BananaTrifleViolin, in Year of Linux on the Desktop

Lots of choices but I’d probably use Kubuntu if your boyfriend is new to Linux and you want this “official” Proton support (not sure that actually means much; Proton works very well on most distros). The plasma interface can be set fairly similar to windows for a newbie to feel comfortable.

It’s all just personal preference of course; I just find the Ubuntu interface annoying as someone who uses Linux and windows a lot. Personally I use Mint; very nice distro, good and stable, nice for newbies, and the default cinnamon interface is very windows like too.

iraq_lobster, (edited ) in Year of Linux on the Desktop

did the same transition when switched to Lemmy. Very wise decision to take.

nitefox, in the main differences!!

It is accurate as you need to waste copius amount of time to get KDE to work without stutter

azerial,

Not my experience.

nitefox,

it is mine though

librechad,

We’re you using the correct drivers for your graphics card?

nitefox,

yes, I was. Also yes, it was a flagship gpu - the 6900 XT. KDE never worked for me, neither with the 1080ti nor the 6900xt… maybe it’s the AMD cpus, idk. Gnome has always been a stable experience though

Instant upvote because KDE is stupid underrated

FMEEE,

I don’t think it’s that underrated. But yah it’s a little underrated.

uis, in Cmake me!

Why you compile build system with build file generators?

lolcatnip,

If you’re compiling something huge like Chrome, having a separate compilation stage for the build files makes sense. For a normal sized project it’s overkill.

uis,
@uis@lemmy.world avatar

Meson does the same…

BoastfulDaedra, in This truly is the year of the linux desktop

More importantly, it’s the year of Windows 11… also known as the Inadvertent Year of the Linux Desktop.

This firefox hasn’t crashed. It behaves as expected on Slackware.

I like KDE cause it has a cute dragon. GNOME is a stinky foot.

A what? I've only ever seen the K cog.

toothpaste_sandwich,

We need a non-binary KDE dragon, it seems.

Cosmonaut_Collin, in So, timeshift or NixOS?
@Cosmonaut_Collin@lemmy.world avatar

For me it’s installing a new OS every six months for a fun new experience.

Geert,
@Geert@lemmy.world avatar

I have a USB drive bay. Just swap disks to play around with other distros. It’s pretty neat too

Cosmonaut_Collin,
@Cosmonaut_Collin@lemmy.world avatar

Well now I feel silly for not thinking about doing that.

Resonanz,

Me too

Geert,
@Geert@lemmy.world avatar

It actually works quite well. Seperate home partition and off you go 😁

penquin,
@penquin@lemmy.kde.social avatar

Wouldn’t that clutter your home partition since every distro you install has some things to put on there?

Geert,
@Geert@lemmy.world avatar

mv .config .config.old235 :D

lemming741,

I’m distro shopping right now, so I made a large “home” partition, and several smaller OS partitions (GPT FTW!). If I want things to “sync” (Docs, Downloads, .mozilla, .bashrc) I delete the /home/user/Music and symlink it to my /mnt/sharehome/Music .

Cosmonaut_Collin,
@Cosmonaut_Collin@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah that’s what I figured you’d do. Thank you for your wisdom.

TheWoozy,

I installed ubuntu on my workstation in 2013 and have upgraded the OS since. I’ve swapped out the motherboard and added 5 drives in raid6. The thing morphed from a desktop into a server over the years. The only original HW is the case (power supply died a few years ago). I never really concidered wiping & installing a new OS.

Aurenkin, in Firefox crash log

Ah I think I see the problem. Someone left in a sleep statement here

I wouldn’t expect logic from the company that now acts like unreal and unreal tournament which made them the company they are today don’t exist. Like seriously you delisted all of it. What is wrong with you!

Tillman, in Yeah, very sorry that this app is Windows only, would love to switch to Mac

Surprised about the comments. Mac OS is actually certified Unix whereas Linux distros, while wonderful, aren’t. I’ve never had to use windows for anything other than games in the 90’s so I can’t speak to it now. I’ve used Irix, then Linux, and now Mac professionally. I find Mac to be meh after Mojave. Perhaps BSD was the answer all along.

bruhduh,
@bruhduh@lemmy.world avatar

If you pay enough money to people in important positions then even windows will be UNIX certified) nowadays everything is for sale

SapphironZA, in This truly is the year of the linux desktop

Hides my macOS KVM I setup for fun

Pantherina,

Very interesting, how do you do that? Can you even set it up without an A$ account?

Smokeydope,
@Smokeydope@lemmy.world avatar

It requires a little bit of computer knowhow but is definitely possible, heres a video of a guy building a custom pc and installing macos on it Here is the open source software he used to do it
