soulfirethewolf, in Firefox Development Is Moving From Mercurial To Git

Dang, I was really hoping that they would stop using bugzilla and switch to something like GitHub/GitLab/Gitea issues instead. Perhaps also put things like feature requests there as well and have one place to contribute to Firefox

Good commercial support

stella, (edited )

Maybe it’s just me, but if you’re doing something technical enough to require commercial support, shouldn’t you have a competent IT team that doesn’t need it?

Just seems weird to pay additional money for technical support of your OS when teams using Debian don’t have to. Are they just more competent on average than teams using Red Hat?

version_unsorted,

This is totally right, but people with money like to point fingers and blame others. Ultimately paying for support is PR insurance.

conrad82, (edited ) in Who uses pure GNOME (no extensions)

I use Debian + Gnome without custom extensions and like it.

I don’t use too many programs, so in the overview I have Firefox in position 1, signal in position 2 and steam in 3. Then I use Win+1,2,3 to launch them.

For other programs, I hit Win and then start typing the name and hit enter.

For switching between windows, i use alt-tab or alt-(key above tab). If I have many windows or playing game in full screen, I hit Win-key once and choose the window i want.

I don’t use workspaces, never found a good flow. And I rarely miss a taskbar.

bushvin, in Filesystem mirroring: best backup tool?

The question is not which tool should I use?

The question is what is it that you want to achieve? That will drive your choice of tools.

I want to mirror my drive can be achieved by a lot of tools. But I want to be able to restore a file I accidentally deleted up to 24 hours with a 1 hour interval is a totally different game.

For backups I am very fond of restic as it does a lot of things in a simple way: encryption, (incremental) snapshots, mounting of said snapshots, support various storage backends, policy based purging, tagging, …

Your tool may not be able to do all you need, like automated scheduled backups, so you will need to also learn cron (or whatever scheduler you may have)

And finally, what about maintenance? What should happen to all those files you’ve synced? How long do you want to keep them?

radioactiveradio,

Someone let a redditor loose in the fediverse.

sag,

As an Indian, I never ask someone to help me set up my Linux, understand its usage, or troubleshoot any issues. Instead, I read the entire wiki or search the web to find a solution on my own. If I still can’t find any help, I move on and forget about that.

Splendid, keep it up!

And if you do ask someone, your grammar is on point.

KISSmyOS,

If I have an issue with Linux, I look for a tutorial on Youtube. Most of the time the best result is a video of an Indian kid half my age who explains exactly what I need in a concise easy to understand manner, while typing every word they say into notepad.

Strit, in I made it to Linux! What is your must-have FOSS or Free Software for linux?
@Strit@lemmy.linuxuserspace.show avatar

I’m surprises no one has mentioned the ones I use most days.

  • git (version control software development)
  • openssh (for ssh connections to other devices)
  • handbrake (video transcoding)
  • Element (matrix client)
metaStatic,

I literally had to run the windows version of handbrake in virtual box because for some reason the linux version can't save to the same directory as the input files while batch processing.

basically the same otherwise, fine for single files.

Strit,
@Strit@lemmy.linuxuserspace.show avatar

I’ve had no issues saving to same folder as source when doing batch transcoding queues on Arch Linux. As long as the input and output files does not have the same filename it’s fine.

metaStatic,

there was no way to set default path so everything got saved to the top level directory. maybe they've added it since but this wasn't that long ago.

Strit,
@Strit@lemmy.linuxuserspace.show avatar

I just realized you might be talking about the CLI version? I’m talking about the GUI version.

@Infiltrated_ad8271@kbin.social avatar

How hard do you have to search to find these x11 fanboys? Because whenever this topic comes up, the only detractors I see are users who complain because they can't use wayland for various reasons.

On the other hand those on the other extreme are easier to find, as they always celebrate x11 users (willingly or not) getting screwed; so toxic.

pathief,

I don’t think anyone is an X11 fan boy. We all know Wayland is the future. I would be using it if it worked on my machine.

    X11 development is dead so it really is just a matter of time before Wayland is the norm and you’ll be saying stuff like “back in my days we used X11 and we liked it!”

    TheGrandNagus, (edited )

    Wayland is already the present for most Linux users.

    Shit, it’s been enabled by default on Debian since 2019. Debian. The famously slow-moving distro.

    You could also list a bunch of insane stuff about X11. The security being hilariously bad, random tearing all the time, terrible multi-monitor support, terrible gesture support, etc.

    X11 lacks basic functionality.

    Of course it matters. Maybe you didn’t know, but Wayland doesn’t exist in a vacuum, X11 is the other choice. How could you possibly think it doesn’t matter lmao

  • TheGrandNagus,

    You should care about issues in X11 because you’ll be facing them if you don’t use Wayland. This isn’t a difficult concept.

    You’re the one that’s slow.

    This isn’t an announcement they’re moving to Wayland, Wayland has been the default for years.
