Quazatron, in The Distro Wars are good actually.?
@Quazatron@lemmy.world avatar

After a while you’ll realise that it’s just healthy competition, not wars.

I use a bunch of distros, just like I have a lot of different tools in my toolbox. Each serves a slightly different function.

Keep in mind that the motto is “World domination,” not “Internal quarrelling”.

I guess Triangles. Most of them are too complicated but I guess they suit the KDE experience

westyvw, in Just about every Windows and Linux device vulnerable to new LogoFAIL firmware attack

Is this potentially useful to me? Since it is persistent, can I use it on this motherboard I have over here that insists on using UEFI even if I do not want to?

ShittyBeatlesFCPres, in I finally switched back to Linux as my daily driver after a couple of years of being on nothing but Windows.

I rarely use Windows but I have a dual boot situation on my desktop PC for the odd game that acts up on Linux or to recreate bug reports. Every time I boot into Windows, I’m like, “Damn, people live like this?” Why does every single thing ask for a reboot? I know the reason but why can’t that be fixed?

xfts,
@xfts@lemmy.world avatar

I’m dualbooting as well, but only because a few games I play aren’t supported on Linux due to their anticheat. Namely Fortnite and Destiny 2. I’d completely switch if that wasn’t the case. Hopefully someday.

@ikidd@lemmy.world avatar

I have almost a dozen installs of it in the wild for a few years now, with friends and relatives that aren’t very computer literate. It has been virtually maintenance free. This is on wildly disparate hardware as well, and it’s always installed nicely and with little messing around after to get things working.

People like to hate on it; it’s been by far the most reliable distro I’ve used, far better than "just works^TM " distros like Fedora and Ubuntu. I’d ignore the naysayers and use if it works for you.

KISSmyOS, in The Distro Wars are good actually.?

I agree that the wealth of distros offers a choice for everyone and shows how much users love Linux as a system and respect the idea of a diverse, global open source community as a whole.

(I use Apartheid Linux btw)

Dr_Willis, (edited ) in Fedora 40 Eyes The Ability To Boot Unified Kernel Images Directly

I am reminded of the ability MANY years ago to write the kernel file directly to a floppy disk, or start of a hard drive and somehow being able to boot that way.

I just can’t recall how I did it, or WHY I did it.

Back when the kernel would fit on a floppy disk. I am truly showing my age.

6 yr old grandson found a box of old floppy disks and was asking what they were. He started stacking them up making card houses and roads for his matchbox cars. Glad he got some use out of those recycled AOL floppies.

I can’t believe stupid, pointless marketing crap didn’t have the best of the best working to ensure security.

Looks interesting, I will look into it. On first look it seems useful

GenesisJones, in What are people daily driving these days?

A Chevy volt. Turns out gm figured out that a PHEV is a great idea 12 years ago

caseyweederman,

What kinda rpms you getting on that

onlinepersona,
  1. It probably uses apks.
GenesisJones,

Not sure, just realized this is a computer post lol

If you want mpg it’s anywhere from 75 to 130mpg per tank of gas.

caseyweederman,

Haha, welcome. rpm was just the first vaguely-car-sounding Linux term I could think of.

GenesisJones,

What is rpms in Linux? I just lurk on /all so I see a ton of Linux stuff that I don’t understand haha

caseyweederman,

RedHat Package Manager. It’s also the file extension for their packages, so you’ll see stuff like firefox_nightly.rpm
