Reminder that compilation from source is absolutely futile to support because of the arbitrary nature of libs and deps on the machine at time of build and replication of the environment for repro. KThx

Aspiring to becoming and staying a billionaire requires a certain amount of psychopathy because it takes a certain mentality to want to own so much wealth that you’ll never be able to enjoy all of it in a lifetime while at the same time denying or taking away the wealth of others who might need it.

If I had a billion, I’d take a few million and live off the interest and give away the rest and not be bothered by anyone or anything ever again.

If your friend ends up not liking the GNOME desktop environment because it’s so radically different from the Windows UI, then maybe add the K in Ubuntu, I guess.

only0218, (edited )

Or just go the mint route. No real UX difference to windows and closer to an fully open source base at no cost.

A_Random_Idiot,

if they’re a gamer and just want games to work, Nobara is a far better choice.

only0218,

Well it very much does just work on mint. Selinux could potentially screw people but it seems better than that one arch based “extremely optimised” (forgot name) distro which broke on my first install. And fedora base is quite solid.

did the same transition when switched to Lemmy. Very wise decision to take.

Jumuta, in I love vim

I love vim and vim based editors.

I used to use stock Vim but recently I’ve started using Helix which is like a more user friendly version of vim (copying to clipboard is easy) and I’m loving it!

wow, good to know that there are still terminal-based text editors being developed.

I’ll surely try it.

Helix is pretty cool, I think the Lemmy devs use it too.

I use it because it’s purple and I like purple.

computerscientistI, in Linus does not fuck around

I wonder if the guys here who are moaning like the snowflakes they are about Linus’ way of conveying the message (not the message itself) are from the US? I sometimes really wonder about the US mindset. The boss is critisizing you justifyably but in an inadequate tone? Hell breaks lose. But as an employee insisting on healthcare, an adequate number of days on paid time off, unionazing or at least have an able workers’ representation? Nah, that’s unheard of.

How about having some priorities? Grow a pair and chose your battles more wisely. The boss criticizes you? If he’s right, own up to your mistakes. Want some rights you are actually entitled to? Yeah, that’s what you fight for.

SK4nda1,

Telling your coworker “Shut the fuck up?” Is not acceptable. The way communication happens matters.

Sanyanov,

Here’s a crazy idea: have both!

Don’t allow your boss to speak to you like that, unionize, and fight for your workers rights - including the right for dignity and respect, listed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, but also for higher pay and better working conditions.

How does one hurt the other?

Also, I’m Russian.

Found “recent” post on LWN.

After twenty plus years of watching LKML and Linus’s behavior in general, I have to concur with you. Reading a lot of the ‘linus is an asshole’ threads, there’s generally a clear runup towards an outburst.

Just recently he called some developers out because it seemed evident they weren’t testing their patchsets on bare metal. So it’s not just code that gets called out, it’s also development methods that end up causing upstream pain.

Arbiter, in Linus does not fuck around

The fact that people here value feelings and pretty expressions more over quality, standards and passion shows exactly how human civilization will decline into mediocrity and sickness.

CasualPenguin,

Your subpar ability to understand that the self fellating anger in that email is in no way something that generates quality and standards says much more about the decline to mediocrity.

Spzi,

False dichotomy.

squaresinger,

So you are saying personal offenses and coleric bosses are required to deliver quality?

How does screaming and shouting like a little kid in a temper tantrum increase quality?

If you need to resort to personal offenses to get your point across, you are either lacking a good point, communication skills or respect.

And behaving like a toddler tends to make people really respect you, right?

havocpants,

Nonsense. It’s simply that that kind of conduct is deeply unprofessional and reflects poorly on Linus. He could have said the exact same things about the issues with that patch without the obscenities and personal attacks.

I’ve worked as a software team lead for nearly 30 years, you do not get the best out of people by belittling and berating them.

Eh, my main reason for going KDE is every time I try Gnome, it feels like “what do I do now” and “where is the program I opened”

I know that would get better with time spent using it, but then again, KDE feels like I can make it do what I want a lot easier

And none of the other DEs look as nice and polished, which, I know, that’s not the important part … But dammit, I’m gonna be spending a lot of time staring at it, I’d like it to look good to me at least

WaxedWookie, (edited )

The last time I was meaningfully using Linux was around the time of Ubuntu 8.04 - my experience was the opposite of this.

When I have the time, I’ll be dipping back in on Zorin (which I think defaults to modded KDE) - I’ve spun up VM, and it seems like it’s worth a shot… I just need to confirm it’ll play the small handful of games I play, find a slicer app, and pull the trigger. Damn near everything else is Web-based or self-hosted.

laurelraven,

Yeah, Gnome is VERY different than in 2008

psud,

Gnome is better on that now, but I have been using gnome since back when KDE was using non-free libraries to be prettier

Gnome probably isn’t the best free desktop anymore, but I guess I’m used to it

laurelraven,

There’s a lot to be said for familiarity and its impact on productivity… Which is why I hate when UI layouts change for no apparent reason other than to be different.

psud,

It’s also good to try and work the way the system is designed for — or maybe to share a way of working with the design leads

Gnome likes you to have several things open, spread across the different desktops, and you really want to know the shortcuts for jumping between stuff

WhiskyTangoFoxtrot,

That’s why I stopped using Gnome. I loved Gnome 2.x, but then they went all screwey with Gnome 3 so I switched to Cinnamon.

possiblylinux127, in the main differences!!

KDE is fairly unstable and requires me to change settings to make it work for me. Gnome just works

nte,

I really don’t see the worth in hassling with KDE. Theres nothing wrong with GNOME

AphoticDev,
@AphoticDev@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I used to love Gnome. Now I hate how it looks. Looks like they tried to mix MacOS and Android and just royally botched it.

librechad,

I have been actively using GNOME for about a year now, honestly, it is the best one out of all of the desktop enviorments availible right now. I’m also pretty sure GNOME just got $1M+ to continue working on it. I don’t mind the look, it is very simple.

I wish people wouldn’t downvote comments like this. The downvote button isn’t an “I disagree with you” button and downvoting people just because you disagree with their opinion is silly.

voidMainVoid,

Maybe not for you. For me, I spend hours fiddling with it trying to get it the way I want, get frustrated, and eventually go back to KDE.

voidMainVoid,

GNOME doesn’t even have the settings I need to make it work.

Holzkohlen,

Yo, what? Nobody ever uses Gnome without extensions.

possiblylinux127, (edited )

3er7nv

OK that’s not entirely true as I use blur my shell and dash to dock

psud,

That’s such a role reversal. It used to be that gnome couldn’t do half the things KDE could, and was too configurable to be easy

nitefox, in the main differences!!

It is accurate as you need to waste copius amount of time to get KDE to work without stutter

azerial,

Not my experience.

nitefox,

it is mine though

librechad,

We’re you using the correct drivers for your graphics card?

nitefox,

yes, I was. Also yes, it was a flagship gpu - the 6900 XT. KDE never worked for me, neither with the 1080ti nor the 6900xt… maybe it’s the AMD cpus, idk. Gnome has always been a stable experience though
