Check out Armcord. It’s a 3rd party client with many customization choices (mainly due to the fact that it bundles Vencord and Shelter client mods).

This went in a different direction than I expected, in a good way.

peanutbutter_gas, in Laptop companies: which one?

I have a framework laptop and endeavour os with gnome de. I’ve had no problems with it. I mainly use it for dev work and web browsing. I enabled gnome muli-gesture (basically the same gestures on a Mac trackpad). I’ve had no problems with that either.

I’d recommend it.

Thanks for sharing this feedback. One more point for Framework :)

Revan343, (edited ) in Laptop companies: which one?

I’m a fan of refurbished ThinkPads myself, but that is mostly for money reasons. If I had money to blow, I would probably also buy a Framework

Framework also has an outlet, just in case you want to take a look ;)

Simplicity and organization can be very Zen, my friend.

Perhaps instead of judging yourself so harshly, you consider that others may see the positives of simplicity and small-scale as well.

Not everybody needs big and flashy. Utilitarian isn’t a bad thing. Utilitarian simplicity can be its own art form.

You’re right.

HouseWolf, in Flathub Grows Past One Million Active Users

I know there’s abit of a war going on about the technical merits of flatpaks which I don’t know enough about the Unix world to fully understand.

As a newer user flatpaks have been pretty great, I like having the Android like permissions system through flatseal especially for my proprietary apps like Discord.

I dunno if I’d go all in on using only flatpaks but for what it is, consider me a fan.

floofloof, (edited ) in I feel like I'm missing out by not distro-hopping

You’re not missing anything really. For some reason some people like to say that Mint is a good distro for beginners and imply that you should change away from it when you’re more “advanced”. This is really nonsense. Mint is a good distro. I switched to Tumbleweed because I found one or two things I couldn’t do so easily in Mint, but if you’re not having trouble there’s really no reason to switch. And with tools like Flatpak and Distrobox available these days there’s even less reason to distro hop.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble, in I feel like I'm missing out by not distro-hopping

Pros: you might find something you like more.

Cons: You’ve spent a bunch of time installing OSes you might not like, and you have to set everything back up again. Also if you didn’t back up your data you’re probably going to delete it.

Do you value time fucking around with your computer, or are you happy with how it works currently?

Also distro hop in a VM first, you’re probably not going to like most other things, or it might not be worth the time to migrate all your shit over to it if you find something you like more.

TheGrandNagus, (edited ) in My move to wayland: it's finally ready

Gnome has been pretty great on Wayland for a while.

Personally I’ve been using it since 2017, and besides a stint with a 1080 Ti that was constantly causing issues, it’s been pretty good besides screen sharing in some programs. Speaking of…

I just wish Discord would fix their shitty app or people would abandon that shitty app. Unfortunately neither looks likely.

edu4rdshl,
@edu4rdshl@lemmy.world avatar

Right, actually you can use Discord natively on Wayland just passing the flags mentioned in the post. The only issue I have found with the official Discord client is that it doesn’t support streaming audio alongside to streaming your screen, but vesktop does the trick for that.

vikingtons,
@vikingtons@lemmy.world avatar

Hadn’t heard of vesktop. Thank you for the tip.

priapus,

Use vesktop. Works great on Wayland and supports streaming with audio.

kuberoot,

From my experience, it seems like the video quality really sucks the moment you try to stream anything more complex, like a 3D game - no indication on my side, but a friend complained and I got the same result checking the stream on a second device. Frame rate drops to 2fps or worse, with bad quality on each frame.

I remember reading an issue on vesktop about it, but sounds like it might just come down to missing HW acceleration in electron for the relevant APIs? Though if you have any suggestions and/or better results, I’d love to hear about it.

Dirk, in [QUESTION] I installed Apache OpenOffice
@Dirk@lemmy.ml avatar

The reality that OpenOffice is dead since a decade aside and you only want to try it for experiment reasons and not for actually using it: What happens instead? Do you get any error messages? Try running it from a shell and see if you get any useful output.
