turbowafflz, in [QUESTION] I installed Apache OpenOffice

Why do you need OpenOffice? It isn’t maintained

Nibodhika, in What's (are) the funniest/stupidest way(s) you've broken your linux setup?

I’ve done my plenty of stupid stuff, from dd disks I was using to forcefully uninstall dependencies of the package manager. But the one that takes the cake for me happened back in 2012, I was working at a research lab in the university and was sharing a computer with another intern. That other intern used Gentoo and so we agreed that the machine should be Gentoo, I’ve installed it at my house on my PC and got comfortable with it before we shared that computer. One thing that I learnt when installing Gentoo is that the /dev folder is created on boot, you don’t populate it when installing, instead you mount the one from the host system you’re using to install.

The computer had an issue with a device, can’t even remember what it was, so I thought I’ll run rm -rf /dev that should take care of the issue and after a reboot it will be repopulated… It might have worked, but what I actually ran was rm -rf /etc.

Drivers is a vocabulary you should almost forgot in Linux ;) Contrary to other OS, Linux will rarely require you to install a driver.

To answer your question, doing a simple online “mint wireless 8275” returned a forum with your exact issue. The reported solution is to “try powering it off, remove the power cord and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Reconnect cord and power up”. As weird as it sounds this may work. It worked for me 10 years ago with a keyboard. It’s easy and quick to try it. Let us know if that helps or not. Too bad you didn’t like Arch because your laptop was fully supported.

MentalEdge, (edited )
@MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz avatar

OP is talking about a laptop.

Unless you are suggesting they find a way to remove the battery, “removing the power cord and turning it on without actually turning it on” isn’t something they can try.

And the fact that WiFi works on another distro suggests this isn’t a weird bug-state that the card needs to be snapped out of with power-cycling tricks.

wwwgem,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

OP has solved his issue already but the trick I mentioned could be due to a capacitor issue which can occur anytime and break things that worked before.
I was just trying to help by suggesting an approach that solved the exact same issue on others’ laptop running the same distro. Even though not convenient you can either wait for your battery to run out or disconnect it to try this trick.

SzethFriendOfNimi,
@SzethFriendOfNimi@lemmy.world avatar

That trick screams “residual power in a capacitor that we need to drain to get a proper restart on some component”

I’ve heard of that working with some motherboards where it seemed they were dead and may explain those boards that don’t work but magically do months later when the capacitors had time to completely discard the small trickle of current they still had.

wwwgem,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

Exactly.

Xirup, in I'm addicted to caring for my Linux distro, polishing things, optimising stuff it's so funny! Got some stories like that?

I used to spend an unhealthy amount of hours customizing my desktop (Plasma) just to distrohop and repeat that cycle one million times. Then I just got used to the vanilla state of Plasma, and now I really don’t care about that at all.

constantokra,

It’s called getting old.

Honestly, I just need a terminal and x, or I guess Wayland now. I’m not too fussed about the rest. Tiling has made me care about it even less.

Octopus1348,
@Octopus1348@lemy.lol avatar

For people that still care and distrohop, there’s a tool called “konsave” which allows you to save, restore and export specific Plasma customizations (settings included). You only have to reinstall themes you had to install as a package/compiled it.

neidu2, (edited ) in I'm addicted to caring for my Linux distro, polishing things, optimising stuff it's so funny! Got some stories like that?

Kind of, but it’s from my FreeBSD days. It was early 2000s, and at that point I’d been using it since version 3.3, and I was toying with 4.4, and I was getting into kernel optimization. I started removing the things I didn’t need.

A lot of it was simple, such as firewire support, etc. Then I came to the section about peripherals. “AT keyboard? Yup, that’s going”

Welp, turns out PS/2 keyboards were built on top of the AT keyboard subsystem. Luckily I could SSH into it and revert the change.

lemmyvore, in 2024 Is the year I will commit to ditching windows

Use VirtualBox to make a Windows VM and you pick the USB devices from the menu to connect them on the fly, or you can configure the VM to pass them in by default.

Hellmo_Luciferrari,

That might be the route I go.

it really is comforting to know you can do 99% of stuff you want with PCs without a license from Microsoft. FOSS has its own headaches but at least you don’t have to wade through a PR swamp to fix stupid bugs

tsl, in I finally nuked windows
@tsl@lemmy.stefanoprenna.com avatar

I remember when I did the switch in 2008 and never looked back. I had a similar experience where across a few years I have been trying different distributions and finally settled on Lubuntu. Years have passed and different machines as well. Now my main driver is a Steam Deck with his Arch based OS and a secondary pure Arch on a sd card for more specific tasks.

