lurch, in web/low memory alternatives to Krita and GIMP please

Idk what “container” means in this case, but gimp is only like 80 MB + some dependencies you probably already have installed. Do you mean RAM or HD memory? In any case it should be much less than 64 GB.

the Linux terminal of chromeOS is a virtual machine but it does affect chromeOS, as in everything that gets downloaded from the terminal will show up as applications of course!!

give azpainter a try, it’s what i used to use for drawing with a 2007 dual core laptop until not too long ago

heads up, the ui is kind of a mess, you most likely will have to re arrange it to your liking and there is a bit of a learning curve there, but it’s a pretty powerful piece of drawing/painting software nonetheless

GreyFalcon, in Manjaro OS

I have manjaro running on six machines. No problems that were not Just part of learning. Two of those computers were for testing different distros… All ended up with Manjaro.

Hate is for people that don’t create, or improve their own world.

kylian0087,

While on one hand Manjaro is very polished. Some things they do is questionable. Like the time they suggested to change your date and time because they let their repo keys expire. Or accidentally DDOS the AUR. Just to name some. The Manjaro team has a rather bad track record of these things.

interceder270,

That stuff is negligible compared to Mint getting hacked and hosting a malicious ISO.

But for some reason you never hear people mention that about Mint 🤷

neige, in What distro would you recommend for a 32-bit old Acer One laptop?

MX, anything else is a farce

Doll_Tow_Jet-ski,

I've been using MX since it was Mepis. I love seeing it said well recommended in this thread. For the old laptop I'll go with AntiX

WeLoveCastingSpellz, in Manjaro OS

Endavour OS

Have you tried photopea.com ? I dunno if it’s light enough for you, but it’s basically Photoshop in your browser, done in JavaScript.

01adrianrdgz,
@01adrianrdgz@lemmy.world avatar

yes of course!! Thank you! But I also want a web app for drawing, Photopea is mostly for image editing.

lukas, (edited )
@lukas@lemmy.haigner.me avatar

I’m not sure what you mean. Artists use Photoshop for drawing, yet Adobe advertises Photoshop mostly for image editing. Even though Adobe advertises Photoshop for image editing, which should include fully editing your own photographs imo, the only proper Denoise AI is built into Lightroom lol. Photopea also supports pressure sensitivity, so it should work just fine for drawing. Tools aren’t that big of a deal. People who design beautiful presentation decks use PowerPoint after all… with the default system fonts.

Lazpaint might be worth a look. Also Mypaint

ProdigalFrog, in web/low memory alternatives to Krita and GIMP please

KDE’s MS paint alternative is actually pretty decent, I believe it’s called Kolourpaint.

I’m also aware of Pinta.

01adrianrdgz,
@01adrianrdgz@lemmy.world avatar

thank you very much but is Kolourpaint a web app?? Because I don’t want to install anything from the Linux terminal!! I will use chromeOS with web apps.

ProdigalFrog, (edited )

It’s not a webapp, I recommended them since you mentioned you wanted low storage alternatives in addition to webapps.

MachineFab812,

Then why bother mentioning that you have Linux container enabled?

01adrianrdgz, (edited )
@01adrianrdgz@lemmy.world avatar

because I changed my mind on that, I’m very sorry!! It can be harmful to install through the terminal nya… Also I think it takes more memory and space if I install it like that, that’s why I installed Firefox with the Debian package yes!!

MachineFab812,

You mean a debian package like this one?

packages.debian.org/bullseye/kolourpaint

Yoddel_Hickory, in Surface Go 2 with 4GB Ram and 4425Y worth it?

I have the 128 GB storage 8 GB RAM, it’s still very usable. I often get annoyed with the small SSD, I’d assume 64 GB is way too small. Also if I remember correctly the 64 GB version has much slower eMMC storage, while the 128 GB and up have a real SSD.

olafurp, in What distro would you recommend for a 32-bit old Acer One laptop?

I’d recommend Alpine and running it headless. Realistically you’d need 4GB+ of ram to run a modern desktop session so that’s not ideal. However running Alpine headless will leave you with 800M to run programs.

You can still run a GUI desktop on it but I’d recommend having a nice sized swap partition/file to make up for it. It’ll be slow as soon as you hit the 1GB memory and starting swapping out.

lemmyvore,

It’s not the desktop that needs 4 GB, it’s large apps like modern browser or office. The desktop will run fine on 1 GB. May want to look into Midori and Abiword as alternatives.

olafurp,

Absolutely correct, Alpine can run a desktop environment with 500 megs.

dino, in Arch or NixOS?

You didn’t mention a single argument for why you would need a reproducible system. It sounds more like the buzz around immutable systems makes you think you are losing out on something, which is not the truth.

ik5pvx, in What distro would you recommend for a 32-bit old Acer One laptop?

You might be able to reset the root password by booting to single user, or using a rescue usb.

That said, you could take the chance to try one of the BSDs.

NoisyFlake, in Manjaro OS

There’s not really any benefit of running Manjaro over Arch, it will only introduce problems over time. If you want a “pre-configured” Arch with a nice installer, go for EndeavourOS, it’s great!

interceder270, (edited )

I just wanna point out, people were using this exact same rhetoric when Antergos was a thing.

Antergos is no longer a thing. Just saying. Manjaro still is though! I believe it’s older than endeavor OS.

NoisyFlake, (edited )

Even if Endeavour stopped development tomorrow, I could still use and update my system normally because it’s using the regular Arch repos.

lemmyvore,

Manjaro has graphical tools that make it super easy to manage packages, drivers and kernel versions.

NoisyFlake,

I‘m pretty sure you can install a GUI for pacman on Arch/Endeavour.

lemmyvore,

You can but there isn’t a lot of choice, Octopi is pretty much the only other pacman GUI besides Pamac that’s sufficiently fleshed out. All the others are either just package searchers or CLI-only.

And Manjaro also has the Manjaro Settings Manager, which includes the kernel management module and the hardware drivers management module.

N3M, (edited ) in Surface Go 2 with 4GB Ram and 4425Y worth it?

A month or so ago I picked up an 8gb model and it’s been really nice, I wrote a blog post about it if you’re interested and have been really happy with it. 4gb is enough for note taking & code writing, web browsing, reading, and YouTube watching (at low/mid resolutions) and I actually got away with those on a 2gb RAM 16gb storage Chromebook + Debian for a while. Still though, if you can spring for 8gb of ram that will be helpful, and a necessity if you want to do things like run waydroid.

Gnome works great, just be sure to set up the on screen keyboard and run the custom hot corners plugin to make it work everywhere. Also, I know that chromium doesn’t have the best reputation in these parts, but you’ll probably need to use either a WebKit or chromium browser for their touch controls and PWAs.

I went with Debian, but I can’t imagine Fedora offering a much different experience. Mine worked fine without a surface specific kernel, but results may vary from device to device.

Last, I bought mine used for $99 US on EBay. Not sure how it varies from country to country but at least in the states you can find older surface models in decent condition starting at $70 US or $100 US for ones in like new condition with a keyboard & charger.

Edit: beyond Surfaces, if you’re deal hunting and don’t mind more research I believe most 2 in 1s running Windows or ChromeOS will accept a custom OS.
