FlyingSquid, in Aboriginal Australians used as forced labor by European settlers, 1902
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

That enormous cockhole Rolf Harris sung about this in Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport like it was no big deal. And it was a huge hit and no one said anything.

Anticorp,

I can’t speak for anyone else, but the lyrics you wrote are the only lyrics to the entire song that I know, and I’ve always thought it was just some weird gibberish. Granted, I’ve never actively listened to it or sought it out, I’ve only heard it in passing.

floofloof,

en.wikipedia.org/…/Tie_Me_Kangaroo_Down,_Sport

There was an offensive verse in the original song, later deleted. But this is far from the most offensive thing about Rolf Harris.

Didn’t know Australians still had slavery so late in history.

PugJesus,
@PugJesus@kbin.social avatar

Formally, it wasn't slavery. Effectively, it was.

Poop,

I’m seeing chains on necks, looks like slavery to me. Even if they were prisoners, that is inhumane.

Fucking greasy to think it’s so close to recent history.

Spuddlesv2,

It was still happening in the 1970’s.

520,

The current US prison system is effectively legalised slavery, and is a big reason why US system doesn't do reform and incentives recedivism

okamiueru, (edited )

Still literally in the US constitution. 13th:

Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction

Tyfud,

And it only took the bloodiest civil war in history, a war we’re still paying the price for not going the extra mile and abolishing the southern states and replacing them with Union members.

MindSkipperBro12,

Such is the price to end slavery in America and advance the worldwide abolitionist movement.

And I wish federal occupation had lasted significantly longer, enough to replace the older generation with a enlightened, Yankee way of thinking and attitude. That or go the route of Jacob Smith and just shoot about everyone above the age of ten and sell all the land for cheap.

Isoprenoid,

Mate, its more recent than you think.

doesn’t count if you don’t think those wearing chains are people.

cjsolx, (edited )

What gets me is that yeah that’s their excuse, but if someone treated, say, an orangutan or a baboon like this I’d think that was pretty fucked up too. We were so gross. We still are (dog fighting, circus elephants etc) but the cruelty that we’re capable of without what is essentially moral peer pressure, is chilling to think about. Even today we fight tooth and nail against moral progress and treating everyone with respect.

Gold_E_Lox,

hahahahaha you think this is late???

Smoogs,

Aboriginals we’re even denied a seat in politics just in the last few months. I remember being shocked they voted in Tony abbot …who for years screamed about women’s menstruation in parliament. Australia is super backwards.

Couldbealeotard,
@Couldbealeotard@lemmy.world avatar

Abbott was also appointed Minister for Women.

The Voice which, if I understand correctly, wasn’t an offer of a seat in parliament, it was a constitutional amendment that would allow an advisory board for Aboriginal and Torres strait islanders. They wouldn’t have had any actual power any way.

sharkfucker420, (edited )
@sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml avatar

America still had slavery in the 1940s when the last slave was freed (might’ve been later than that) and it still has slavery in the form of prison labor

raynethackery,

Can you tell me more about that?

sharkfucker420,
@sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml avatar

A_cook_not_a_chef,

And we still have slavery. It is legal per the 13th amendment. Disgusting.

Anticorp,

China still has slavery today.

novibe,

Also India, many places in Europe, the Arab states, South and North America. Or do you mean China is specially “slavey”?

sharkfucker420,
@sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml avatar

I mean sure maybe idk anything about china. What made you bring it up?

They didn’t even class indigenous Australians as people, until late 1960’s. They were considered fauna.

Is it ? Australia hold a référendum this year to give a bit more rights to native people. They voted against it.

Deceptichum,
@Deceptichum@kbin.social avatar

Yes?

I am Australian. And the vote wasn’t about rights, it was about representation.

Floufym,
@Floufym@lemmy.world avatar

You can use the wording you want, Australia is a racist country that shows no respect to the native people.

Deceptichum,
@Deceptichum@kbin.social avatar

I’ll take solace in knowing we will never be as racist as Europeans. Because we’re a proud multicultural country and you’re the lot who keep toying with nationalism and genocide.

You would never hear anyone in Australia mutter the vile hate they spew towards Romani. And their treatment of refugees is so bad, that they make us look good in comparison.

At the end of the day, outside of say NZ/Canada you will not find a less racist country.

So cry all you want.

Floufym,
@Floufym@lemmy.world avatar

He, it is not a contest. I never say Europe was less racist than other country/area. Just I don’t hide by using some words to softening the reality.

I don’t try to move away the initial discussion : we don’t care if it is true or not that native people where considered as fauna. The point was native people are considered as second class people, that do not deserve respect, unfortunately.

Deceptichum, (edited )
@Deceptichum@kbin.social avatar

That’s not softening reality.

