Six Six Six, The kernel of the beast.
Hell and fire was spawned to be released

Boards blazed and reviewed codes were praised
As they start to try, hands held to the sky
In the night, the coffee is burning hot
The commit has begun, Linus work is done

This can’t go on, I must inform the Hurd,
Can this monolith be real, or just some crazy dream?
But I feel drawn towards the GPL-2,
Seem to mesmerize, can’t avoid Tivoization!

S410, in recommendations for lightweight window managers for an old netbook
@S410@kbin.social avatar

Almost everything that's not Gnome can be considered lightweight, to be honest.

Cwilliams,

Maybe except KDE

clmbmb,

No. S/He’s right. Anything (including KDE) is better than gnome.

iloverocks, in recommendations for lightweight window managers for an old netbook

Maybe dwm or dwl. I’m a hyprland user but this would be the minimum you should go for

TimeSquirrel, in Kernel 6.6.6 is out 😈
@TimeSquirrel@kbin.social avatar

Missed opportunity to bake Doom into the kernel as an Easter Egg.

PhobosAnomaly,

“to compile the kernel you must kill me, Linus Romero”

oatscoop,

… I thought Lunix was invented by the infamous Soviet computer hacker Linyos Torovoltos.

@dan@upvote.au avatar

It’s an old meme but it checks out. Older than some of the people in this community haha

For anyone that hasn’t seen it, it’s a reference to this satirical article from 2001: web.archive.org/web/…/2001.12.2.42056.2147.html

PhobosAnomaly,

Man I’ve seen derivatives of this stuff, but this must be the OG post - thanks for that!

I thought the whole Lunix thing came from the elite hacker JEFF.K!!!11 so I’m chuffed there’s another level to this!

dan, (edited )
@dan@upvote.au avatar

It’s funny because the first time I read it, I thought it was serious and was just written by a tech-illiterate parent. Saying that Comet Cursor and Bonzi Buddy are hacker software kinda gives away that it’s just satire though.

oh I guess that’s also something that younger people may not know about… In the late 1990s / early 2000s, it wasn’t uncommon for people to install spyware to get things like custom mouse cursors, emoticons, and purple gorillas that help you navigate the web.

oatscoop,

Another mirror has the original comments. They’re exactly what you’d expect from 2001.

d3Xt3r,

If you see the word “LILO” during your windows startup (just after you turn the machine on), your son has installed lunix.

Wow, that’s a blast from the past! Completely forgot that LILO used to be a thing.

dan, (edited )
@dan@upvote.au avatar

I remember dealing with migrating from LILO to GRUB when I was in high school, maybe 2005ish? It’s been a while. I remember the migration from ipchains to iptables, too (which is happening again now with the iptables to nftables migration)

I used Ubuntu at the time… It was a great distro back then. I only had dial-up so couldn’t download large files easily, and Canonical or one of their local partners would mail you a CD for free regardless of where you lived in the world. I think that helped a LOT of people get into Linux.

d3Xt3r,

Similar experiences here. I remember waiting for the free CDs bundles with monthly magzines, and add then I’d the CD as a mirror in my repos to update my packages lol

Grimpen,

Ubuntu was the distribution that had me switch from dual-booting with Windows as default to dual-booting with Linux as default.

I also remember ordering an actual Ubuntu disc, with the extra donation to fund the mailing for free program.

Now years later after lots of distro-hopping I just run Ubuntu LTS, and stay on the very boring LTS branch.

    Thanks for the suggestions, but you don’t sound too optimistic about them they they’re beyond my skill set anyway (except possibly jailbreaking).

    Aatube, in Is it possible to flash a new OS onto an old iPad 2?
    @Aatube@kbin.social avatar

    https://appledb.dev/device/iPad-2.html Select 9.3.5 and choose the jailbreak method you want. After that, download a newer browser with the jailbreak or even just run Linux on it.

    Hmm… maybe they could compile Feenix. Build tools should probably be still available.

    Atemu, (edited ) in (solved) I can't get my linux system to run properly
    @Atemu@lemmy.ml avatar

    If this is a VM, video playback stutters do not surprise me one bit. There’s many layers between the video and the image you see on screen here and they’re not optimised for viewing fidelity. This is likely not due to Linux but because you’re running this inside a with an emulated GPU. GUIs in VMs usually suck.

    Optional codecs won’t help for Youtube since they serve royalty-free codecs such as VP9 or AV1 most of the time rather than patent-encoumbered codecs such as H.264 and free codecs are always installed.
    That would also not fix stutters, only videos not playing back at all (because there’d be no decoder that could).

    If this is a VM, installing the Nvidia driver also won’t do anything because the machine has no access to your host’s GPU. Not that the nvidia driver would change anything about videos since no sane browser supports their proprietary crap driver, so it’s software decoding either way.

    You should try this on real hardware. You technically don’t even need to install as most GUI distros have a graphical installer with Firefox etc. pre-installed that you can use to test this.

    If you have an Nvidia GPU, I’d recommend you to try !pop_os.

    PlatinumSf, in Is it possible to flash a new OS onto an old iPad 2?

    You may try a downloaded browser, they likely ship with a newer version of webkit than what’s on the system or in the store but I’m not 💯 and Google didn’t reveal any clarity on the matter.

    @mike_wooskey@lemmy.d.thewooskeys.com avatar

    I tried all the downloadable browsers. None work in this iOS. :(

    RelativeArea0, in recommendations for lightweight window managers for an old netbook
    Bipta, (edited )

    Xfce is the best bang for your buck. Lxde isn't much lighter and I never enjoyed using it. I think Lxqt is somewhere between them.

    jsh,

    I second xfce. Stable, lightweight, easy to use, and modern (enough).

    florge, in recommendations for lightweight window managers for an old netbook

    Could try openbox, its old but works. Highly customisable but still lightweight.

    Cwilliams,

    Since Wayland is lighter than X.org, LabWC could be another option. It is not fully compatable with Openbox, but most Openbox configs work on LabWC

    scytale,

    +1 for openbox. It’s fast and lightweight.

    AlolanYoda,

    I liked messing around with openbox but I’m very aesthetically challenged so I never managed to make it look good. Any tips?

    florge,

    Find someone else’s config that you like online.

    halm,
    @halm@leminal.space avatar

    A bit late to the party, but especially for an older machine I’ll take Openbox any day. I still have some low range 2015 laptops running just fine where something like KDE would choke them up completely.

    tsonfeir, (edited ) in Is it possible to flash a new OS onto an old iPad 2?
    @tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

    Nope. You’re hosed. Can’t even put Linux on it. Great piece of hardware still, total trash.

    Aatube,
    @Aatube@kbin.social avatar

    You forgot jailbreaking

    tsonfeir,
    @tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

    Nope. Won’t work. It did back in the day, but nothing will run on it anymore because the OS version required won’t install. I have an iPad 2, I’ve tried.

    No doubt, the hardware could run Ubuntu Touch, alas Apple are dicks like that.

    Wait, crap! I’m already on 6.7.0-rc4 v.v Not gonna accept a lower number just to hail Satan a little extra 🤷‍♀️

    Besides, 6.7 might have something neat in it. I’m not weird, you’re weird!

    I use Arch and/or Gentoo bytheway <.<
