What's (are) the funniest/stupidest way(s) you've broken your linux setup?

Tinkering is all fun and games, until it’s 4 am, your vision is blurry, and thinking straight becomes a non-option, or perhaps you just get overly confident, type something and press enter before considering the consequences of the command you’re about to execute… And then all you have is a kernel panic and one thought...

and a need to find another PC to flash an archiso to a flash drive ('cause ofc I didn’t have one at the time).

you can do that from your phone using etchdroid

i don’t remember ever breaking my system in a terrible way, but when i started using linux (with linux mint) i uninstalled ca-certificates and i think that uninstalled the whole DE

"Must Try" distros and DEs?

Hey folks! I’m getting a fresh laptop for the first time in about a decade (Framework 16) in a couple of months and am looking forward to doing some low-level tinkering both on the OS and hardware. I’m planning to convert into a “cyberdeck” with quick-release hinges for the screen since I usually use an HMD, built-in...

i don’t think lemmy markdown supports tables, though it should

edit: lemmy uses commonmark which doesn’t appear to support tables

Related: does anyone here have any thoughts on Tutanota and how it compares to Proton Mail? I’ve considered using it in the future.

i thought this was about game development for a second and was confused as to why you wouldn’t be able to do that on linux

Today marks 20 years since Georgia changed its flag! They got rid of a, IMO quite ugly, brown flag, replacing it with the much prettier red and white flag of the medieval Kingdom of Georgia. (files.catbox.moe)

The current flag dates back to the middle ages, maybe as far as the 12th century. This makes it not only one of the youngest national flags of the world (since 2004), but also one of the oldest! (Even if it has been in disuse for most of its history.)...

None. I just buy a big (>500ml) durable non-plastic water bottle once and use it until it stops being breaks or something. Why don’t more people do this (genuine question, wondering if there are actual reasons)?

callyral,

Perfectly reasonable to buy plastic water bottles in that situation. I hadn’t thought of that.

Approaching infinite mass means you’ll probably form a black hole or end the universe before being able to weigh either of them

Do you not know what a tar.gz is? it’s like a zip file. how are you supposed to install it automatically? the structure inside is unknown.

also, it’s commonly used for things like backups.

How to cope with existing right now?

It feels like no matter where I turn some septuagenarian, or older, is making life miserable for myself and others. Usually these are older white Christian conservatives, obsessed with a delusional sense of reality that no longer has a basis in fact, or perhaps never did....

What's the best way to have a .bashrc that I can use throughout systems?

So, I just found out about a programme called SynthShell which kind of does the work for you and gives you a nice looking shell, the thing is that this also creates some config files and other stuff in my system, instead of just one .bashrc file to edit. What would be the best way to learn to have a nice looking bash where I can...

callyral,
@callyral@pawb.social avatar

if you want a shell that needs less configuration and has more features, i recommend fish shell.

for bash, you could search for someone else’s bashrc, copy that, and modify until it works how you want it to.
