smashboy, in A man carrying many baskets on his head, Covent Garden, London, 1926-1927.

My dudes, what is going on with all the baskets today?

at_an_angle,

Basket carrying needs to be brought back!

Algaroth, in Porter practicing for basket head-carrying championships (no, really!), London, 1925

This is what life was like before TV. “Come watch some dude with a bunch of baskets on his head! It will be the highlight of your week!” And it was.

ZoopZeZoop,

Life is still like that, except we need our dopamine drip. People do crazy shit and post videos. So, we use TikTok, YouTube, and whatever else. They are the highlight of that 30 seconds.

I personally enjoy the Half Asleep Chris videos 9n YouTube where he buys a crazy amount of one set or a crazy number of sets and puts them all together. He has 10 rollercoaster sets and put them together as one. He has 10 castle sets and put them (along with a few thousand other related bricks) together to make a giant castle. Plus, he is quirky and fun, seemingly writes all the music on his videos, and includes his cats in most videos (or the cats include themselves).

custard_swollower, in Barricade during the Battle of Cable Street (a clash between British police enabling a fascist march and anti-fascist activists), 1936

TIL this is one of the inspirations for Night Watch book by Terry Pratchett

MajorHavoc,

Oh, wow. Neat!

Night Watch is such a good book.

I am more impressed that he carried them for a whole year! Even one basket on his head for a year would have been impressive.

athos77,

lmao. Maybe this was taken New Year's Eve :)

andthenthreemore, in Barricade during the Battle of Cable Street (a clash between British police enabling a fascist march and anti-fascist activists), 1936

Are they empty?

PugJesus,
@PugJesus@kbin.social avatar

Not sure about this particular pic, but I know that porters at this time would carry multiple filled baskets like this, and that human beings can carry and balance a surprising amount of weight on their heads.

eestileib, in One more basket carrier for the road! 20 baskets on his head, count 'em! London, 1925

Dudes on the left are also agog.

NigelFrobisher, in Porter with a basket on his head, London, 1877

Tell me you have lumbar issues without telling me you have lumbar issues.

PugJesus,
@PugJesus@kbin.social avatar

Apparently it was a tradition to see who could stack the most filled baskets on their heads. Oh, I found another good one! I'll post it too.

bigbluealien, in Barricade during the Battle of Cable Street (a clash between British police enabling a fascist march and anti-fascist activists), 1936
@bigbluealien@kbin.social avatar

Now we have a home secretary enabling fascists while the police man the barricades, which I guess is progress

andthenthreemore,

She needs to be arrested for incitement of violence.

Jeff, in Color photo of women buying from an Ice Cream Car, UK, 1928

Delicious … comets? That’s awesome though in any event.

Cornets, I think, meaning an ice cream cone.
