You taking about the elected officials, or the voters? You’ll have a much harder time finding politicians who are legitimately good people, let alone republicans.

ivanafterall,
@ivanafterall@kbin.social avatar

I used to work for Republicans, much to my chagrin. To your point: the elected officials know they are misleading ignorant average people. They understand exactly what they are doing, ESPECIALLY when they're at their most hypocritical. I heard it from their lips repeatedly. They are all fucked in the head, even in personal interactions. It's trashier WWE.

As a fediverse weird thing, aside from the log in process, using eternity is just wonderful. I left when infinity started requiring a subscription and this has been great, aside from the lack of content. I don’t ever have to the think of anything after the @

We don’t get to retire

gibmiser,

Try playing with this. Set the interest rate to 7%. Assume you will live to 75 (average us life expectancy) and retire at 65.

Now change the monthly contribution amount to the most you can comfortably contribute right now if you opened an IRA IRA.

This is your low estimate of your retirement savings. As you get older hopefully you earn more and can contribute more.

nutcase2690,

Just curious how you came up with 7%? I was always taught to expect the yearly return to be 4%

EmpathicVagrant,

4% stays ahead of normal inflation, 7% matches greedflation.

gibmiser,

My number I picked after reading about historical averages.

grue,

I found this even more helpful.

foggy,

Compounding interest is a hell of a drug.

Saving anything is infinitely better than saving nothing.

Retiring is possible for anyone with an education, but it is a sacrifice, and a gamble on not dying

bobs_monkey,

Anyone can save for retirement, even without a formal education. It just time and diligence to save, and then some reading to learn how to invest.

grue,

It just time and diligence to save

It’s just having the self-control to live below your means.

los_chill,

All of that requires a livable wage first. How many times do people have to prove that no amount of “dilligence” will allow people to live, let alone save on minimum wage in most places?

Rhynoplaz, in Reality Shattered

Everybody else is shooting you down here, But I’ll meet you in the middle with an even harder to swallow pill.

There are Republicans who AREN’T BAD people, they are just ignorant. Not stupid, necessarily, but ignorant and uneducated. They might think they’re doing good but they are very very wrong.

SuckMyWang,

Yes this is what I believe but im not right all the time either so I try to listen. Often it will just confirm what I thought to begin with but sometimes a see it a bit different

I worked with a guy that was a hard-core conservative, like just shy or real far-right talking points. Anyway he told me he doesn't watch the news. Not that he only watches fox news, I mean he doesn't watch any news at all. He gets his information from Facebook and tiktok

Even when I’m not active on Lemmy, I am not on Reddit.

If I ever need information from Reddit (unfortunately there is still a lot of information only on Reddit…), Wayback machine I go.

Even if me requesting that Wayback machine archive a page, once it’s saved we don’t need to give reddit anymore clicks, Wayback machine gets the clicks instead. It’s better than losing information outright.

Good thing bad thing penguin

FeelThePower, in F#€k $pez

honestly it’s replaced reddit for me in a good way, because it has just enough new content that I can check it before bed every day and scroll for a bit, but not enough to where I spend entire lunch breaks on it. sometimes I go days without even checking it. if anything it’s made my relationship with my browser / phone healthier than reddit.

BluesF,

100%, all I really want is something I can look at and perhaps sensibly chuckle at when I have a few minutes… Not a pasasitic brain worm that really wants me to pay attention to it.

HawlSera,

The only problem I have, is that I can’t seem to find the porn.

Jaarsh119,

There’s an entire instance dedicated to it: lemmynsfw.com

HawlSera,

I tried, but they never approved my account. I know they do it in waves, but I applied a month ago

shani66,

a lot of servers are really weird about porn, ngl. its not that they just don’t allow it on their server (which, cool, thats fine), its that they go out of their way to block it. its a new wave of puritanism and i don’t really like it. although porn isn’t that hard to find if you are on a good server.

HawlSera,

Do you know of a good server for that? Because I tried to sign up with Lemmy n sfw they never activated my account, and it was like a month ago.

And yeah, I’m not sure why the sex positivity movement seems to have completely reversed itself. There is this idea that the idea of sexuality of any kind is somehow inherently wrong. Which is stupid. I need all the fetishes

lichtmetzger,

Exactly. Lemmy is an anti-doomscrolling platform and that’s very healthy and amazing.