Linux made my life more comfortable and relaxed, without even mentioning secure. My family uses Linux now, Windows is long dead.

We are free.

IsoSpandy,

I actually set up Linux on my family machine 1 year ago and they don’t even notice since all they need is a browser and vlc. So they have been daily driving Linux longer than me :)

Grass,

This is the way. Dealing with the significantly fewer problems they have is easier too. Most things I can ssh in without even touching the computer and fix the issue from my laptop.

swearengen,

I remember when I did the switch in 2008 and never looked back.

I wasn’t far behind you. My first laptop around that time came with Vista installed. Didn’t take long for me to switch Ubuntu after that, haven’t been back to Windows since.

MiddledAgedGuy, (edited ) in (Constructively) What is your least favorite distro & why?

TL;DR: Ubuntu. Because I want choices.

Ubuntu. And I’ve felt that way for a long time, so it’s not something recentish like snaps.

I don’t want my distro to decide what DE and software I’m using for me. They used to have a minimal iso which gave you, as the name suggests, a very minimal install. But now their minimal image is meant for containerized stuff and if memory serves comes with some extra cruft for that purpose.

I got annoyed and I left. And every distro I’ve tried since, even if I didn’t stick with it, I liked better.

To add some constructiveness, as that’s just complaining. That can be a good thing, just depends on the user. If they want the crafted experience Ubuntu provides, then it’s a good pick. It’s just not for me.

Zink, in Reddit API blew up and now I run Linux?

I started using Linux more last year due to work, so the exodus from Reddit to FOSS land has been perfectly timed for me. I think I have 4 different distros in VMs right now.

Snoopy, (edited ) in (Constructively) What is your least favorite distro & why?
@Snoopy@jlai.lu avatar

Unpopular opinion :

  • Arch, i installed it long ago so i can’t remember anything except that i spent lot hours for its installation.
  • Reason : spend a lot time reading the wiki without an easy installer…even Ubuntu was better but i wanted a challenge and a better uderstanding on linux.
  • Some AUR package didn’t work.
  • Why Arch ? To get the lastest os and package as i had a recent gaming laptop.

So I changed and prefered manjaro with its ui for linux os, graphic card…but some thing were broken…than i settled Pop-Os for 3 years and distrohopped again for immutable os : Vanilla OS and Fedora Kinoite. :)

Another distro :

  • Ubuntu
  • reason : snap and various decisions.
Falcon,

I enjoyed arch for how straight forward the install was.

Gentoo however, every time I do that from scratch it’s with X, Westland is NetworkManager that give up (my recommendation is oddlamma installer)

Snoopy,
@Snoopy@jlai.lu avatar

Yeah Arch is straight forward but is require an amazing amount of focus and concentration. :)

I should try gentoo as my next challenge, i guess i won’t like it but in fact, i enjoy those challenge and trying new stuff. ^^

As in what does it mean to itemize. In this case to make an unordered list.

Snoopy,
@Snoopy@jlai.lu avatar

Sorry, my english comprehension is rusty. It is an unordered list. I used it to improve readibility on phone and separate topics.

If the topic is mixed in a paragraphe i would have a harder time to quickly retrieve informations. Here you can read Arch and ubuntu and why in a single glance.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble, in Low battery life due to high power consumption on t490 thinkpad. (help needed)

5 hours watching a video is not that unreasonable for a machine of that age, especially since it’s Intel.

www.pcmag.com/reviews/lenovo-thinkpad-t490#:~:tex…

According to this review they got 10 hours with wifi off, playing a 720p video that was stored locally on the machine. Youtube is going to have plenty of background tasks going on, wifi is going to be active downloading things, and you’ve probably got more than just youtube in the background so I would consider 5 hours to be expected without really delving deep into power saving (and probably killing performance).

Blisterexe, (edited )

Alright, I seem to remember someone saying that I could expect 8 hours of battery life, which is why I asked, thank you! Edit: spelling

    Can confirm GNOME tweaks does not do that. A note stable solution right now (only color theming though) is Gradience.
