There’s a reason why chromebooks are so popular, and it’s not just the price.

nik282000,
@nik282000@lemmy.ca avatar

Because they are the Crayola of fuckin computers?

Moonrise2473,

I really don’t think people is reasoning “yes I definitely need a computer that exclusively can browse the web no matter the price” because otherwise, if price is no objection, they would buy an ipad with a keyboard.

This considering that a Chromebook instantly loses the resale value as soon as you pay it and it comes with a time bomb which is known only to hyper technical people. Chromebooks on discount have just 1-2 years of updates left or in some cases they’re already EOL. It’s crime against the environment that a Linux machine with a browser has a EOL date when it could receive browser updates indefinitely without any issue.

fernandu00, in recommendations for lightweight window managers for an old netbook

I have the exact same netbook and specs and I installed fedora lxde a couple months ago just to see how it would go and…it’s pretty decent performance if you use it just to browse the web or text editing… Installed vscodium and it got laggy as hell though … Had to use geany instead

I’d say so - since you’re coming in relatively cold you’re probably not so used to Windows that you’d get frustrated with how Linux works compared to it, and if you’re just using it for regular, everyday stuff like web browsing there’s practically no difference.

After reading the comments and looking at how much each has been up/downvoted, I have no fucking idea.

korbel, in (solved) I can't get my linux system to run properly

Not sure about the opi method but I installed an opensuse tw recently with same nvidia/ryzen config and everything works just fine.

Enabled nvidia and packman essentials in yast and replaced the system packages. That’s option 3 here.

jmf, in (solved) I can't get my linux system to run properly

what are you using as a hypervisor? if it is virtualbox you will struggle to get smooth video playback, its gpu support is very poor. vmware is much better. yes yes it is proprietary but so is virtualbox with extensions which is the only way to make it kinda usable lol

governorkeagan,

OP is running on bare metal. They used the VM for testing and have now moved on from that

Helix, in (solved) I can't get my linux system to run properly

Do you have VAAPI installed and configured properly for hardware acceleration? Does video playback outside YouTube, e.g. with YouTube-dl and MPV, work?

Holzkohlen, in (solved) I can't get my linux system to run properly

I have had weird issues with Tumbleweed too. Never any issues with Arch based distros. I suggest trying EndeavourOS or Garuda Linux. Love both

BaroqueInMind,

Or just do a pure arch install by just running archinstall in the original ISO from their website and following their wiki.

TheCaconym, (edited ) in (solved) I can't get my linux system to run properly

What’s the browser you’re using ? and also please do:

glxinfo|egrep -i “^direct”

You’re looking for a line that says “direct rendering”; specifically whether or not it says “yes”. This will help pinpoint if you’re actually using your GPU or some onboard chipset instead.

With that being said, even assuming you use the latter, stuttering video playback in the browser is weird; if using firefox, out of curiosity: try to disable or enable hardware rendering (options > advanced > general), and try again. Switch it back to what it was when your test is done.

aniki,

glxinfo|egrep -i “^direct”

Does that come with base SUSE? They might need to install it, but it’s in the default repo for Arch so I assume it’s in the base repo for yast as well.

Discover5164, in [Request] Where to start with dot files?

You shouşd definetly give mint a try it is one of the most just works distros. great for beginners, maybe test the software you want to use on the live environment before installing, if all goes well than give it a spin.

TheMadnessKing, in This week in KDE: DMA fence deadlines and lots of bug-fixing

How is the current state of Plasma 6? Can I drive it on daily basis under Wayland and test it out? I dont have nvidia too.

Virual,

Plasma 6 is currently in beta, so it really isn’t meant to be used for anything other than testing. I have it installed on arch, and honestly it’s good enough for my use with wayland, but you will definitely will run into issues. I also use Nvidia, though, so I’d probably have more issues than you will.

Overall, I only recommend it right now if you can roll back or if it isn’t that big of a deal if your install breaks.

NamelessGO,
TheMadnessKing,

Thanks. After going through, I decided to stick with my current setup.
