Any time you see a video of a cat backing up and saying “no no no no no” it’s because they’re watching the researcher’s hand move toward the on switch of that centrifuge.

I had a similar car, the 1990 Ford Escort Pony. It had a hamster for an engine, but it was fine because the body was a shoebox.

Not long ago on Lemmy this was a goal, not a problem.

I think they’re just called subtitles, but I’d be happy for someone to prove me wrong because they deserve a more interesting term.

And just because no one else has said it I’ll ad one of my favorite book titles: “Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus.” Shelley showed off some of her writing chops right there on the cover. And its one of the only times I can use a semicolon and know that I’m doing so correctly.

watch -n 1 date

Bishma,
@Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

it runs the date command once per second until you hit ctrl+c

If we’re adding dramatic flourish, I’ll suggest watch -n 1 ‘date | cowsay’

Further evidence that the world ended in 2012, and its just a slower process than John Cusack movies led us to believe.

Been doing that for a few years now. Pretty soon all those hobbies just become more of the same background noise. I have nothing more to show for life, but I do have a lot of expensive clutter and knowledge that no one wants me to share.

The instrument I want to learn to play (but have no reason to do so) is the hammered dulcimer.

The instrument that most makes me perk up when I hear it in a song is the bass (or contrabass) saxophone.

The music video for Baker Street is like a 1970s time capsule

18+ What's your favorite episode of MST3k? (lemmy.world)

I remember one day hearing my father downstairs laughing his ass off. Went down to see what was so funny to find he had just discovered Mystery Science Theater 3000, and was losing it watching The Giant Gila Monster. I sat down to watch. I didn’t really get it then, but I’ve been a fan ever since.

Mitchell is a go to for me.

Joel’s snowy farewell, Mike narrowly missing death, and it got the cast/crew physically threatened by Joe Don Baker.

FYI for anyone just reminded of the show: !mst3k

This is one of the harder episodes to find. Tjardus Greidanus lives up to the name he’s given durning the opening credits and doesn’t allow Shoutcast to have a license for the movie and will frequently go copyright strike anyone that puts the episode up online.

I use the movie to introduce people to the show. It sets up the whole universe without tons of in-jokes that newbies won’t understand. And “This Island Earth” is a weird combo of being a decent enough movie while still being infinitely mockable.

deflagration

I had to look it up for this post. My brain’s inability to recall the word for detonation velocities lower than the speed of sound wasn’t an issue until rotating detonation engines started to make news and I’ve needed to explain the difference between explosions and deflagrations to people.

Ages ago (80’s I think) there was talk of making lead free solder the only type that was available to consumers, and my great uncle (a deal horder) went out and got 2 cases of radioshack 64/40 resin core. Pretty sure it’s the same stuff you can still buy today, but I’ve got another 4 spools in my kit (that are old enough to drink).

In my uncles defense sometimes his deal hording paid off. He once saved a family reunion when our venue fell through because he happened to have a dozen brand new hibachi grills in the apartment he rented just for his stuff. And he made a small fortune when he bought a bunch of freon before it went off the market.

Out of nowhere I woke up with “Bond Theme’s From The Early 80s” by Paul Williams stuck in my head. NZ Taskmaster Paul Williams, not 70’s songwriter Paul Williams.
