I dunno, the people in the top left look pretty happy.

drcabbage, (edited )

They do, and judging by their environment, pretty wealthy as well. Plus a happy family. As opposed to being unhinged enough to give finger guns to a laptop or be bombarded with “tech stuff”. Great ad for gnome :)

(I’m just joking around. KDE is great too.)

I think it very depends on your hardware. I, personally, never had problems with it, on thinkpad which I use right now WiFi drivers were out of box even in Gentoo minimal ISO(It uses iwlwifi). But, every hardware that I have is about 10yo. And I think I haven’t any non-intel WiFi-cards.

But also one of my friends had to compile drivers for his card manually from github, and second friend had issues with his WiFi constantly disconnecting which we couldn’t solve.

kala_telo,
@kala_telo@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

And also I never had nvidia chips, I have one very old from AMD, and other computers use just intel integrated graphic.

0x4E4F,

Yeah, I use whatever integrated I can get 😂. Don’t game, 2 monitors is more than enough for me, so 🤷 😂.

0x4E4F,

That might also be a general network drivers vs. kernel version problem as well. I’ve had that on some Ubuntu falvors on various cards, it isn’t specific to just wi-fi, it happened on lan as well (just disconnects for a few ms and then connects again).

And yeah, one of the many reasons why I usually buy second hand hardware as well. One, it’s a lot cheaper, two, drivers for Linux are usually not a problem 😁.

SeeMinusMinus, in It's OK if you cry
@SeeMinusMinus@lemmy.world avatar

Just wait for the nvidia drivers lol

KISSmyOS,

I haven’t had any recent issue with those either. Just make sure both the nvidia driver and the kernel are from your distros repository, and you always update them both at the same time.

SeeMinusMinus,
@SeeMinusMinus@lemmy.world avatar

My new laptop has a nvidia card in it. One time it stopped working after a update so I downgraded the drivers so I can wait entail the next update they do work. Besides that it have worked great. I am on fedora so rpmfusion is where the drivers are from.

KDE is fairly unstable and requires me to change settings to make it work for me. Gnome just works

nte,

I really don’t see the worth in hassling with KDE. Theres nothing wrong with GNOME

AphoticDev,
@AphoticDev@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I used to love Gnome. Now I hate how it looks. Looks like they tried to mix MacOS and Android and just royally botched it.

librechad,

I have been actively using GNOME for about a year now, honestly, it is the best one out of all of the desktop enviorments availible right now. I’m also pretty sure GNOME just got $1M+ to continue working on it. I don’t mind the look, it is very simple.

ExfilBravo,

gnomelook.org

btr_fan87, (edited )

That link is incorrect. Should be gnome-look.org

possiblylinux127,

Well the good news is that you are free to use whatever you want

ILikeBoobies,

I think they nailed it

It’s what a desktop should look like

I wish people wouldn’t downvote comments like this. The downvote button isn’t an “I disagree with you” button and downvoting people just because you disagree with their opinion is silly.

voidMainVoid,

Maybe not for you. For me, I spend hours fiddling with it trying to get it the way I want, get frustrated, and eventually go back to KDE.

voidMainVoid,

GNOME doesn’t even have the settings I need to make it work.

Holzkohlen,

Yo, what? Nobody ever uses Gnome without extensions.

possiblylinux127, (edited )

3er7nv

OK that’s not entirely true as I use blur my shell and dash to dock

psud,

That’s such a role reversal. It used to be that gnome couldn’t do half the things KDE could, and was too configurable to be easy

The good news: Broadcom got out of the labtop industry

Bad news: Broadcom is in the phone industry

0x4E4F,

Really? They don’t do Wi-Fi and BT chips any more?

possiblylinux127,

I think they still do some but its rare to find a Broadcom device

No, that buried deep in the box with suppressed memories. So thank you for reminding me.

Gotta love notebooks and their weird and rarely wonderful Wifi-Chips attached via SDIO. Even the intel cards can have problems!

kautau,

Now we’re in the realm of weird sound drivers from integrated chipsets. Thankfully sof-firmware exists

They can use steamCMD. If they don’t want to switch to Linux, we don’t need to shove things down.

This is more like desktop enviromment vs window manager users

Abnorc,

Are there people that use window managers without using desktop environments? I thought that one is a component of the other.

brisk,

Absolutely, there are a good few window managers designed to be standalone. I use AwesomeWM and i3 is very popular.

If you don’t need a full desktop environment it’s nice to have something that mostly stays out of the way.

prunerye,

I don’t think you need to go full WM-onlyism to find yourself unable to relate to Gnome users. There are probably a handful of KDE users who still use Chrome, but we usually have some shame. We’re not, like, trying to form HOAs in our neighborhoods like Gnome users are, probably.

I’m pretty sure if I dug into my backup-of a backup-of a backup-of a backup to get to my old files from the 00s I’d find this there. I might have even ironically had this picture on my Zune.

Of course tankie-shaming is something the RIAA would do to deter piracy…

I think it was created to make fun of the RIAA’s campaign back then, I don’t think they actually did it. Kind of like the “NAPSTER BAD” Metallica flash animation.

Proton works on any Linux distro, it comes with steam. As long as you can install steam, you should be golden.
