Your friend: “I don’t think my system works”

seitanic,
@seitanic@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

“Be patient. It’s compiling.”

“Well, when can I use my computer?”

“…Tomorrow.”

SomeBoyo,

If you’re lucky

Im_old,

Gather around kids, I’ll tell you a story of the olden days. Back when it first came out I installed gentoo, and at the time the recommended process was to start from stage1. And of course I was a true believer and spent a lot of time optimizing cflags. I could get the base system running in maybe half a day, on the third try on average (I was distro hopping a lot). I used gnome at the time, and it wasn’t that bad to bring it up. Less than 24 hours. But if you wanted openoffice (there was no libreoffice at the time), oh boy, you could say goodbye to your system for a good day and then some. Assuming that it didn’t fail and then you had to change cflags, recompile half the system and try again. But man, when it finished the system would fly sooo smooth.

Flyswat,

Meanwhile enjoy your improvised heater

    AlotOfReading,

It’s a little weird and very European, so OpenSUSE.

    accideath,

I can very much live with that. Love me some suse

It’s a web app, you don’t really need a native application for it.

    InFerNo,

I just use discord via the browser. Why would I allow it to harvest my data as an app?

    Chewy7324,

Because the desktop app works without having your phone around, if I remember correctly. It’s a relatively recent feature.

    InFerNo,

Why do you need your phone around for the web version?

    Chewy7324,

The web version isn’t a standalone client like Signal, which registers as an additional device with e2e. WhatsApp web communicates with the WhatsApp app, so it doesn’t work if the phone isn’t connected to the internet (in early versions it had to be the same network, if I remember correctly).

I believe WA introduced a feature which allowed the desktop app to function standalone like Signal. Signal Desktop adds a second device with it’s own keys, so contacts send automatically messages to two devices. I’m not sure if it works the same for WA, and if they even have the feature. I don’t have a compatible desktop.

    InFerNo,

I never mentioned whatsapp, I don’t use it

    Chewy7324,

Oopsie. Seems like I missed discord in your comment. I thought you were talking about WhatsApp.

    Flax_vert,

Push to talk… And I think that’s literally it 😂

    Amends1782,

They have to do it on fucking purpose right? Only allow keybinds so you have to get the client so they can collect user data

    Flax_vert,

No, it’s probably because websites running in Chrome might lack the ability to detect keystrokes in the background. If they did, that’s a very very concerning security risk.

If they wanted to force you, they’d just disable the web app lmao

    Amends1782,

    Fair enough

    shea,

i bet you could find some little tool to replace that easily. sucks though

    Flax_vert,

It makes sense. Websites in a browser shouldn’t be able to detect keystrokes outside of the tab

If you use JACK audio, then you can make it Unix-way. Or use hardware PTT.

EDIT: or just mute/unmute mic system-wide

    lastweakness,

The Windows-only app is way better. You can make calls for example.

It’s all semantics. In my mind, the OS is Tux Racer, and the kernel is Ubuntu.

I’m currently learning FreeCAD so that the one machine I still have sitting around to run Fusion360 can be liberated from Windows at long last. And as a bonus I won’t have to keep updating NoMachine every couple weeks.

    thantik, (edited )

FreeCAD is such garbage though. In something like 6 months, CadSketcher blender plugin made something that was far more functional, and FreeCAD has been in development for 20 years and it still can’t provide a logical, cohesive CAD experience.

Honestly, Solidworks is my hangup too, so I get the willingness to castrate yourself in order to just move to Linux finally. I’m thinking of moving over to their 3DExperienceWorks product that runs in the browser. If it handles my workflow, and I can get the cheap “maker” license without them ever asking me to upgrade it, then I’m finally down to switch full time.

The other big problem that I generally have is window-decoration and padding. I need to find a window manager where I can have things with embedded tabs but pixel-perfect edges. I like a single-pixel edge to my applications and as dense as possible window title bars.

Now that Firefox is releasing Wayland enabled by default, it might be the time to try again.

    HeyLow,

I feel that the no machine updates are insane

Might be, but all remote access software sucks to some degree. I’d much rather not need it all by not having an old windows box I need to remote into.
