priapus, in What are you most excited when it comes to linux in 2024?

Cosmic DE definitely. HDR too

Adanisi, in Kernel 6.6.6 is out 😈
@Adanisi@lemmy.zip avatar

Does it come with vi (vi vi)?

TheFriendlyArtificer, in What are you most excited when it comes to linux in 2024?

I want Proton to evolve to the point where my CAD/CAM software works flawlessly.

I’m trying to adapt to FreeCAD, but I have so much muscle memory invested in Rhino that it feels like being a beginner again.

Static_Rocket, in Video editor for Linux?
@Static_Rocket@lemmy.world avatar

Am I the only one who kind of likes the video editing profile Blender has?

Winter8593,

TIL Blender has video editing

callyral,
@callyral@pawb.social avatar

blender is almost like the emacs of multimedia software, it’s got 3d modeling and rendering, 3d animation, grease paint (2d animation), non-linear video editing, and probably other features i haven’t heard of.

sentient_loom, in Video editor for Linux?
@sentient_loom@sh.itjust.works avatar

I used shotcut a lot and it’s fantastic.

merthyr1831, in Can one recover from an accidental rm -rf of system directories by copying those files back in from a backup?

I did a similar fucky-wucky before and honestly i just cut my losses and backed up the user data before reinstalling the OS from scratch. Took a few days of tinkering to get my system back to where it was but there’s no telling what kind of system you’ll be left with when you merge a known good image with a broken system.

Laser, in The Wine development release 9.0-rc1 is now available

Really looking forward to this release! Good stuff, another (minor) possible improvement for wine would be native pipewire support. But this is definitely more interesting

gomp, in Have a pixelated bonfire to warm your night. (Image size is ~ 19KiB.)

Wow! This is almost as useful as neofetch ;-)

fraddron, in Dual Boot Best Practices?

Default boot to Linux! I had dual boot set up for years and never actually booted into Linux. Once I changed the default to Linux I never booted into windows again (and eventually deleted that partition)

carlytm, in New systemd update will bring Windows’ infamous Blue Screen of Death to Linux | Ars Technica

At last, the Year of the Linux Desktop.

westyvw, in Vivaldi Is Available on Flathub – Brno Hat

Good news! Firefox is my primary browser, but I use vivaldi as a secondary browser and since it is on all the devices, I sync it for notes.

I use my steam deck as my portable computer instead of a laptop these days, and finally I can add vivaldi to it.

Awesome!

youngGoku, in New systemd update will bring Windows’ infamous Blue Screen of Death to Linux | Ars Technica

This is a joke, right?

youngGoku,

When the system crashes?

So very rarely I guess.

ardent_abysm,
@ardent_abysm@lemm.ee avatar

It is a real, and useful feature, while also being a joke.

Cralder,

It’s real. A bluescreen is literally just an error message displayed in fullscreen so it’s not as weird as it sounds

virr,

More of it will display the LOG_EMERG message instead of just stopping without displaying anything.

There are some headless servers I’d prefer to just reboot, but unless actual hardware is faulty I would not be too worried about it.

lemmyvore, in [Video] Red Hat Is About To End Xorg: Is Wayland Ready?

There’s no Red Hat anymore, it was sold to IBM 5 years ago. All their recent shifts in FOSS strategy are a predictable result of that. IBM only cares to streamline RHEL operations not about what’s usable or appropriate for Linux in general.

Discover5164, in Laptop with long runtime

i have the same requirements as you. i bought framework 13.

i’m still in the confuguration phase, for now it has a decent battery run of ~6/8h of installing stuff. i’m configuring nixos.

not_a_bot_i_swear,
@not_a_bot_i_swear@lemmy.world avatar

I looked into them. And it sounded a lot of the users are not happy about the build quality compared to Thinkpads or Latitudes. How is your experience? Did you go with Intel or AMD?

Discover5164,

i just got a ThinkPad for work, it’s spectacular. but if you need to replace something…

the framework is solid, and allows to replace anything. i think the tradeoff is very fair.

BaldProphet,
@BaldProphet@kbin.social avatar

Build quality on Frameworks is dramatically better than most ThinkPads. They've made a lot of improvements to battery life since the first generation (I got mine in the second batch), so it might have decent battery life now. They've always been more efficient on Linux than on Windows.

the_q,

Build quality? You mean replaceable parts vs glue making things feel more solid? Have I had this conversation with you before?

Jumuta,

you have TLP configured?

Discover5164,

yes but default config, i still need to look into it

datendefekt,
@datendefekt@lemmy.ml avatar

Which CPU are you using? I’ve got the 11th gen i5 and battery life is just miserable, especially in standby.

Discover5164,

i5-1340p

there is a kernel parameter to add to make standby better: mem_sleep_default=deep.

if you are on nixos you can import the framework hardware module from “nixos-hardware”. it also includes other fixes

JokeDeity, in Darling runs macOS software directly without using a hardware emulator

I’m a Windows user so this is even less relevant to me, but I can’t think of a single program or application I would even want that’s only on Mac.

FIST_FILLET, (edited )

raycast, shottr, sketch, logic, final cut, motion, ia writer, things3, xcode

JokeDeity,

The only one of those I’ve ever heard of is Final Cut and I have Premier Pro already. I’m going to assume I can get a pretty solid alternative for any of the rest as well.

EtzBetz,

For me that could be Sketch :)

JokeDeity,

Not familiar, but I have the Adobe suite and that seems to cover my needs.
