modcolocko, in Looking to switch to Linux in the somewhat distant future

Know that you’ll probably hate what you try first. Personally I say you shouldn’t use Pop_OS!, but its better than being scared of making a wrong choice. “distrohopping” is a great way to learn.

tldr: just do it

thespezfucker,

I would but personal issues are holding me back atm

hellequin67, in Firefox Sidebar Addon like Brave or Vivaldi?

This for me has been a work changer:

josh-berry.github.io/tab-stash/

Can open in tab or sidebar. Honestly, can’t recommend highly enough.

d0ntpan1c,

+1

the UI could be improved (I always end up hovering for tooltips on controls) but it works really well.

I also like that tabs will stay in the stash by default on close, so its great for opening a bunch of reference sites really quickly without worrying about losing them

Closest thing to the old firefox experiment from a few years back.

Frederic, (edited ) in Suspension on my laptop (closing the lid) causes Wifi to not be available.

You need to unload your wifi module before suspend.

Without systemd it’s easy:

create a file /etc/pm/config.d/config containing:

<span style="color:#323232;">HOOK_BLACKLIST="wireless"
</span><span style="color:#323232;">SUSPEND_MODULES=”NAME_OF_YOUR_WIFI_MODULE”
</span><span style="color:#323232;">SUSPEND_MODULES=”wl”
</span>

With systemd try this

create a file /usr/lib/systemd/system-sleep/fix-wifi.sh containing (fuck this editor, replace the “##” with “&&”) :

<span style="color:#323232;">#!/bin/bash
</span><span style="color:#323232;">[ "$1" = "post" ] ## exec /usr/sbin/modprobe NAME_OF_YOUR_WIFI_MODULE
</span><span style="color:#323232;">[ "$1" = "pre" ] ## exec /usr/sbin/modprobe -r NAME_OF_YOUR_WIFI_MODULE
</span><span style="color:#323232;">exit 0
</span>

and make it executable with chmod 755 /usr/lib/systemd/system-sleep/fix-wifi.sh

RossoErcole, (edited )
@RossoErcole@kbin.social avatar

It doesn't work, should it look like this the script?

#!/bin/sh
[ "$1" = "post" ] ## exec /usr/sbin/modprobe Intel Corporation Wireless-AC 9260
[ "$1" = "pre" ] ## exec /usr/sbin/modprobe -r Intel Corporation Wireless-AC 9260
exit 0

EDIT: should the name be something like wlp62s0 ??? I'm going to try it

Frederic, (edited )

you have to replace the ## with &&

the name should be iwlwifi

RossoErcole, (edited )
@RossoErcole@kbin.social avatar

how do I check the name? because iwlwifi doesn't work

Frederic, (edited )

well, are you sure the script is executed? I don’t know systemd enough :-(

First, do a test in command line modprobe -r iwlwifi

then suspend your laptop, resume it after a few seconds then do

modprobe iwlwifi

and see if wifi is working

RossoErcole, (edited )
@RossoErcole@kbin.social avatar

Yeah, thanks for the help even if you don't know much. I get stuck on the first command where I get this error:

rmmod: ERROR: ../libkmod/libkmod-module.c:799 kmod_module_remove_module() could not remove 'iwlmvm': Operation not permitted
rmmod: ERROR: could not remove module iwlmvm: Operation not permitted
rmmod: ERROR: Module iwlwifi is in use by: iwlmvm
modprobe: FATAL: Error running remove command for iwlwifi

Frederic,

yes of course

sudo modprobe -r iwlwifi

RossoErcole,
@RossoErcole@kbin.social avatar

I've tried. After suspension but before modprobe the wifi is not available, after modprobe it is there, but is disabled and cannot be enabled.

WallEx, in Firefox Sidebar Addon like Brave or Vivaldi?

I use the integrated sidebar, that comes with Firefox for viewing my pinned tabs. But it can only do that in this case and I’m assuming the sidebar on brave and Vivaldi can do more?

Pantherina,

What? How do you enable that?

WallEx,

There is a button next to your search and website bar. Next to the addons and stuff. …mozilla.org/…/use-firefox-sidebar-access-bookmar…

Pantherina,

Thanks! Still not what I need. Way too big and again for all bookmarks, not only a few icons

cashews_best_nut,

A fuck ton more Hans Gruber. Check out Vivaldi. 👍

WallEx,

Could you kindly tell me, so I don’t have to install the software?

And why Hans Gruber? :D

xkoe, (edited ) in Suspension on my laptop (closing the lid) causes Wifi to not be available.

Is your laptop, by any chance, an HP? I had the same issue with wifi and finally, after about a year of frustration, found the solution HERE. To save a click, here’s the part that worked for me, with the disclaimer that I don’t honestly know how this works, but by the time I found it I was frustrated enough to run random code from the internet with sudo privileges on my main machine:

First, create the file

/etc/systemd/system/hp-keycodes.service

and type/copy-paste the following into it:

[Unit]
Description=HP setkeycodes fix

[Service]
Type=oneshot
Restart=no
RemainAfterExit=no
ExecStart=/usr/bin/setkeycodes e057 240 e058 240

[Install]
WantedBy=rescue.target
WantedBy=multi-user.target
WantedBy=graphical.target

Then, run the following commands:

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now hp-keycodes.service

That fixed it for me, hopefully it helps you (or someone else) as well!

