good battery life (I don’t want to worry about)

Define good battery life.

moitoi,
@moitoi@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I’m fine with several hours of use. 6 hours would be great. The second point is to no worry about having no battery when I take out of my backpack. The second point is also depending on the OS. With all I read and people, I would look for 94Wh at least.

bizdelnick, in Best distro for data science? [request]

Any distro you are comfortable with.

Nibodhika,

Which is the correct answer to 99% of questions that start with “Which distro…”

TerraRoot, in Microsoft says a Copilot key is coming to keyboards on Windows PCs starting this month

Just realized my keyboard is 22 years old.

15liam20,

Sounds like you can legally fuck it.

The_Helmet_Stays_On,

Who says he hasn’t?

TerraRoot,

So you guys don’t think I should buy a new one, just attach a usb vagina to my old one?

drwankingstein, in Looking for a good tablet PC distro

each one of them has issues, I cant in good conscious recommend any atm

DetachablePianist,

That’s a shame. I have a few promising leads to look into; I’ll update this post with my findings and chosen winner once I pick one

unmagical, in Looking for a good tablet PC distro

I have a tablet running fedora with gnome. While it works for me I cannot recommend it at all for something I’d give to someone else.

On the surface gnome looks useable as a mobile DE, but the reality is that it requires several gnome extensions to get it in a useable state (I’m talking having a reliable way to copy and paste). Those extensions are not necessarily updated at the same cadence as gnome or fedora so my ability to consistently use the device in a predictable manner is gone if I install the latest updates when available (and after years of training users to install updates when available someone you give the tablet too will click the update pop-up).

Regarding drivers, the only thing that doesn’t work on mine is the camera. I’d recommend trying out a few choices on a live boot and seeing just how much effort you have to make it useable.

DetachablePianist,

Yeah, I’ll definitely burn a few ISOs to usb to live test. I’ll be sure to update my post with the chosen winner once I pick one.

nbailey, in For those who don't know, here are some cool linux communities on lemmy
@nbailey@lemmy.ca avatar

I’ll never participate in one of the “master race” communities because of the chronically icky association with fash shit. I get it, it’s an old reddit-ey joke from like 2011, but it’s undeniable that the name has a very strong undertone of white supremacy.

Moving away from the incumbent social networks is our chance to create a new culture without that baggage.

possiblylinux127,

Suite yourself I guess. What ever floats your boat

ourob,

Plus, jokingly using fash shit tends to attract people who aren’t really joking but want plausible deniability.

20gramsWrench,

In your head.

Calling insignificant and nerdy things like os choice a trait of the master race is openly mocking the concept of a master race by making it ridiculous

Rebranded Cortana?

Destined to fail.

Michal,

Is it just Cortana? I was under impression they’re integrating ChatGPT-like llm into windows.

Awoo, (edited )

Chatgpt is just Cortana with better marketing. AI isn’t smart, it’s just algorithms producing a facsimile of language via pattern heatmaps. What was Cortana if not just an earlier version of the same thing?

““AI”” is all a techbro marketing bubble. Will burst and move on eventually.

Like holy shit we had the autofill feature in Photoshop ages and ages ago and that’s just doing what the “intelligent” image generators do. We didn’t call it AI back then. All marketing for what amounts to just some interesting algorithms.

space_comrade,

Chatgpt is just Cortana with better marketing. AI isn’t smart, it’s just algorithms producing a facsimile of language via pattern heatmaps. What was Cortana if not just an earlier version of the same thing?

Well no, not really IMO. Cortana as far as I know wasn’t based on LLMs as we know them today, it was a way older method of NLP. You’re right that on a high level it’s pretty similar but the underlying technology is qualitatively different IMO.

JuryNullification,

The next AI winter can’t come soon enough

lemmyvore, in Is there a "universal" web UI for custom Linux NASes?

There’s things like Unraid and Synology that have their own UI. But they have some limitations, for example Synology requires one of their devices, doesn’t run on generic ones.

0x4E4F,

There’s XPnology, but as I said, I like using my own solutuons (choose the distro and build on that).

You’re good. That’s the latest image, it’s just the confusing Debian version scheme where the package version is not the same as the kernel version. Debian package version 6.1.0-17 = kernel version 6.1.69-1

See:

Subverb, in Microsoft says a Copilot key is coming to keyboards on Windows PCs starting this month

I’m happy as a clam with my 1984 loud as fuck IBM Model M keyboard in Windows.

Think you need a Windows key? CTRL-ESC. I use CTRL-ESC even on modern keyboards.

possiblylinux127,

That’s a pretty cool keyboard

Subverb,

I bought mine here but there are other places that restore them.

lemonuri,

Best keyboard ever, will also last forever.

I use capslock as superkey.

