scytale, in Which carbonated soft drink is the best?

Sugar-free Canada Dry Ginger Ale.

aliceblossom, in Which carbonated soft drink is the best?

Huge soda fan so picking just one is super hard but I’d say:

Oronamin C or Sweet Blossom’s Rose soda

Oronamin C is a Japanese soft drink with a taste that is often described as “drinking (American) Smarties”. It’s incredibly refreshing and delicious. Sweet Blossom is I think an eastern European beverage company and they make a rose flavored soda that is to die for. It has far and away my favorite quality of carbonation (very fine, soft bubbles).

Other honorable mentions include Ocean Bomb: Sailor Mercury (i.e. pear flavor), and as a big fan of cherry colas, Bawls Guarana Cherry Cola and Fentiman’s Cherry Tree Cola.

Gladiator, it seemed like in the ending rome may have had hope in survival but Commodus damage became the first stepping stone that led to the fall of the roman empire.

littlebluespark,
@littlebluespark@lemmy.world avatar

If we’re counting stones for that particular thread of the timeline, there were countless prior to Commodus’ pile.

outrageousmatter,
@outrageousmatter@lemmy.world avatar

True, there was many but commodus I think was the stepping stone to the fall as the shithead essentially almost bankrupted rome and caused civil wars since he was so shitty he did not have a kid.

Ask if an episode of Inanimate Insanity actually released on December 37, 2074. And no, I did not write that incorrectly by mistake. I actually meant to say December Thirty-Seventh.

Here in Morocco, there’s a soda brand called Ice. It’s pretty good, but that name is just absolutely ridiculous.

The skeleton key isn’t really worth it. Picks are plentiful and lock picking is pretty easy.

There is also a perk in the lock picking skill tree (the last one) that makes it irrelevant. Though I do recommend a mod that allows you to skip the otherwise useless legs in the skill tree you would need to take first.

radix, in Does "Rock music is evil / of the devil" have racist roots?
@radix@lemmy.world avatar

Tangential to the question, but Elvis was famously censored from the waist down in an early TV appearance for being too sexy. Then, of course, lots and lots of rock in the ‘free love’ 60s and 70s was explicitly about drugs.

Going from ‘sex and drugs’ to ‘of the devil’ is a pretty short line to draw for some people.

HelixDab2, in What salary do you think would make you happy?

I don’t have a solid answer.

Money alone isn’t going to make me happy. Yeah, it removes a lot of one type of stress. But it can also be a trap. Like, I’m doing solidly okay in my job, but it’s enough that I can’t easily quit and start over in a different career, even though I stopped caring about this one a decade ago. And a high-paying job can come with a lot of other stressors, things that keep you working harder and longer hours than you otherwise would.

$100k would probably seem pretty good for a long time, given where I currently live. If I had to live in NYC, I’d probably say more like $500k.

Chainweasel, in What salary do you think would make you happy?

Enough that I’m not completely broke before my next paycheck.
Seriously, that’s all it would take for me to be happy, a little bit of disposable income.

MuhammadJesusGaySex, (edited ) in What is your best story when you were in a foreign country?

So I’m walking around a bazaar in Nepal. I got kids following me everywhere begging for money. Out of nowhere a Nepalese guy wearing a ripped up shirt comes running up and starts slapping kids and yelling at them. The kids run off and the man starts cozying up to me.

He starts asking where I’m from and follows me around for a while. Finally he cuts the foreplay and asks if I “smoke hashish”. I say yeah and we talk about that a while. He asked where I was staying and I told him Hotel Yak and Yetti. He says he’ll come by and smoke with me.

So, at the time he was supposed to show up I’m in the lobby when a hotel worker comes over and says that someone is looking for me. I walk outside and the dude is now wearing a tailored suit and is motioning for me to get in a cab.

Alarm bells go off, but fuck it you only live once. I get in the back of the cab with the guy. He has a pack of cigarettes where he emptied out the tobacco and filled them with weed. He says his cousin is the driver. We ride and smoke. I got so fucken high.

