Jonnsy, in What movie or book had the biggest impact on you this year?

Planet of exile by Ursula K. Le Guin

llamapocalypse,

I love the Hainish cycle, such beautiful writing and characters.

solitaire, in What movie or book had the biggest impact on you this year?

It’s kind of been a shallow year for both books and movies in terms of impact on me. That’s not to say it’s been a bad year for them, but it’s mostly been just ‘enjoyable’.

That said, it was probably Radicalized by Cory Doctorow. It’s a collection of four novellas that follow different characters pushed into different kinds of extremist action. The one where people start murdering health insurers was particularly heavy.

Devi, in How to pull rocks out of pipe in the ground?

Blue tack and a stick? Like stick the rocks to it then pull out?

micek, in What's your favorite instrument that really gets through to you?

Most instruments played well grips my heart and holds. But steelpan. People see it as something carnival something something, but it fits well for a surprisingly wide span of music! The power of the bass pans in death metal as much as the “synthiness” in a melody from some NES game, it fits!

ohlaph, in What is your favorite part of the day?

My favorite time of day? It’s that serene moment in the early evening when the sky transitions into a canvas of pastel hues. It’s when I savor a slice of grape cheesecake, relishing the burst of flavors that dance on my taste buds. Amidst this tranquil time, my mischievous cat seems to shed a flurry of hair, marking its playful antics throughout the day. And in the distance, the rhythmic bleats of goats offer a soothing backdrop, a reminder of nature’s harmonious chorus. That’s when the day’s chaos settles, and a quiet calmness envelops everything.

But usually none of that happens, I’m snapped back to reality and begin my nightly cry.

cheese_greater, (edited ) in What's your favorite instrument that really gets through to you?

Vibraphone

Very cool too and vaguely consistent with my other picks. They’re all metallic percussive keyboard type instruments involving mallets to some extent

Edit: Metallophones seem to be my sweet spot, in terms of instrument category

Nachorella, in WTF species of spider is this

I recognise these little scamps. They’re pretty cute.

Rhynoplaz, in When/how do you think capitalism will be defeated?

When the poor have more money than the rich and are willing to give it up.

DarkGamer, in When/how do you think capitalism will be defeated?
@DarkGamer@kbin.social avatar

Through abundance it will defeat itself by working too well. Approaching full automation the only way for capitalism to survive is via UBI, otherwise there will be no consumer markets. When we have enough productive capacity and sufficient UBI that everyone is wealthy without having to work, a society like the Federation from Star Trek becomes possible. When everyone has enough wealth that hoarding it becomes meaningless, we might achieve something like a communist society.

"Hoarding" or controlling resources will be always meaningful. There is limited amount of accessible matter, and even if all basic needs of every human is satisfied, people have inspirations to do things, including BIG things, and for that they need resources. The only way we might have something like communist society is if AI takes control, and no human is controlling anything of a value. Kind of like a "Culture" series of books by M. Banks. Or if we go completely virtual, but even then, the computation resource is of the value...

CascadianGiraffe, in How to pull rocks out of pipe in the ground?

A coiled wire screwed to the end of the stick (like a spring). Jam over the rock and pull up.

Fiivemacs,

Or put silicone on tip of stick, glue to rock, cut stick, apply more silicone and repeat until empty.

Varyk, in How to pull rocks out of pipe in the ground?

Long spoons. Or a backscratcher would work.

sin_free_for_00_days,

I did not think of a long spoon. I’ll give that a try. Thanks.

jol, in I am to celebrate new years eve alone. How can I celebrate solo?

For reasons, I’m also. Having some fancy dinner and watching the fireworks. Already made friends with the table next to mine, an older fun couple visiting from Sweden.

psion1369, in How to stop eating junk food?

I said this in another comment, get a water bottle. Our bodies use hunger knowing real food has water in it. But if the water isn’t working out for you, try switching the snacks to something that might be up your alley. Instead of a chip dip or cheese, try salsa. Someone suggested carrot or celery sticks, get a jar of peanut butter just to dip them in. Carrots and peanut butter is amazing. And to make meal time better, start cooking yourself. Watch a ton of cooking videos on YouTube and try making some easy recipes.

Ziglin, in How to stop eating junk food?

Get lazy enough not to get up and get it, then it’s easier to go longer without it and eventually (I think 1-2 weeks) you’ll probably not even feel hungry for snacks.
