The choice of desktop environment is much more relevant for users than those coreutils. KDE/Linux it is

Let's put an end to this systemd-debated!

zephr_c, in big deal

I don’t care what you call it. Call it Steve if you want. GNU/Linux is awkward to say and will never catch on though.

It’s actually Linux and Linux’s Monster, but most people get the monster’s name wrong.

WereCat, (edited ) in It's (usually) already installed

Not anymore. Just open PowerShell

winget install whateveryouwant

odelik, (edited )

At least in win11.

Not sure about win10, which didn’t have it installed by default orginally, but could be now? None of my win 10 machines are recent enough fresh installs to confirm, and have winget (and choco) installed because I installed it so I can install stuff easily.

rmuk,

On Windows 10 it was automatically installed as an update using - wait for it - the Microsoft Store.

Yes, the system-wide package manager was distributed as a package in the desktop store. 🤌

WereCat,

No idea about 10 either

Microsoft doesn’t need to even be involved

Well, the kernel is Linux and the OS is whatever the distribution or special purpose is called.

There is a distinction as Linux is used in far more than operating systems and at times is run with just the kernel and an application, with no possible interface between any user and application.

Problem is that most Linux desktop users have fuck all clue what Linux is all used for and wouldn't know how to interface with 99% of all the linux running devices on the planet.

badmemes,

But is that really a problem?

Endorkend,
@Endorkend@kbin.social avatar

Yeah, since you can also use a different Kernel and end up with something that looks like a Linux distribution, anyone who has ever used common Linux distributions is instantly familiar with, while definitely not being Linux.

If your goal is absolutely no GNU Linux, Chimera Linux is your jam.

If using a single program makes a distro part of that program’s organization, then Linux’s name gets really long.

I’m choosing neither… Debian, Fedora, Pop or Arch. That’s what I’m choosing from…

Way back in 2003, I had a school project partner over to do some work on a project. They had a floppy that was infected with some malicious stuff and had planned to utterly trash my computer with it. I only found out at a later date because some guys were asking me questions about my computer, and someone spilled the beans whenever they realised that my computer wasn’t infected and was indeed still functioning completely fine…
