Same thing I did with it this year. Send emails, write documents, watch movies, watch YouTube, play KSP and Astroneer, program some c++, design hobby PCBs, look at porn...

make sure to go team red with the GPU, they tend to have less issues on Linux than NVIDIA cards

Jumuta, in I love vim

I love vim and vim based editors.

I used to use stock Vim but recently I’ve started using Helix which is like a more user friendly version of vim (copying to clipboard is easy) and I’m loving it!

lemmesay,
@lemmesay@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

wow, good to know that there are still terminal-based text editors being developed.

I’ll surely try it.

Jumuta,

Helix is pretty cool, I think the Lemmy devs use it too.

I use it because it’s purple and I like purple.

lemmesay,
@lemmesay@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

royal choice, I see :)

BeardedGingerWonder,

If it’s easier to use how are we supposed to keep the Emacs people away?

sickday,
@sickday@kbin.social avatar

+1 for Helix. I found it recently and it feels way easier to make changes and add support for new languages.

MigratingtoLemmy,

If only they would support vim keybindings

Add a Javascript dependency into the kernel. You’re welcome.

Shit, I barely remebered :q to exit the damn thing 😂.

lemmesay,
@lemmesay@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

opening vim and hitting every key on a keyboard to exit it makes for a strong password.

Ooops,
@Ooops@kbin.social avatar

You just type ZZ... then the program assumes you fell asleep trying to exit and stops.

Yep, exactly like that when I first opened Vi/Vim 🤣.

Nop, not here. (BTW that was in '89)

However when opening emacs in '94 I opened an xterm to kill it (on IRIX).

Keep using Linux, for the 30th year. Started in '94 with Slackware 1.2, RedHat 1/1.1 in '95 and switched to Debian at the end of '95 (0.93 R5 or R6). I was running OS/2 for my BBS in that time, with a link to my Linux system with internet since august '95. I had a terminal with null-modem cable next to my bed for IRC, 10 Mbit connection at my room. (campus of UTwente in the Netherlands)

Was fun messing about with that stuff.

I can see you’re a person of culture.

lemmesay, in I love vim
@lemmesay@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

explanation for the command ci":
c: change. analogous to delete(d) followed by insert(i)
i: inside
": the double quote
so, it’s basically change inside double quote(easier to remember as it sounds exactly what it does).
you can similarly do di((delete inside parenthesis).

an inferior alternative on vscodium would be shift + alt + right/left arrow

ExLisper,

What about yi’'?

lemmesay,
@lemmesay@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

that also works. thought users would figure that out.

somenonewho, in I love vim

Funny I had to Google ci" to remember what it does even though I use that sometimes.

I’ve committed to learning vim years ago and in most situations im faster in vim than in nano etc. (especially because of muscle memory) I still feel like I’m not properly using vim to it’s full extend (like whenever I remember using registers it feels like magick and I’m sure there’s more like that)

lemmesay,
@lemmesay@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

how often do you use macros on a day-to-day basis? it’s next on my learning list.

dukk,

I personally use them pretty often. They’re not natural to me, I spend a little bit thinking about them, but they’re still decently useful.

puppy, (edited ) in I love vim

TIL. Thanks OP. I have been using “vi” followed by “x” followed by “i” all this time.

cabhan,

For what it’s worth, you can replace xi with just s or c

Telodzrum, in Come tell Tux🐧your Linux plans for next year to cheer him up

Made the switch to full-time daily driver Linux this year instead of dual booting. Next year is the year of Arch.

Murdoc,

I’m wanting to do that, and steam has made it possible, but I have just a couple of games holding me back still. Not the games’ fault, it’s just that I’d have to buy them again on steam and I’m po’.

Telodzrum,

I managed to get the last few of mine like that (all Ubisoft, fuck them) running through Lutris. I know some people swear by bottles, too.