ArmokGoB,

Horseshit. Lemmy is plastered in content about climate change, the Middle East, and other depressing shit.

lemann,

Doomscrolling does not literally mean your feed is full of negative content lol, it’s just mindless scrolling

JackbyDev,

I think they mean doom scrolling as in algorithmic dopamine loops

lichtmetzger,

Exactly, and that the content eventually just ends. I didn’t mean that every post is positive news.

ElBarto,
@ElBarto@sh.itjust.works avatar

Filter that shit out then, that’s what I did.

KrankyKong,

I somehow replaced reddit with instagram reels and youtube shorts.

Twelve20two,

Ah, they got ya by the dopamine balls

KrankyKong,

Yeah they do. Would you believe me if i said giving up social media is harder than giving up nicotine?

dumpsterlid, (edited )

Give yourself some grace, yes corporate social media is addictive and yes it is easy to get lost mindlessly scrolling but the important question to ask is why is your brain so exhausted and stressed that mindlessly scrolling is the only thing you really have the mental energy to do so much of the time?

Western society repeatedly slams through the narrative that social media addiction is the reason people are miserable and it is all a pathetic attempt to distract us from the fact that our lives suck because of actual horrible things like not being able to afford rent, being in endless debt, not being able to afford healthcare and any number of other awful stresses.

If you need to blob out and scroll after getting out of your shitty job that pays shit where you are treated like shit and sitting in shitty traffic on the way home for who knows how long that’s on society for only providing predatory options that abuse you.

For a lot of people the only thing they actually have the energy to do after work every night is mindlessly scroll, it is a grace that people at least have that to turn to even if it is predatory. It is a symptom not the core issue.

Twelve20two,

Also true. And there are plenty of worthwhile/educational things to be found on the apps that can help a bit more than they harm. But yeah, it being a symptom is spot on.

MySkinIsFallingOff,

I just discovered Lemmy, and I’m so happy about it. Instagram replaced Reddit for me these last five months, and I can really feel how detrimental it is for me. It’s like an ADHD-machine. No community, no discussion, just this as quick and loud phase as possible vibe. You look through one recipe video and you get recipes for several days. People dancing and dancing with huge smiles and these creepy eyes. Honestly it’s all so dystopian.

So keeping on with Instagram is not an option, going back to reddit is not an option - and I was really considering becoming like this person who is never in his phone, really mentally healthy, but wildly uninformed about the world and the general discussion 😅

The feel of this place with the Sync app is just so * chefs kiss *. Feels like what reddit was.

Mr_Fish, in Reality Shattered

Are you saying “some republican voters are good people” or “some republican politicians are good people”?

For the first one, that’s probably true but irrelevant. I think most republican voters are trying to do good with their vote, but they’ve got so caught up in Republican fascism that they honestly think voting red is good.

For the second one, I highly doubt it. They don’t have the cult behavior excuse, so at best, they’re completely selfish, enough to put their job security over the lives of others.

SuckMyWang,

I agree strongly with you. The problem is weak leadership from the republicans. The people are just along for the ride on the most part. If the politicians weren’t so spineless and scared of losing their own power they might actually stand up to the shit ones for what they believe in

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Then you shouldn’t just vote republican or democrat, but as an american. I don’t label myself as either one - but over the last several elections the choice has been obviously democrat because of the republicans trying to seize power so much. If they could modernize their platform at all I would think about voting for them - but they’re stuck in the 1950s.

So to cut power stop voting on party lines. Show that you’ll vote based on who has the best ideas, not a simple “I’ll always vote R”

Something funny I’ve seen is that in Norway it’s customary to distribute the income tax deduction over 11.5 months instead of 12, so that in November or December people only get deducted half the regular tax on their payslip. This is done to ensure that everyone has money for Christmas. It’s so dumb and beautiful that I can’t help but love the idea.

Imgonnatrythis,

Probably a decent economic stimulus, government probably does not end up taking much of a loss with this.

grue,

Government gets a gain from it – it gets its money sooner that way!

bardm,
@bardm@sh.itjust.works avatar

It’s actually only 10.5 months. There is no tax on your June payslip, that’s when most people get their vacation pay.

bstix,

Yes that’s also very common, but that’s a little more complicated. It’s only an option for people who have had the same job for more than a year and for those who agree on settling the entire holiday pay in June even if they don’t actually go on holiday then. It varies how people do it.

Unlike Norway, most EU countries tax the holiday on accrual so it’s always without a deduction when paid out regardless of when. Norway taxes it in the payment year though it is spread over the other months.

There are pros and cons to both ways. Personally I think that EU has the better one, not because of the taxation but because it’s not necessary to accrue holiday in advance.