Subverb,

I actually use caps lock fairly regularly as a embedded systems programmer. With my large hands CTRL-ESC is pretty easy for me.

patchexempt, in New laptop

it’s easy to recommend a ThinkPad for Linux, and something in the T or P series laptops might suit you. video editing is a potential difficulty though, as that feels a little more workstation-grade than the rest, and you’ll probably want to go big on RAM (32GB would be best) and be sure to get at least an intel i7. I’ve not had great luck with battery life on AMD (shame because everything else is great) but perhaps others have tips for doing better.

you could also go for the ThinkPad yoga models (make sure they’re still ThinkPad though! they also sell a different model line just called “yoga”) if you wanted a tablet/convertible for graphics work.

anyway look at the T14, P14s, or P16 if you want something bigger. whatever the latest generation of those models is.

const_void,

Lenovo build quality has been shit lately. My IT dept is constantly returning Thinkpads for various issues.

monsterpiece42,

I work in a computer repair shop and we rarely see any Thinkpads of any age.

Far from shit. And they have among the best warranty options in the biz

cmlael67,
@cmlael67@lemmy.world avatar

The state agency bureau I provide IT support for has had 10% (8 out of 80) of their new ThinkPads returned for warranty work, with several more showing signs of developing the same problem. The USB-C charging/data port broke on all of them.

Resol, in What distros have you tried and thought, "Nope, this one's not for me"?
@Resol@lemmy.world avatar

As someone who hates Windows with a passion, once everyone recommend Linux Mint, I knew I had to try it.

I immediately had negative first impressions. I simply don’t wanna use something with a desktop environment that reminds me of something that I hate. I get that it makes transitioning a lot easier for many, but for me it simply looks too similar to Windows.

pixelscript,

I’m sure you know it by now, but Mint is the “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Windows!” distro very much on purpose, haha.

Liz,

As a person who doesn’t want to fiddle with my OS or the terminal, yeah, I love me some Mint.

Resol,
@Resol@lemmy.world avatar

It’s good for those that want it, but some would rather just having a completely new user experience.

pete_the_cat, (edited )

Swapping out KDE/Plasma for Gnome or anything else is dead simple most of the time. The DE isn’t locked to the distro, you can have multiple DEs and windowing systems (X and Wayland) installed at once. You can select them from your login manager.

Resol,
@Resol@lemmy.world avatar

I wish I knew about this sooner.

pete_the_cat,

Heh, no problem, never too late to learn. If you’re coming from Windows or OS X it’s easy to think that the WM/DE is tied to the OS but due to the way Linux is written, the entire GUI stack is separate from the base system. I use SDDM as my login manager and in the upper left-hand corner there is a drop-down to choose the DE and Windowing System.

Resol,
@Resol@lemmy.world avatar

Didn’t you already reply with a comment similar to this?

pete_the_cat,

Possibly, I reply to a lot of people and I’m on Mobile most of the time and lose track of what I type.

Resol,

Looking at my comment history, I noticed that this ended up happening to some of my comments too.

pete_the_cat,

If you’re coming from Windows or OS X it’s easy to think that the WM/DE is tied to the OS but due to the way Linux is written, the entire GUI stack is separate from the base system. You can have both the old school X Windowing system and the new Wayland installed at the same time, along with many different Desktop Environments and Window Managers. Resol,
@Resol@lemmy.world avatar

That really is a lot to learn and get used to.

pete_the_cat,

No one ever said learning something completely new was gonna be quick and easy. Take it piece by piece and follow tutorials. Installing Arch Linux will give you a good idea how everything fits together instead of just “click, click, click, reboot” and it’s installed. You don’t learn anything that way.

Resol,
@Resol@lemmy.world avatar

I remember seeing memes about this all the time.

pete_the_cat,

I credit Arch with actually teaching me how to use Linux, even though I had already been using it for about 2 years at that point.

gamma, (edited ) in What's your favorite music player on Linux?
@gamma@programming.dev avatar

I used to use Strawberry, but my collection has grown enough that I can’t just sync it everywhere, so I use Jellyfin now. I still use Strawberry’s library management to move files into album artist/album/00 - track.ext though. Someday I’ll dig into id3v2 to just write a script instead.

bonnetbee,

If you want to continue to use Strawberry, you could stream your music with a subsonic server, Strawberry supports that.

For me it was the other way round: I was using Nextcloud music and searched for a music player on Linux that could stream my .flac-collection via subsonic. That is how I found Strawberry.

Everyone talking it’s bad but I think it’s not, I mean you got another key for shortcut to anything you want after uninstall that crap it’s useless anyway

Anti_Face_Weapon,

Yeah. It’s stupid and crummy, but it’s a new key to bind. But then again, have you ever really used the context menu key? I have not.

ColdWater,
@ColdWater@lemmy.ca avatar

True, I rarely use it when my mouse decided to crap itself

Elderos,

Context menu key is kinda essential for navigating without a mouse. I don’t use it all that often but I am very glad it is there.
