultra tedious chore is doing the daily missions for Quicksilver (special currency) to unlock some nifty cosmetics.

Also, combat sucks. It just plain sucks. The most annoying thing to me is: if you don’t fire your weapon for 1 or 2 seconds, your dude will put it down, which will create a small time window where you’ll have a significant delay between pressing the fire button and actually firing, because of the animation.

zeppo, in Can licking an iron bar get you the daily recommended amount of iron?
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Licking a rusty bar seems like it would be a good way to abrade your tongue and contract tetanus.

FishFace,

Tetanus is a bacteria that lives in soil. It’s only associated with rust because rust gives more surface area to allow dirt to accumulate on which bacteria can survive, and because iron objects are often sharp enough to pierce the skin. If you were cut with a gleaming razer that had just had soil smeared on it you’d have a good chance of contracting tetanus!

shinigamiookamiryuu,

Does that mean I can get tetanus by walking around barefoot outside?

FishFace,

If your feet get cut, sure. This is why tetanus vaccine is given as post-exposure prophylaxis in many places if you get a wound that breaks the skin.

monotremata, (edited )

It's also because the bacterium in question is anaerobic, so it dies in an oxygen environment; rusting consumes oxygen, so it helps preserve the bacterium longer out of soil.

Edit: I had always been told this, but evidently it isn't true. The rust does not seem to have any effect on the bacterium that causes tetanus. Apologies for spreading misinformation.

FishFace,

I’d be quite surprised if rusting could consume oxygen fast enough to make a difference there?

Typhoonigator,

Yeah, this is a strange mix of information being conveyed. Tetanus is indeed caused by an anaerobe, and it’s caused by a puncturing wound. The depth of the wound is what causes the oxygen-free environment. The correlation with iron, from my understanding, is solely because a nail can easily cause such a puncture. A nail stepped on in the general environment can easily innoculate the wound with with the relatively common Clostridium tetani bacteria, which causes tetanus. I don’t think rust is a factor, though I’ve been wrong before.

monotremata,

Yeah, you're right. This is something I was taught at one point, and I guess I never questioned it because it sounded plausible. Sorry! I have updated my comment to reflect this.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

So, I don’t know where this iron bar is coming from.

Surdon, (edited ) in What game do you play to just chill?

FTL, Stardew valley, No mans sky, Minecraft, Old rpgs like Chrono Trigger

shamrt,

I don’t exactly experience a tonne of chill while playing FTL

DashboTreeFrog,

FTL is a great chill out game for me. The only problem is I’ve put in so many hours that I’ve practically seen everything! I looked into some interesting mods but just haven’t tried them out yet. When I think about it, FTL shouldn’t be that chill, but there’s a certain simplicity in the gameplay, and the ability to pause all the time, even during combat, gives me the ability to take my time thinking through what I’m gonna do.

Underrated chill out game, agreed, maybe I’ll finally get around to trying some mods.

Surdon,

Yeah I haven’t tried the mods either and I kinda suck at the game but I’ve always felt like it has a low cost to entry, which is why it feels chill to me. A lot of death anxiety in games is due to time investment and, frankly, like BOTW, fear of long loading screens more than any in game punishment.

Ftl has such a satisfying and similar gameplay loop and allows so much pausing that it doesn’t really feel stressful for me. I still hate dying and do it a lot in the game, but I can play ftl with a sort of soft mental focus that many other games don’t allow me to do

It’s possible to buy repairable shoes. They are just not as trendy or cheap as the mass produced fast fashion counterparts.

Kyle, in My beagle has suddenly started resource guarding random stuff. What should I do to get this behavior to stop?

Just because your parents have dogs doesn’t mean they can offer a safe environment or know what to do with them. All the changes and the environment posed for your dog are incredibly stressful for the dog. Please be compassionate that your dog is going through more than you even though you literally broke your leg and probably experienced the worst pain in your life. Changes in living situations are the biggest adjustments for dogs ever.

Please don’t listen to people suggesting anything with the word dominance, pack mentality, wolf study, punishment or anything forcefull. All of that is guaranteed to make things worse.

A certified trainer (CCPDT and the various acronyms associated, the dog academy, anyone force force free) will get you on course faster than any website or book.

If you want your dog to make it out of this, your dog has to be a priority, make it your part time job.

My quick advice if you can’t afford a trainer and will only look up free internet advice from strangers:

Start with giving them something low value to chew on in a distraction free room. Have 10 minutes worth of super high value treats. When they are chewing the low value, walk up to them and give them the treat. Let them chew on the low value again. Repeat. Try for 10 minutes at a time. Adjust value of chew and treat so they don’t react when you walk up to them.

Next session, If they start wagging their tail when you approach. Try making it harder by taking the item for 1 second then, give them the treat then give it back. Ramp up duration or value of chew and items as progress is made

All of this has to be a happy and joyful affair. You are using a happy and friendly puppy voice the whole time. The dog has to feel good about this the whole time. So make sure you and the dog are in as good of a place mentally when doing it. This will all be harder if the dog doesn’t have other prerequisites like a leave it or drop it command.

There are so many ways you need to modify the above strategy for your particular dog that I can’t stress enough how valuable you’ll find a certified force free trainer to be. A vet check might also be suggested by the trainer. I think my advice is barely scratching the surface of what to do and how to do it, I haven’t even met your dog so what do I even know? Very little!

If you need proof that force free methods are a way, the AVSAB statements are quick and easy to read with tonnes of source citations: avsab.org/resources/position-statements/

GissaMittJobb, in Why has YouTube introduced support for multiple audio tracks for videos only now?

It was not impossible to implement, no. We can only guess as to why it wasn’t implemented, but if I had to guess, I’d say it’s simply not been prioritized.

crypticthree, in Why has YouTube introduced support for multiple audio tracks for videos only now?

It just wasn’t a priority. It doesn’t impact the bottom line so it didn’t get a significant amount of investment

didnt_readit, in Why has YouTube introduced support for multiple audio tracks for videos only now?

Because their product team is incompetent?

residentmarchant,

Not to come to their defense, I don’t like most of what they do, but when you have multiple billion users, every “small change” you make or feature you add is a significant investment in planning, building, and testing.

AmosBurton,

As one of the largest companies on the globe, that’s not an excuse. They should have the manpower and procedures in place to streamline these tasks.