Then he’s like hey buy the rest of this pack from me. I was like dude I don’t have much money. He’s asks if I have some clothes that don’t fit. I’m 6’2” this guy was like 5’. But I’m like yeah and gave him 2 pairs of jeans.

Then I had to flush the weed because I was getting on a plane to Tibet the next morning. Staying in a Chinese prison wasn’t on my itinerary. So I had to leave the weed behind.

clay_pidgin,

Bizarre. What do you think his story was?

MuhammadJesusGaySex,

I have no idea, but looking back on it this is my guess. I was 18 at the time. I am like I said 6’2” which is way taller than most people there. I am white and at the time had long hair that was done in Bo Derek micro braids.

My guess is he moves weight in weed and hash. He saw some guy looking like a hippy from the US and decided to feel me out. They were super nice.

conciselyverbose, in Question for legal folks: Travel based abortion restrictions

It will never get ruled on because the core concept is so obscenely unconstitutional that it doesn't matter.

PrinceWith999Enemies,

I know. Or at least I really hope so.

I’m more interested in the theoretical question.

I was also wondering if it would be possible to make it illegal to have had an abortion. The analogy that comes to mind is that cannabis is legal in California, but if you fly back to Texas and still have it in your system, I think you can be busted because there’s specific laws against testing positive (iirc). I’ve never heard of anyone getting charged for coming home high from California, so I have no idea whether it would pass a challenge.

Zak,
@Zak@lemmy.world avatar

The US constitution forbids states from creating ex post facto crimes, and the jurisdiction of state laws does not extend into other states. Texas cannot make it a crime to have an abortion in California, nor to have previously had an abortion in California.

Texas may be able to make it a crime to leave Texas for the purpose of having an abortion. That would make creating any evidence of the reason for travel, or providing explanations to authorities dangerous.

PrinceWith999Enemies,

I just want to make sure I understand your answer. I’m going back to the cannabis example to make sure I’m clear in terms of what I’m saying and understanding.

Texas cannot make it illegal to smoke pot in California. We are on the same page there. Texas can however make it illegal to have drugs in your system while in Texas. If you get back from CA and test positive in Texas, I believe you can be charged for having drugs in your system. For instance, you will probably go back to jail if you test positive while on parole. I don’t want the parole thing to confuse the issue - the point is that smoking in CA is not what’s illegal. Being in TX with drugs in your system can be.

This isn’t ex post facto because the law against having terminated your pregnancy would have existed before the patient traveled.

What I’m thinking about specifically is the concern many people have about things like menstrual tracking apps being used by law enforcement to determine if someone was pregnant and now is not. To my reasoning, that means that the concern is ipso facto the termination.

And I agree on keeping any conversations about it in a manner that a prosecutor would be unable to use them to show motivation for travel. I mentioned that when o was asking whether it would be a reasonable defense if/when someone were to be charged (pretending that it doesn’t get overturned).

Zak,
@Zak@lemmy.world avatar

Texas can however make it illegal to have drugs in your system while in Texas

I’m not sure that’s actually a crime in Texas (please link a law if you know of one), and using it as evidence of prior drug possession is legally iffy as this Ohio case shows. In your example of consuming cannabis in California before traveling to Texas, it would be an even more difficult case for Texas prosecutors.

I don’t want the parole thing to confuse the issue

It does though; parole can include restrictions like “pass random drug tests”, “don’t drink alcohol”, etc… that can’t be imposed on people without a prior criminal conviction. It’s probably best to leave parole out of the discussion entirely.

the concern is ipso facto the termination.

When it comes to an abortion outside the state, the laws I’m aware of concern travel for the purpose of abortion. An alternate purpose for the travel could be useful as a defense, but that’s best delivered by one’s lawyer after charges are filed.

gravitas_deficiency,

Narrator:

Weeks later, Ken Paxton, the notoriously embattled Texas AG who has been under investigation for corruption for years, announced intent to prosecute Texans who have abortions out of the state, regardless of the obvious conflicts with federal law.
