I don't know what's worse, that this is real or that it appears to be relatively serious and not just taking Ubuntu and doing an UwU text transform on every localized string.
Oh, I have no issues with pony people. I was more disappointed that UwUntu wasn't as UwU as I really hoped it would be after I discovered it was a real thing.
At some level I just wanted it to commit to the bit, even if it's at the cost of usability. Maybe only on 1 Apr or something.
The last straw was when I had a 24 hours render running, and Windows decided to update and reboot 1 hour before it was done. I was using the computer at the time, RAM, CPU, and GPU were all at max, the mouse was being moved, I clicked “later” every time the update pop-up appeared, and it still rebooted.
Linux does what I tell it to, and doesn’t do what I tell it not to do. I didn’t think that was a big ask until Windows.
Pipewire makes me feel like I’m a bit stupid. I keep reading about it, I read the introduction and FAQ on their website, yet I still couldn’t tell you what that thing even does. All I know is it’s a slightly less buggy drop-in replacement for pulseaudio, and pulseaudio is something I use because Firefox forces me to. (I would still be on plain old ALSA if it weren’t for Firefox.)
Also, it definitely did not “just work” for me out of the box, I had to do quite some digging and some very non-obvious stuff to get it to a) start up and b) let me use my microphone. I still don’t even know what “starting up” really means for pipewire (is there a daemon or something?), the website likes to pretend that isn’t a thing, but without doing some stuff to start it up, audio just won’t work for pulseaudio and pipewire applications…
For a long time, people shat all over pipewire and said it wasn’t viable as a replacement for the existing Linux audio stack, but clearly that hasn’t ended up being the case
When it was brand new there were some edge case bugs that broke on certain workflows and hardware, but that’s pretty much entirely fixed now and I’m guessing for a long time now it’s been more universally stable than pulseaudio was.
Also, some people just pointlessly dislike anything that’s new, or because it breaks their spacebar heating
I’m surprised you put shell so high when it tends to be less impactful in my experience. Like I care a lot more if my distro is using GNOME instead of KDE a lot more than if it’s using bash instead of zsh. Plus it’s easy to install and use a different shell
It is easy to install another shell indeed, but it is quite difficult to configure it. While installation of DE is usually done with just one command. And you can use linux without DE, but not without shell. Many distributions even do not install DE by default at all.
Okay but unless you are spending a lot of time in the command line, one (POSIX compliant) shell is as good as another. Like yes every distro needs a shell, but I don’t much care which shell it is.
it is a dynamically linked library, meaning its not in the compiled binary, but its assumed to already be on the system. as opposed to a statically linked binary. this lowers the file size of the binaries, because most will use the standard library.
edit: this may not be 100% correct, but its the general idea
Most C binaries usually do not contain everything needed for their execution. It would make them too platform-specific. What most c programs do is that they use standard c library from platform for low-level things and communication with the system like memory allocation or stdin/stdout things, for example.
I had the opposite problem, I had my mouse all nicely configured just how I wanted it using Piper on linux, then booted windows to test something unrelated (which if I remember correctly didn’t even have the logitech software installed) and it somehow instantly reset my mouse to factory defaults. I decided whatever I was trying to do wasn’t worth the effort and have not had windows installed on my main computer since
Reminds me of the “Op” wars on IRC. All users would be given @ status and the point was to kick everyone before you got kicked. Writing scripts for this was my first “taste” at programming.
Always did on my hardware at least. When I was using Windows, my old laptop started lagging very much and it was becoming unbearable. I could not get a new one immediately. I got to know about Linux one day and installed it to try it out because there was not really anything else I could try.
I could not believe myself how buttery smooth my laptop became after that. 95% of the games that I used to play on Windows run with more performance on Linux.
I’m typing this on an 8-or-9-year-old laptop that used to be a Windows machine years ago. Exact same experience–it got too sluggish so I wiped it and installed Linux and it’s been fine ever since.
It’s not a “shitty title”, because Ubuntu Linux is the thing they actually tested.
Whether Debian or Fedora or Alpine or Void or whatever would do better or worse is not a given, and isn’t something the OP can comment on because they didn’t test it.
We can probably infer that gains of a similar amount would be seen on most mainstream distros (as they’re all pretty similar under the covers), but that’s not on the OP.
In particular, Ubuntu ships with various non-free drivers and kernel patches that will be present in some, but not all other distros.
If course it’s not on the OP, it’s on Phoronix. This is a shitty title from any party, but from them last least I would have expected more, instead of just attributing the performance to a specific distribution, the most corporate-y one no less.
Linux, the kernel, doesn’t operate in isolation. The system under test was Ubuntu, which comes with specific packages, package versions, patches, kernel configuration, and so on. It is reasonable to say that the combination between this specific operating system and hardware led to the observed outcome. Different combinations of software and hardware may yield other results or replicate the same outcome. The certainty of these outcomes can only be established through testing. Therefore, your outrage seems unwarranted, and your assertion is not only baseless but incorrect.
This major change won’t affect existing EndeavourOS users as they will be able to continue enjoying the Arch Linux-based distro with their favorite desktop environment. On the other hand, the devs removed the Sway, Qtile, BSPWM, Openbox, and Worm community editions from the Calamares installer as there’s no one left to maintain them.
May also be relevant to some users.
The devs explain the switch from Xfce to KDE Plasma as a way to make EndeavourOS development and maintenance easier for them as they have a more native experience with the Calamares installer.
Could someone explain to me why the Calamares installer would have to do with them deciding on KDE over XFCE?
Calamares uses the QML / Qt toolkit. Most of the people involved in Calamares are also involved in the KDE Project.
XFCE use the GTK toolkit.
So, it is totally reasonable to say that KDE is “more native”.
While Wayland maybe a factor, KDE itself will not be fully Wayland compatible until Plasma 6 next year. So that does not really explain the timing of this move.
I use XFCE myself so I am a bit nervous about the change. We will see.

Okay… Not exactly “super powers!” If you’re literally talking about some of the most basic functionality of the app. The end of the article does get into customizing it with plugins, etc so that’s good.
If I remember, there was another display protocol being developed as an answer to Wayland for BSD. I don’t remember what it was called, but that project was basically about an open source MacOS.
I think the predecessors to RavynOS, it was called HelloSystem I think. In that project, they were talking about an alternative display server protocol.
Imo, Chris Titus should just stop making Linux content… His windows content is genuinely useful, yet his Linux content boils down to "arch and debian good, ye old packages good, Wayland not ready, snaps/flatpaks/everything else sucks, Gnome bad, gnome bad (again), fedora bad… He’s the literal definition of a gatekeeper.
