bizdelnick, (edited ) in Is there any way to emulate aegis authenticator (fdroid) on an ubuntu based computer?

There’s nothing special, it can be replaced with any TOTP/HOTP implementation. In particular, oathtool is supplied in most distros (it has only command line interface, probably there are also some GUI tools in your repos). However it does not support JSON key format that is provided as QR code for mobile 2FA apps. You have to copy and paste values from it manually.

However this will likely violate your employer’s security policy. The point of 2FA is that secret key is stored on a separate device, so that it cannot be stealed together with your password.

I recommend to try other Android apps on your phone. I use FreeOTP+ and have no problems with font readability. Some of my collegues use AndOTP and like it.

joojmachine, in Linux reaches new high 3.82%

I’m really suspicious of those numbers, seeing the sudden drop in macOS and Chrome OS, but I’m hoping so much that those are accurate. Things are slowly but surely getting better.

@RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

No actual answer, but I’d suggest reading your employers computer use policy carefully - for me at least, sharing an OTP secret with an unauthorized application would be a pretty serious policy breach. Probably wouldn’t get fired for it (unless it resulted in an actual breach) but would definitely get a “don’t do that again” letter from HR

69420, in How i can sign .pf2 files for using them with GRUB?

I’ve never had to sign font files, but I imagine you would use the same keys you used to sign your bootloader. sbsign is what I use to sign EFI Stubs.

prettydarknwild, (edited )
@prettydarknwild@lemmy.world avatar

sbsign fails with the error “Invalid DOS header magic”

69420,

Apparently sbsign is only for signing kernel images. You may be able to sign fonts using gpg.

how i can do it?

stepanzak, in Terminal Utility Mega list!

Trashy is another rm command that sends files to trash that I really like. They recently fixed zsh completions bug, but maybe only in the latest git version. It’s also written in rust.

Steamymoomilk,

added and looks rather usr friendly

urfavlaura, in What are your opinions of Guix?

It’s like Nix but has some extra features and uses Scheme instead of a custom language.

CanadaPlus, (edited )

That’s barely an opinion, haha! That’s pretty much just what it is.

juli, in New Linux user here. Is this really how I'm supposed to install apps on Linux?

That’s what I hated as a beginner on debian/ubuntu as well. On fedora it’s straight forward. Adding repo and then isntalling the app.

bizdelnick, (edited )

Lolwhat? It is the same in any distro: adding the repo and installing the app.

iopq,

It’s not like that on NixOS

There’s no adding repos, you just put mullvad-vpn in your system packages list

vzq, (edited )

Yeah, the only odd thing is installing the signing key, but it’s there for a good reason.

That said, it’s not a great user experience, especially if you start stacking a lot of ppa’s.

risencode,

It’s the same on Debian, so I’m not sure what you mean?

TimLovesTech,
@TimLovesTech@badatbeing.social avatar

Yeah, how Ubuntu is supposed to be noob friendly and continues to be recommended blows my mind. Seems like every stupid app you want to install needs you to add a ppa that is almost guaranteed to break on the next major update. And ugh snaps …

dvdnet89,
@dvdnet89@lemmy.today avatar

Believe or not many people who know little Linux world always believe Ubuntu is the de-facto Linux itself.

Spore, in What are your opinions of Guix?

Nobody has mentioned that Guix is readily available on NixOS right now? Add a line to your config and it’s ready to go. Compatible with everything else.

velox_vulnus,

How about the other way around? I want to switch to Guix, but I want to keep using Nixpkgs for the time being?

Spore,

You can use Nix on Guix System and vice versa, but it’s like installing them as a package manager on a foreign system. The store and packages currently are completely isolated between the two, although there’s a very early plan for a common store interface.

I much prefer the links browser over lynx nowadays links.twibright.com

Steamymoomilk,

added to the list! i honestly thought you wrote down lynx again. but i reread it for the 3rd time and realized its not the same program LOL. name schemes,

LainOfTheWired, in What are your opinions of Guix?
@LainOfTheWired@lemy.lol avatar

It looks like a cool distro if you want/need a highly configurable package manager that makes your system easily reproducible.

But if you’re just looking to learn more about Linux and learn more about how your system is set up then your average distro you might just want to go with Arch, Void, or Gentoo.

mr_right, (edited ) in Dual Booting: How in god's name?!
@mr_right@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

There is a niffty Boot manager called Refined. This is what I use even though I installed Windows after Linux and had many kernel panics, but it does the job well since it scans your boot drive every time you Power on your machine. Here is a link. Just download the CD-ROM version, put it in ventoy, boot from it, and the rest is easy. You already are a linux user, you can figure it out.

I also advise you to disable Windows updates if you can, and I mean all updates, because they can mess the boot order. If you use Windows to play games and games only.

Edit: You can also install it from your distro package manager if you can access your system.

No problem, just returning the good of the community. Tell me if it worked out.

terminhell, in Dual Booting: How in god's name?!

General rule of dual booting from the same drive: install windows first, then Linux.

BCsven, in Terminal Utility Mega list!

Htop is highly customizable, most people don’t realize you can alter the setup completely

Steamymoomilk,

I did not know that! That’s pretty cool!

db2, in Make Inkscape installed through Flatpak callable in the terminal as 'inkscape'?

A good argument against containerization of programs tbh.

A good argument against DOS 2.0 adding directories

OsrsNeedsF2P,

Yup, pack it up folks. We spent years working to solve containerized applications with a granular permission system, but we can’t figure out how to make an executable run a command. It was a good run, but it’s over now.

db2,

Finally someone got the point instead of just downvoting. 🤣

I’ve been searching for a browser based terminal gateway that I can use for sysadmin. I’d like to just have all my ssh connections in one spot and accessible as a web terminal in a network, like a bastion host. Anyone have any recommendations?
