The state of the internet in 2023.
As we look back on 2023, I feel we should take stock on what the internet is like for the average person today.

IHeartBadCode, That's just the Web at this point. Like IRC has it's bit of toxic, but there aren't Ads, and the niche stuff is fairly good. Gemini and gopher are seeing a pretty healthy resurgence, but clearly there's just dozens of us. Oh and there's always telnet MUDs out there, those are fun every so often.
The Internet is a lot more than just the web. Though the web is mostly the internet at this point. I think the upshot though is all this Fediverse stuff looks really promising. But we ought to support our instances otherwise they'll just start adding ads.
Also as an aside, I'd love for NNTP to make a comeback, but I also understand why it hasn't.
ordellrb, Needs more ads
pivot_root, (edited ) Here, I’ll start:
Are you tired of browsing the internet like a plebian? Are you scared of the big bad man in the middle but don’t know enough about HTTPS and certificates to realize that he can’t do anything unless you install this totally-legitimate root certificate? DO YOU WANT YOUR BANK HACKED?!
You are? Well, great! Get SecurityTheatreVPN today for only $69.69 annually! We don’t protect you from malicious ads serving up zero-day heap overflow exploits or Google embedding tracking into your browser, but at least Comcast won’t need to know the kind of kinky shit you’re in to.
SecurityTheaterVPN—We’re the TSA of the internet, so you know you’re in trusted hands.
Kalkaline, I see my comments and complete lack of original content in there.
don, I may be a simple person, but I recognize a Twitter when I see it.
Drinvictus, Not lemmy my friend. lemmy is an oasis in the desert
FlyingSquid, For now. Threads is about to federate. The enshittification of federated forums has begun.
pivot_root, (edited ) It’s more like finding a working car in the middle of an oversized dump. Trash everywhere as far as the eye can see, but at least I can turn on the air conditioning now.
WashedOver, With the articles and comments I’ve read in the past few months one could have a hard time not seeing what’s left of Twitter in this photo…
penquin, Quite literally.
ivanafterall, I see some of my posts mixed in there!
