DaveedMee, in Why didn't anyone remind me the dual booting exists?
@DaveedMee@beehaw.org avatar

i dual boot bc of the adobe software i use for work and wine/proton doesn’t work with the shit ton of skyrim mods I play with. straight up crashes.

Astaroth,

re: Skyrim, could just be that some SKSE mod you’re using needs some newer .net runtime or similar

could also be not enough vram (even if you have enough ram wine/proton could have it’s vram allowance set too low)

If you don’t already have one get a crashlogger, for SkyrimSE 1.5.97 I would recommend .NET Script Framework (and use SSE Engine Fixes skse64 preloader instead of DLL Plugin Loader)

If you already knew about all this and still having issues then don’t mind me

SaltyIceteaMaker, in How to see enabled services that have been stopped [systemd]

Can’t you do systemctl status [service] to check that?

ISometimesAdmin,
@ISometimesAdmin@the.coolest.zone avatar

That's only for a single service, not really what OP seems to be asking for

luthis,

Only if you know what the [service] is. In my case, I’m prone to forgetting so this way I can see what should be running but isn’t

SaltyIceteaMaker, in FOUND file in device by hex content using wxHexEditor

Of course that was worth 3 hours. Every tinkering/experimenting is worth it. In the worst case you gain experience

luthis,

Yeah now I stand a better chance of recovering files if something catastrophic happens

Azzk1kr, in FOUND file in device by hex content using wxHexEditor
@Azzk1kr@feddit.nl avatar

You wasted three hours so you can share this knowledge :D

luthis,

True, now you have the power to find your files manually!

MiddledAgedGuy, in My first year using Linux: My experience

I think most of us FOSS folks will agree that GIMP is pretty unintuitive.

Interstellar_1,
@Interstellar_1@pawb.social avatar

Yeah, I just use Krita for the basic things.

kzhe,

Yeah, switched to Photopea

Crabhands,
@Crabhands@lemmy.ml avatar

I’ve been using gimp for years as a Photoshop alternative. Tons of tutorials, and I’ve always been able to do what I needed.

Its great that there are alternatives for those who want them!

averagedrunk,

That’s why way back in the day they had GIMPshop and why there’s PhotoGIMP now.

furycd001,
@furycd001@lemmy.ml avatar

For me GIMP is easier to use than krita, pinta, or any other photo editor on Linux…

Cwilliams,

But how long did it take you to get there? I think the point he was trying to make is that GIMP has a steeper learning curve. If you’ve never used krita/pinta/etc, but you gave a lot experience with GIMP, then yes, GIMP will be easier

furycd001,
@furycd001@lemmy.ml avatar

I’d never used anything & I tried them all. GIMP was by far the easiest for me to learn & I don’t know why. The rest are not in any way bad, I just found GIMP the easiest for whatever reason…

Communist,
@Communist@lemmy.ml avatar

I think a lot of people have already learned some things about it when they try gimp, and then when gimp is completely different, it is rather unintuitive to them, but if you started with gimp, you don’t have that problem

PlexSheep, (edited )

For me, vim is easier to use than vscode and nano. Our experiences don’t reflect that of the majority.

furycd001,
@furycd001@lemmy.ml avatar

Agreed…

davemeech, in An open-source, cross-platform terminal for seamless workflows

I’m looking for a terminal like warp that’s Linux compatible and this initially looked promising but the comments on how bloated it is is discouraging.

mojo, in Hyprland is a toxic community

this guy just learned about discord general chats lol

they’re all this bad, and also they’re absolutely dogshit for open source software so I have no idea why people make them

moonpiedumplings,

I’m in the max server limit, 100 right now, and many of those are people who treat discord as github, which is so annoying (but many projects are of questionable legality, like Dan’s palace which makes and distributes completed android and vita ports of other games for free).

One time I got excited since there was announcement for the half life 2 android source port discord. I thought it was a big update or maybe a new game, but what I saw was something like:

the memes channel is for memes, not child porn

It’s just discord that has these issues. Matrix or IRC don’t have these problems. Discord just creates a kind of culture that fosters this stuff.

blindbunny,

Nope it’s all over matrix as well.

const_void, in I finally switched back to Linux as my daily driver after a couple of years of being on nothing but Windows.

Why is everyone in here saying “daily driver” all of a sudden?

hugz,

It has always been a very common term to describe the distro/OS of choice. Even moreso when linux was a bit less usable as a desktop OS and dual-booting was pretty necessary

ani,

People using cars as wallpapers on GNU+Linux is trending right now

xfts,
@xfts@lemmy.world avatar

Haha, that’d be funny if this was the meaning.

governorkeagan,

Adding to what has already been said. It can help to differentiate when you use multiple OS’s but end up using one more than the rest.

TrickDacy,
@TrickDacy@lemmy.world avatar

It’s been said for a long time afaik. Didn’t start on lemmy

LeFantome,

Well, if obviously comes from the world of cars. My guess is that its use there dates back to before PCs. It just make sense that people that already used it for cars would apply it to computers. It is hard to know the timing. Probably at the point that at least some people started to have access to more than one.

It’s a term that has existed for quite a while, at least in this kind of community.

interceder270, in Manjaro OS

Manjaro is the best.

The longer you spend in these internet communities, the more you’ll realize there’s a substantial amount of losers who can’t form their own opinions. They’ll just repeat whatever is popular in order to fit in.

CaptDust, (edited ) in Hardware video acceleration

Noting, this PSA is absolutely useful for older components - especially Intel, but anyone using something newer than Skylake (circa 2015) is probably already set up with intel-media-driver or the nv/amd video driver.

nvtop is a useful tool to monitor GPU activity and the decoder in use when a video plays, if you’re unsure

lightnegative, in Fedora 40 Change Proposal: Systemd Security Hardening

Damn security guys are trying to justify their existence again.

My Fedora is single user and the system handily comes with one called ‘root’

IAm_A_Complete_Idiot, (edited )

This is good for precisely the single user case - potentially malicious services on your system can’t view things they otherwise would be able to, or access resources they don’t need. Even if it’s under the same user.

maryjayjay, (edited )

Can’t tell whether you are joking or not

Railison, (edited ) in Darling runs macOS software directly without using a hardware emulator

I do love the https://ss64.com/osx/textutil.html program in MacOS, very powerful and easy to use. Maybe this will run it.

LainOfTheWired, in An open-source, cross-platform terminal for seamless workflows
@LainOfTheWired@lemy.lol avatar

I just finished my perfect st build after switching from kitty. So I’m not really interested in getting something even more bloated then what I used to use.

At least they aren’t going for the new user friendly marketing they were a few weeks back, as they have nothing that would of helped me as a new user a few years ago

LainOfTheWired, in Just about every Windows and Linux device vulnerable to new LogoFAIL firmware attack

I wonder if this effects coreboot builds like heads as they allow you to use external devices like a nitrokey for verification when you boot