The recently failed referendum gave zero rights to Aboriginal people. That was never the intention, because they already have the same rights.

The Voice is one part of the healing process, to misframe it as something else only helps the people who voted against it.

You’re obviously not equipped enough to understand the situation.

They look like they don’t give a shit. What is the story of this photo?

PugJesus,
@PugJesus@kbin.social avatar

Aboriginal Australians were often arrested on spurious charges, such as 'Entering city limits while Aboriginal', and given long prison sentences, after which they were rented out as convict labor, chained to prevent escape. This is just one group of such folk.

Slowy,
@Slowy@lemmy.world avatar

What’s up with the scarring(?) on their chests?

Nythos,

Probably from whipping but because it’s on their chest it’s possible it’s purposeful scarification

Anticorp,

No, they did it to themselves. Look up aboriginal scarring. It was body art.

Nythos,

So then it’s purposeful scarification like I said it was possible to be.

DillyDaily,

That’s part of ceremonial scarification, there are several mobs and groups of indigenous peoples where this is a sacred cultural practice.

Though in many cases the British used the evidence of ritual scarification as some kind of proof that aboriginal people didn’t feel pain the same way Europeans did, so you had to whip them harder and longer than white prisoners for the same transgressions.

Slowy,
@Slowy@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks for the details, I assumed something cultural because of the consistent horizontal orientation - it would have to be an extremely specific whipping technique to create those. It’s a shame colonizers and slavers used that practice as reason to hurt them even more, though…

Lowpast, (edited ) in Aboriginal Australians used as forced labor by European settlers, 1902

Could be the low resolution/beards but I am honestly surprised at how similar everyone looks. I guess that’s how it is as an island aboriginal - not a lot of genes to mix

DillyDaily,

Ah yes, just a tiny 7,692,024 km2 island, just a quick 150km Kai Marina sailing trip from PNG and Indonesia.

Human genome studies continue to explore the the genetic diversity of indigenous Australians, as it’s a key to help understand early human migration. ABC summary of the genome report.

Australia is really not that much smaller than the lower 48 of the USA, and yet people (mostly Americans) seem to think it’s some tiny rural island.

Aussiemandeus,

Theres every chance they’re all closely related too.

Australia is a big place but people didnt travel far

Annoyed_Crabby,

I think the similarity is due to their facial expression, caused by them being displayed like item under bright sunlight.

Rolando,

Well, they all have the same expression on their faces, probably because there’s only one way to feel when you’re chained up and made to sit on the floor while someone takes your picture.

DragonTypeWyvern,

Did your dumbass really just look at a group of slaves and say “Wow they all look the same to me, they must be inbred?”

What the fuck is wrong with your brains, Lemmy?

cjsolx,

Lol, it is easier to distinguish between people of your own culture, that’s been tested. That said, it was a real dumb thing to say.

Gigan, in Nazi shithead rally in Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1938
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

Why were there so many nazi’s in Argentina?

PugJesus,
@PugJesus@kbin.social avatar

Lots of German immigrants in Argentina; Nazi Germany utilized German communities in other countries to spread their vile ideology, where possible.

After WW2, there were also lots of German 'immigrants' to Argentina... though that later immigration wave has more to do with the fascist-sympathizing dictator in charge at the time.

jungle,

Many German immigrants came from the other side too, both before and after the war.

cosmicrookie,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

Wouldn’t that make them refugees and not immigrants?

PugJesus, (edited )
@PugJesus@kbin.social avatar

Refugees are generally expected to return to their country of origin. The Nazis fleeing to Argentina had 0 chance or intention of returning to Allied-controlled Germany where many were wanted as war criminals.

SuckMyWang,

You mean shithead nazis

rockSlayer,

You might also be surprised at the attendance for the Madison Square Garden Nazi rally in 1939.

PugJesus, (edited )
@PugJesus@kbin.social avatar

While Madison Square Garden had prepared itself for the German Bund, many around New York City considered the Nazi sect less welcome in their city. About 100,000 anti-Nazi protesters gathered around the arena in protest of the Bund, carrying signs stating "Smash Anti-Semitism" and "Drive the Nazis Out of New York".[6] A total of three attempts were made to break the arm-linking lines of police, the first of these, a group of World War One Veterans, wrapped in Stars and Stripes, were held off by police on mounted horseback, the next, a "burly man carrying an American flag" and finally, a Trotskyist group known as the Socialist Workers Party, who like those before, had their efforts halted by police.[4]

I love that the lone burly man carrying an American flag was disruptive enough in attempting to get through the police line to warrant mention.

lnsfw3,

he was burly

Thassodar,

1930s burl was a whole different beast lol
