FractalsInfinite, in What's (are) the funniest/stupidest way(s) you've broken your linux setup?

Let’s see: Unintentionally making a proxy accessible to anyone online

Accidentally deallocating an ext4 partition and then having to run testdisk on it

Trying to manually create a grub entry and corrupting the bootloader

Installing a arch derivertive and having it silently overwrite grub

Installing puppy Linux and then trying to get it to use apt

Incorrect use of ppa’s on mint resulting in very old packages being installed

And many others besides

papertowels,

The first time I enabled o auth for something self hosted, I gave access to anyone with a Gmail account.

JoMiran, in Issues filling forms in PDFs
@JoMiran@lemmy.ml avatar

I do a lot of PDF work which requires edits, encryption, etc. Unfortunately the only solution I found that worked for me was a paid one. I use Code Industry’s Master PDF Editor.

lapislazuli,

My upvote goes to Master PDF Editor as well. Only PDF reader/editor that can do annotations and notes sufficiently well, in my very personal opinion.

Jtskywalker,

I’m not opposed to paying for software, especially if it’s good. I’ll try that out and see how it is. Thanks!

shortdorkyasian,

I’ve been a user of Master PDF for years now. It’s my go-to for PDF markup in Linux. Their yearly renewal can be kinda wonky, but their customer service has been excellent.

Dremor, in What's (are) the funniest/stupidest way(s) you've broken your linux setup?
@Dremor@lemmy.world avatar

On OpenSUSE, in Yast bootloader tool, there is a checkbox to to do something like locking the bootloader (it has been a while, I don’t remember the exact thingy). Rebooted and oh, surprise, the bootloader was locked… Which mean Grub didn’t load.

I had to reinstall the whole OS 🤣

Adanisi, in what's a normie KDE distro?
@Adanisi@lemmy.zip avatar

Debian

Fint0034, (edited )
@Fint0034@lemmy.ml avatar

stable or unstable?

Adanisi,
@Adanisi@lemmy.zip avatar

I use stable but if you need more up to date software not in backports unstable would be better suited. Neither are really “unstable”.

Jean_le_Flambeur, (edited ) in What's (are) the funniest/stupidest way(s) you've broken your linux setup?

Types

rm -r -f Presses strg+v (instead of strg + shift + v)

Hits enter

Maschine proceeds to delete the home folder as the garbage that comes when pressing normal strg+v gets interpreted so…

Lojcs, in What software is best to have in a flatpak on tumbleweed?

The one that causes dependency version conflicts when installed normally

algernon, in I'm addicted to caring for my Linux distro, polishing things, optimising stuff it's so funny! Got some stories like that?
@algernon@lemmy.ml avatar

A story like that, eh? Well, as it turns out, the entire configuration of my operating system is a story. Or rather, many stories.

pineapplelover, in 2024 Is the year I will commit to ditching windows

Year of the Linux desktop LFG!

Hellmo_Luciferrari,

Been using Arch with KDE on my Lenovo Yoga, both Wayland and X11 depending 9n what I want to accomplish. Though it lead me down the rabbit hole of Weston so that I could run Waydroid from within X11. Ultimately I just decided Wayland basically when I am not using my touchpad or when I want to run Waydroid.

Year of the Linux desktop, LFG!

pineapplelover,

For some reason, when I switch to X11 (also on Arch with KDE), it bugs out, so I’ve been using Wayland with xwayland bridge installed.

Hellmo_Luciferrari,

What was it doing for you when you switched back to x11?

using bottles and proton ge

I don’t think it’ll make much of a difference, but according to the git repo, you should be using wine-ge instead. Also Lutris is another option that does the same thing, but has easy install scripts for GOG, Epic Games, Ubisoft Connect, and EA App.

Telodzrum,

My process flow has been Steam, if not Steam then Heroic, if not Steam or Heroic then Lutris. I have yet to find a game unplayable.

Anticorp,

The only thing I haven’t figured out how to do is get Fusion 360 running stable.

AlmightySnoo, (edited ) in I finally nuked windows
@AlmightySnoo@lemmy.world avatar

For anyone wondering what Proton GE is, it’s Proton on steroids: github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom

For instance, even if you have an old Intel integrated GPU, chances are you can still benefit from AMD’s FSR just by pushing a few flags to Proton GE, even if the game doesn’t officially support it, and you’ll literally get a free FPS boost (tested it for fun and can confirm on an Intel UHD Graphics 620).

IsoSpandy,

We all just bask in the brilliance of a glorious eggroll.

smackjack, in (Constructively) What is your least favorite distro & why?

I don’t think I’ve ever used Ubuntu for more than a month. I just don’t like the way it looks, how locked down everything is, and how hard it is to customize.

mlg, in "Must Try" distros and DEs?
@mlg@lemmy.world avatar

XFCE with Compiz as the compositor

Or just straight Compiz

Make sure you enable all the funny effects like the cube, cube animations, 3D windows, advanced window animations, transparency effects, sky box, etc.

All easy to do with compiz config manager.

nickwitha_k,

That’s a name that I’ve not heard in a long time. Wasn’t aware that Compiz was still active. It was my favorite compositor until the Gnome 3 switch.

mlg,
@mlg@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah I’m surprised it doesn’t show up as much anymore despite being both a performant and highly customizable platform.

Lots of the effects aren’t available on other DEs, and the team behind has so far actually maintained all the plugins.

Quazatron, in What's your favourite RSS reader for Linux?
@Quazatron@lemmy.world avatar

I mostly use Thunderbird. Lately I’ve been using Newsflash.

gibzag, (edited ) in What's your favourite RSS reader for Linux?

For android I highly recommend ReadYou. Its immaculate!

PS: Use Obtainium to install and update it.

krash, (edited )

Ooo, fever API is now finally supported!

Edit: feverAPI is also deprecated, I guess I’ll just use the web version of my rss-app on mobile instead

BlanK0, in What's your favourite RSS reader for Linux?

I don’t personally use that much RSS in my computer (more on the phone) but I do know of a terminal RSS reader called newsboat.

In terms of android, I use feeder, its available on fdroid and you can also install it via obtainium
