Can you give us specific examples of the programs you use, and what you use them for?

I mean, it took me awhile to learn the names of all the software I currently use. And in some fields, it’s still “Yeah there’s not a good substitute.”

Infiltrated_ad8271, (edited ) in One single partition for Linux versus using a partition table?
@Infiltrated_ad8271@kbin.social avatar

I don't like wasting space or having to predict how much space I'll be using two years from now, so I prefer the minimum of partitions: efi, boot, and system(luks), with a btrfs subvol for /, home, and swapfile.

TCB13, in SBC's with better mainline Linux support than Raspberry Pi?
@TCB13@lemmy.world avatar

You most likely do not want to run a mainline kernel / system. Run Armbian instead, it is Debian optimized for SBCs, it has a very good track record and sometimes is the only option after manufacturers stop creating images for their old boards.

Generic images / mainline kernel might underperform in your board, the GPIO and other low level components will, most likely, not work and you might burn your storage as logging and other I/O intensive operations aren’t tweaked for SD/eMMC. Armbian aims to fix all those issues and provides continuous system and kernel updates long after the manufacturer stops doing so.

Pantherina,

I sold my Odroid C2 or something, as there was no support anymore… didnt know much of Linux, I guess armbian woul have been fine?

TCB13,
@TCB13@lemmy.world avatar

Yes www.armbian.com/odroid-c2/ a friend has a couple of those all running Armbian just fine. With all SBCs the trick is to get something that is supported by Armbian.

rah,

run a mainline kernel

Having a board which is supported by mainline doesn’t imply running a mainline kernel. Having mainline support is a huge advantage regardless of which kernel is run on a board.

AProfessional, (edited )

Anything less than mainline support is ewaste imo. Look how terrible the pi graphics support used to be but now thanks to excellent upstream kernel/Mesa drivers it’s great and will continue to work/improve for the foreseeable future.

When I needed Windows for a piece of software, I ran Windows on another computer. Later I got into a position where I didn’t need to use that software. 😁

“Why does btrfs get a huge perf hit with background IO work?”

ProtonBadger, (edited )

I've noticed a lot number of questions on reddit/etc. suddenly gets asked in that way ("why" in front of a statement). As an ESL I was confused for a while because I've been drilled in asking questions using auxiliary verbs.

mindbleach, (edited )

I blame explanatory headlines. If you searched “why does [blank] happen?” you’d get articles like “why [blank] happens.” ESL speakers (and under-educated native speakers) bungle the difference. (They’re already trying to solve some technical crap. Their [blank] stopped working.) As this spreads, reddit and Stack Overflow start displacing tech-support blogs, and suddenly the headlines themselves are wrong.

guywithoutaname, in Amazon Building its Own Linux-Based OS to Replace Android

Probably because it is stupid simple to escape their ecosystem just by sideloading apps. They want to lock you down with their own OS.

NaoPb, in Amazon Building its Own Linux-Based OS to Replace Android

Nice try Amazon. I’m not falling for it.

FriendBesto, in Linux holds more than 8% market share in India, and it's on the upward trend

That is impressive since the world share for Linux is something below 4%. So the uptake is over double of that of the rest of the world.

Makes sense, when I check new distro/apps videos on YT, something like 70% of them are made by Indian people.

heygooberman, (edited ) in Who uses pure GNOME (no extensions)
@heygooberman@lemmy.today avatar

Have you considered Pop OS from System76? Pop OS has a GNOME-like DE where the dock is fully displayed. It’s very much like the macOS DE. The current stable release uses a GNOME-like DE, and the developers at System76 are working to make it into their own DE called Cosmic.

mfat,

Thanks, yeah I’ve heard good things about Cosmic. I’ll give it a try when it’s available on Fedora.

jacob, in I made it to Linux! What is your must-have FOSS or Free Software for linux?
@jacob@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Another nice-to-have is KDE Connect, it connects your desktop with your phone to sync notifications, send files, control media playback, use as remote input, share clipboard, send commands, and more

possiblylinux127,

I’m not sure it will work with cinnamon.

jacob,
@jacob@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

It should work normally, there’s even cinnamon applets for controlling it from the panel

electric_nan,

I use it in Cinnamon.

possiblylinux127,

Good to know
