calzone_gigante, in Is anyone using awk?

Yes, for things too complex to do in sed but not complex enough to need a “normal” programming language like python.

does this mean steve ballmer was right?

Oh wow I didn’t realize he repeated ‘developers, developers, …’ 666 times on that event.

muhyb, in Linux Boomers

Seems like you just found an excuse for your unnecessary invectiveness. You probably think you’re funny or you’re trolling. This is not even trolling, not even fourth-class bait material. Maybe you should try Kali, suits your attitude more.

BaumGeist, in Linux Boomers

Uncharitability to those you disagree with, style without substance, and all built upon thought-terminating cliches.

This isn’t helpful or enlightening or informative, it’s entertaining but not in an interesting nor original way. It reminds me of 2010s Reddit memes where everything was about adding as many “fucks” as possible because our moms aren’t supervising our internet time anymore. It espouses a consoomer mindset of “gotta have bigger numbers and shinier visuals because all that matters is appealing to lizard-brain.”

And it’s all couched in the obvious mindset that any criticism will be met with “ok boomer” (I’ll almost be insulted if I don’t get one) because being superior is more important than being right. Y’know… like a boomer?

You’ve got a point, focus on that: you can make the case that Linux fits your use case, or that certain mindsets within the Linux community are hindering progress. But please do so in a way that doesn’t just lend itself to more infighting and drama. That shit is for shallow people who have nothing to contribute and only serve as the cultural detritus that destroys communities and community-driven projects.

Aatube, in Is it possible to flash a new OS onto an old iPad 2?
@Aatube@kbin.social avatar

https://appledb.dev/device/iPad-2.html Select 9.3.5 and choose the jailbreak method you want. After that, download a newer browser with the jailbreak or even just run Linux on it.

Hmm… maybe they could compile Feenix. Build tools should probably be still available.

RelativeArea0, in recommendations for lightweight window managers for an old netbook
    Bipta, (edited )

Xfce is the best bang for your buck. Lxde isn't much lighter and I never enjoyed using it. I think Lxqt is somewhere between them.

    jsh,

I second xfce. Stable, lightweight, easy to use, and modern (enough).

PlatinumSf, in Is it possible to flash a new OS onto an old iPad 2?

You may try a downloaded browser, they likely ship with a newer version of webkit than what’s on the system or in the store but I’m not 💯 and Google didn’t reveal any clarity on the matter.

I tried all the downloadable browsers. None work in this iOS. :(

    thanks_shakey_snake, in Linux Boomers

    Wow edgy.

Potajito, in USB webcam lagging only in Zoom?

Probably the web app works better than the native app. Also, try the flatpak if you still prefer native, it’s better than what’s on the repos imo.

It does work better for me in general. The video is no longer slow… unless I start using a virtual background, then it gets really sluggish. (Firefox.)

    superbirra, in Linux Boomers

I mean, even my mother who runs kde 5 has a better desktop than the sad one this silly wannabe post. lol

Great, do whatever you want. Just shut the fuck up about it, nobody cares.

You should really take your own advice on this one. That “article” was juvenile.

wuphysics87, in Is anyone using awk?

    I use sed a lot

sxan, in Is anyone using awk?
    @sxan@midwest.social avatar

Nearly every day. There was a time when I’d reach for Ruby, but in the end, the stability, ubiquity, and portability of the traditional Unix tools - among whom awk is counted - turned out to be more useful. I mainly underuse its power, though; it serves as a column aggregator or re-arranger, for the most part.

Mikelius, in Gentoo goes Binary (packages)

Been using Gentoo on my server for over a decade now and probably won’t ever leave the compiling front, especially with a 12-core/24-thread CPU making it go as quick as regular binary updates on my mint laptop… But that being said, in happy to see them considering to do this. It’ll bring in some folks who are afraid of (or just dislike) compiling everything from source. I think the biggest packages that’d benefit from this are definitely the browsers and desktop environments.

starman, in Is anyone using awk?

No, I don’t need it because of jc and nushell