RossoErcole,
@RossoErcole@kbin.social avatar

no I have an MSI, but I hope in some ways this script helps people that might know more about it.

WeAreAllOne, in Firefox Sidebar Addon like Brave or Vivaldi?

You might be wanna check out Floorp web browser. A fork of Firefox which implements sidebars and other interesting elements. Plus it’s super fast!

Pantherina, (edited )

Ok will see if I can copy those elements to normal Firefox. No way I am using some strange 3rd Party firefox mod XD

sandayle,
@sandayle@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Floorp is not bad but I think it delays in receiving updates. I get “no ad blockers allowed” warnings on YouTube.

WeAreAllOne,

It’s based on ESR so it receives the security updates normally but features at a later stage.

And who still uses YouTube when there are alternatives like invidius and Piped??

sandayle,
@sandayle@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

I didn’t know that. Thank you.

In my experience, Firefox and forks are never super fast. Installed Floorp Lightning and the speed is the same as Firefox.

Hiro8811, in How many of you run a Linux phone (Pine64, Librem etc) as your daily driver?

Why not try lineageo OS? I’ve been daily driving it for one year now and it’s reliably if you don’t throw magisk modules at it for fun.

MigratingtoLemmy,

Which recent devices other than the Pixels are supported?

Hiro8811,

A lot? They have a pretty big list and for all I know all are stable. wiki.lineageos.org/devices/

chitak166,

So fucking dumb how we have to look for specific models just to get support for smartphones.

Can you image if Linux only ran on HP and dell laptops?

bitwolf,

Hopefully when RISCv gets there it won’t be so bad.

Now that manufacturers are getting called out for it they tend to follow the support cycle upstream. Now, much of it falls on the chip makers, Qualcomm specifically supports chips for 5 years iirc (and 8 years for their industrial chips).

If the manufacturers can achieve vertical integration, like Apple has, with RISCv I think we’ll see a lot more mainlined support from them.

Hiro8811,

Unfortunately that’s moistly on maufacters. If they don’t release the kernel LOS can’t do anything. Also depending on the phone it might take a while till someone picks the phone and decides to support it. Laptops do have compatibility options. But I get what your saying, it is annoying but what did you expect from such organization?

EddoWagt,

It would be awesome if we could just install whatever like we can on pcs. On phones you still need a developer to make a specific rom for that device, we were close with Generic System Images (GSIs), but I don’t think they really went anywhere

Hiro8811,

I think you can but I’m not sure. There’s Ubuntu Touch that works on some phones but it’s really buggy

unionagainstdhmo,
@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar

It’s just the shit design of Android: no bios and firmware must be bundled in the rom

s38b35M5,
@s38b35M5@lemmy.world avatar

I second the recommendation for lineage OS. I’ve been using it since 2011 with my Nexus S (when it was Cyanogen). Works, defaults to de-googled, but easy to install gapps at the same time (follow instructions because it needs to be done before first boot).

I’ll never run a stock ROM again if I can help it, and so far…

ultra,

I threw magisk modules at it for fun and it’s still reliable.

Hiro8811,

If you have bootlop saver you can throw whatever. I have like six of them

ultra,

I don’t have it, thanks for telling me about it

Hiro8811,

No problems. It’ll automatically disable all scripts so youll have to manually enable them in case of bootfail.

ultra,

Doesn’t safe mode do that as well?

Hiro8811,

As far as I know no. You probably could use adb to remove the scripts tho

    No. To root you need to extract boot.img, patch it in the app then flash it while in bootloader.

    We can’t even get widespread adoption on workstations, what are the chances we’ll ever get them on mobile?

    It’s all the same problems. There aren’t nearly enough people using it for developers to spend their time developing compatible versions of their software, much less ones with a mobile-friendly interface.

    Maybe they’ll work with PWAs but those still suck.

    cows_are_underrated,

    There’s a simple reason to change that: use it. Recommend it to your friends. And yet there are great Linux mobile OSes(as example Graphen OS.

    helenslunch,

    I couldn’t possibly recommend it to anyone who is not a programmer. It doesn’t work for shit. The simplest and most basic things like just installing software is nigh-impossible for normies.

    Graphene OS isn’t anymore Linux than any other Android rom

That desktop are you using (ex: Gnome, KDE, etc) and what model of laptop, the full hardware specs including CPU, GPU, WiFi model, etc. Finally, you’ll want to look at the system logs to see if there’s anything useful in there after resuming from sleep (journalctl).

    just_another_person, (edited ) in Suspension on my laptop (closing the lid) causes Wifi to not be available.

    I’m not sure what the question here is. Are you wondering which level of suspension you want your laptop to go into when you close the lid?

    You should understand ACPI sleep states when trying to setup whatever active states you want your machine to be in when you close the lid, because there is a chain of events that happen when you do so. Your machine may only support one, or a few states (s0-s3) that may not allow this. The first step is above, and the second is understanding what state your machine is being put into once you close that lid, so start there with Mint configuration and how it’s dealing with the lid closing.
