Engineers and designers made it great. Reddit could very well exist without capitalism (see Lemmy). What fucked up Reddit was explicitly capitalist incentives.
It was a pedo networking tool reknowned worldwide for it’s jailbate and non-consensual creepshots. These moderators received awards from admins. Then it got too much attention and got a PR workover, burning a woman CEO at the stake to satiate the gamer-fascists before becoming a bland Atlanticist CIA sockpuppet front of bland corporate posts.
At no point during this entire thing did it ever approach anything comparable to greatness
There is no balance though, the shit-ification that happened to Reddit is a necessary function of capitalism. What we saw as Reddit at its best was, from a capitalist’s perspective, Reddit at its worst. I’m sure you’ve noticed a similar process taking place in lots of other areas as well.
You left reddit because of capitalism. What is an IPO? It is the launch of a business onto the public capital markets to release equity and to enrich its existing owners. What do all businesses on the markets operate on? Short term growth for the next financial quarter optimised to enrich their investors (shareholders) in the shortest amount of time possible.
Capitalism consistently destroys everything you enjoy and yet you defend it relentlessly while asking for long term thinking, which is not a feature of capitalism. When you wake up to this reality you might actually start to question “maybe the socialists are right about a few things” and spend some time with us learning what we actually believe.
But you know what happened after Reddit turned to crap? Because no one actually has to use Reddit, because Reddit is just a bunch of bored nerds and Reddit is just a bunch of forums, eventually someone realised: “wait a minute, I can code this in a few weeks and make it way less crappy than most social media. And maybe if I make it all open, a whole ecosystem of social networks can grow together”. And when Reddit turned to crap, “the invisible hand” acted and people slowly started to migrate over to lemmy and other social media and now reddit is just a bunch of bots
Mate please check my profile. I have been here for 3 fucking years. Lemmy did not magically appear in a few weeks that is incredibly offensive to the sheer amount of work my comrades have put in to make it.
And calling their work “the invisible hand of the market” is also nonsensical. Because the forces driving its creation, and the rest of us communists that support it, are the destruction of the markets. There is not one single jot of profit motive involved in Lemmy. You seem to recognise some of the problems of capitalism but consistently come to incorrect conclusions about everything because you have spent no time whatsoever getting a real political education and understanding the forces at work.
And you fail to ask yourself what happens to your “market forces” alternative to reddit. In any scenario where the market is responsible for replacing reddit the market will also bring it back to exactly the same point of self-destruction through pursuit of capital. You will hurt yourself all over again.
Hexbear.net (spun off from r/chapotraphouse, banned on Reddit in 2019 for fascist propaganda), has downvotes disabled on their entire instance, so that's one. Please note that though they claim to be "leftist," their users' primary focus is spreading right wing propaganda via strawman and red herring tactics, usually in swarms.
It’s also something I’ve pointed out in the past that netted me bans on other instances (not just the community but the whole instance)
My instance has down votes disabled as well and it’s something that has made me want to switch instances at times. Not to mention the admin really wanting to federate with Hexbear which is absolutely not popular with the users on the instance.
Oh wow, the blahaj admin wants to federate with them? That is unfortunate and more than a little disappointing. I'm sorry to hear that, I hope they figure it out soon and decide not to federate, because they'd just be exposing their users to fascist recruitment propaganda that is specifically tailored to the LBGTQ+ community. JFC, that would be awful.
The Hexbears' support for the queer community, as I'm sure you're aware (I'm saying this to promote general awareness), is superficial at best and in reality is a major part of their recruitment machine. They operate just like extreme right wing orgs: they target a specific disenfranchised group with the claim that they hear them, support them, and will fight for their rights, but in practice they take advantage of their already-present anger by funneling it towards a specific political target...in this case, the "liberal western world." The Hexbear ethos tells them that western values are the reason why they are being oppressed, and in the process they (somewhat ironically) become radicalized instruments of hate.
It's fucked up and really sad, and it's hard to get through to people just how dangerous this group is. A common defense is that the Hexbears are harmless because they think the Hexbear trolling approach is funny and that Hexbears don't come right out and say they are pro-Russia or deny genocide is happening in the world... it can be real difficult to get people to think critically and see past the manipulation tactics. But it's there, plain as day, it is a hate group.
But I digress. People need to know that these are not innocent good people. I will continue to speak out against these fascists, and I hope you do the same.
There's a megathread on their front page right now dedicated to Joseph Stalin. Now, they'll argue all day over semantics and adamantly state that Stalin was merely a misunderstood communist, but functionally there's no difference between how he ran Russia compared to the shit going on in Germany and Italy at the time. The guy was a fascist dictator who murdered millions of people, including the members of the opposition he ordered to be executed. Not to mention the forced labor camps (Gulag), the censorship, government control of all media, state-authorized violence and murder...these are the things their hero did. They are in no way indicative of left wing tenets, nor are they merely anti-capitalist in nature. That shit goes way beyond hating capitalism...that is fuckin' fascism.
Can you point me at the right wing propaganda on hexbear? Someone elsewhere in this thread said blahaj has downvotes disabled so that might be two.
It’s interesting to me that hexbear disabled downvotes because of downvoting campaigns against lgbt users, cultivated a culture of replying instead, federated with blahaj, broke with blahaj and now blahaj ostensibly removed downvotes.
If that’s so it’s incredibly poorly enforced to the point where complaining is unlikely to have any effect at all. Most Sites have a button that leads To a secondary menu where cookie preferences can be set. Perhaps this meets the mandate you speak of? It’s a much more common setup.
The serious answer is to whatever your country’s internet regulation agency is (assuming your in the EU, else you’re out of luck). So for example, in France that would be the CNIL, in Germany it’s the BfDI, etc.
Just FYI Germany likes to make things more difficult, so with federation every sub-area is separated in many aspects and has own agencies for different things..
BfDI is only responsible for health and internet-provider institutions (and a few more).
Otherwise you can send it to the one where the company is located at, or always where you are located at. (they will forward it, but that can take a few months, so better to submit where it has to go).
Also an easy way to store needed variables between pages. For news sites without a sign up this isn’t necessary but for actual web apps that live across different subdomains it can be a nice to have.
