i’m going through a really nasty divorce. ex called child services on me to say that i’m a danger to my kids. they started an investigation. the whole process got really dragged out. i haven’t been able to spend much time with my kids because while the investigation is ongoing, the judge ordered that i only would get them every other weekend from saturday morning til sunday evening. investigation wrapped up at the end of 2023. child services didn’t find any evidence that I’m a danger, and did in fact find evidence that my ex has been putting them in danger. 2024 will be the year I get my kids back and the year this divorce is finalized.

This is the exact same shit they said about the Viet Minh while incinerating millions of civilians in Southeast Asia. Fascist propaganda never changes.

Meanwhile, Isreal hides behind it’s entire population and uses the conflict it drafts them into as an excuse to commit genocide. Suck a tailpipe, genocide lover.

I feel better about it than I did about 2023.

It’s cuz we pre-ordered our copies of 2024 back in 2016. Limited edition year. All stock was already claimed by then.

The message to me was just that sometimes you have to sing and dance to entertain the people who have power over you. That doesn’t make the situation right, but I’ve gotten a lot more done since that realization.

haui_lemmy,

I think the important message is „informed decision“ instead of „indoctrination“.

You can decide to do something against your immediate self interest to get a greater benefit later.

But the way we were brought up was „do what you‘re told“ which leads to exploitation and endless suffering to provide for the exploiters.

Pulptastic, (edited ) in 6÷2(1+2)

I disagree. Without explicit direction on OOO we have to follow the operators in order.

The parentheses go first. 1+2=3

Then we have 6 ÷2 ×3

Without parentheses around (2×3) we can’t do that first. So OOO would be left to right. 9.

In other words, as an engineer with half a PhD, I don’t buy strong juxtaposition. That sounds more like laziness than math.

wlsnt,

as a half PhD Go read the article, it’s about you

How are people upvoting you for refusing to read the article?

Pulptastic,

I did read the article. I am commenting that I have never encountered strong juxtaposition and sharing why I think it is a poor choice.

flying_sheep, (edited )
@flying_sheep@lemmy.ml avatar

You probably missed the part where the article talks about university level math, and that strong juxtaposition is common there.

I also think that many conventions are bad, but once they exist, their badness doesn’t make them stop being used and relied on by a lot of people.

I don’t have any skin in the game as I never ran into ambiguity. My university professors simply always used fractions, therefore completely getting rid of any possible ambiguity.

fallingcats, (edited )

Yeah, but implicit multiplication without a sign is often treated with higher priority.

Pulptastic,

Is it though? I’ve only ever seen it treated as standard multiplication.

fallingcats,

Read TFA

The_Vampire,

Sure. That doesn’t mean it’s right to do.

fallingcats,

Please read the article, that’s exactly what it’s about. There is no right answer.

Fedizen,

Let them fight.

FunkyStuff, in How difficult is it to understand

Yeah, real resistance fighters should take advantage of all the empty space there is in the world’s densest city, so they can fight in a way that’s acceptable to white westerners! If only they were really trying to liberate themselves instead of pursuing their evil terroristic agendas, their movement would be morally unimpeachable and the whole world would recognize their plight. Alas, Israel killed a bunch of kids, which is Hamas’ fault actually, so we have no choice but to glass them. maybe-later-kiddo maybe later kiddos!

I am often wrong, but I cant imagine anything crazier than the 2016 election. What a ride.
