Well it’s there at least. Hmm. I don’t know a whole lot about windows but you can certainly get back to those boot options you saw before by pressing shift while booting, which will open the GRUB options. I’d give the windows boot manager another shot from there.
If that ends up working you can change the grub settings to wait for input instead of automatically booting pop. If that doesn’t work then something is probably wrong with windows and I would just try reinstalling since it sounds like you don’t have anything on there yet.
at this point i am considering uninstalling Pop and getting win10 first because linux actually has sensible ways to dual boot even on the same drive. that’s probably what i’ll have to do.
Apparently I’m wrong and Pop_Os uses systemD-boot not GRUB, which is surprising to me because unless things have changed I’ve always thought of systemD-boot as being underpowered for a lot of use cases.
this is indeed, pretty damn weird. I’m going to go with uninstalling pop os, and getting windows first on the smaller drive, then getting either KDE Neon or Linux Mint on the bigger one. kinda sucks, i wish i couldve just installed but it doesn’t seem like there is anything i can do. thank you so much for the help, comrade. rat-salute
I use rEFInd, which auto-detects my Windows boot partition. Though I had the Windows installation before the Linux one.
Systemd-boot should be able to detect a bootable Windows too. I don’t remember the specifics. It works out of the box on my laptop. Google “systemd Windows boot”.
Alternatively, maybe something went wrong with the Windows install and you nees to do the Windows repair USB stick thingy. Do you have a Windows recovery partition?
Ah I think Windows does this “helpful” thing where it installs its bootloader into the ESP of any drive if it’s already present rather than the drive you explicitly told it to install onto.
You didn’t have anything in it yet, right? Unplug all other drives and then re-install Windows onto the drive. It should work as expected after that.
IIRC Pop!_OS sets the systemd-boot timeout super short; you have to hold a key after the firmware is done or something to get to it reliably or simply increase the timeout (1s is enough, I have it set to that on my systems). systemd-boot should give you the option to boot any windows installation though, it can auto-detect them.
Not vim necessarily, but I would really suggest thinking about a plain text editor of your choice and some of those lightweight markup languages (Markdown itself, reStructuredText, ASCIIDoc … I prefer rST, but they are mostly the same). Exactly because it allows me to concentrate on the content and ignore formatting. Besides, formatting, do you write for print or as everybody else these days for HTML? Why do you need a large word processor which is build primarily for preparing documents for print? Every serious text editor has some kind of plugins with spellcheckers, grammar checkers, dictionaries, etc.
It worked… ok. The lack of a USB dock really hurt the “desktop and laptop in one” concept that I was shooting for. I had to plug / unplug 3 things to get into “desktop mode” which was a hassle for how much I switched between modes. It ran things like Valheim really well but utterly failed at FPS games like Apex (<15fps, horrible stuttering, totally unplayable).
If you already have a laptop, a GPU, a desk, a decent monitor, and you typically play low-requirement games and just want to play on high settings – then by all means it’ll be great for that! Another way it may make sense for you is if you play around with CUDA and need a compatible GPU on a budget.
That being said, don’t convince yourself that you’ll get full use out of something like a 4070. If that’s what you want then, as of now, a desktop is almost certainly your best option.
I love LMDE. Longtime fan of Mint, and recently changed all my ‘GUI’ machines over to LMDE. I tried pure Debian with Cinnamon, but it wasn’t the same. Mint makes it nicer, and I believe Debian is going to be their main base sooner than later, the way Ubuntu is going.
I would conclude from this that your dc-dc converter is out of whack and only works stable enough for a small range of input voltages. This hardware issue might require a hardware fix at a repair shop :/
thanks for the input. so no amount of tweaking and kernel switches and MSRs and what not can be utilized to lower or alter the performance so that it behaves? the repair route isn’t likely unfortunately
Would you notice if it doesn’t? The screen flickering is obvious, what if your ram and ssd flicker, too? You can tinker with that laptop and try to reduce 3.3 or 5v power rail load with kernel flags, but until someone checks those power rails electrically I wouldn’t trust that laptop to be reliable for anything but a tinkering exercise. We sadly don’t get redundant power IC’s you could switch to, but the failure is common and the involved parts cheap. I wish competent repair shops were more common.
sure, it’s a decade old device worth like $100, if that. of course this is a tinkering exercise. but I’m referring to the fact that it works perfectly without battery, it obviously has some power limiting then (no speedstep, no turbo). so I was looking to recreate that behavior with the battery.
You can use their online web-editor (similar to OverLeaf for LaTeX) or download the open-source engine and run it locally (there are extensions available for many text editors).
Compared to LaTeX I find it much more comfortable to work with. It comes with sane, modern defaults and doesn’t need any plugins just to generate a (localized) bibliography or include links.
Since Typst is very young compared to LaTeX I’m sure that there are numerous docs / workflows that can’t be reproduced at the moment but if you don’t need some special feature I’d recommend giving it a shot.
