MisterBigFart, in Which sequels/prequels/spinoffs made the originals somehow worse?
@MisterBigFart@lemmy.world avatar

Austin Powers (2): The Spy Who Shagged Me. They immediately reveal that Vanessa was a fembot controlled by Doctor Evil, which completely retcons her character and role in the first movie.

Buddahriffic,

Can you really ruin a parody with a very parody way of following the Bond material where there’s a new love interest in every movie?

Like it was so illogical because she had plenty of opportunities to kill him in the first movie or even before she revealed herself in the second movie that it had to be taken as a joke. It’s been a while since I’ve seen the first movie, but doesn’t she even save him and play an important role in stopping Dr Evil?

WhipTheLlama, in Well, it was nice while it lasted?

Why would they have to keep up with their appraisal? There is no downside to not doing it, other than not being worth as much if they want to sell or IPO, but that would be true even without the equity firm’s investment and appraisal. No law says they have to meet the expectations set by a single investor. There is no legal duty requiring a company to maximize profits or shareholder value.

However, even if such a law requiring them to maximize profits existed, it’s very reasonable that they would legally continue making the same types of movies that earned them that value in the first place. There couldn’t possibly be a requirement for them to change business strategies, else every company would eventually all end up in the same, most profitable industry. They’d all be selling movie theatre popcorn or something.

InvertedParallax,

Because if they don’t the PE firm either cancels bonuses for sr management or fires them outright.

You can’t beat your boss.

Deftdrummer,

Laws? What the fuck are you talking about? You’re right in that their hand isn’t forced when making a business transaction such as this, but looking at it through the childish lens of “laws” is odd to say the least.

TheDorkfromYork, in Well, it was nice while it lasted?

I don’t understand A24. Hereditary was a borderline comedy, Uncut Gems and EEAAO would work better as 20 minute shorts, and nothing happened in The Witch. They’re like the Marvel of hipster movies.

Potatisen,

Lol, pretty good description.

NataliePortland,
@NataliePortland@lemmy.ca avatar

Sorry you didn’t appreciate them I loved those movies

TheDorkfromYork,

Little harm done. My tastes never seem to line up with the main stream, but I don’t shame anyone for loving Marvel or The Master of Disguise.

elbarto777,

Those movies are far from being obscure, but far from being mainstream as well.

But eh, in the end, it’s all entertainment.

Deftdrummer,

Sounds like you’ve watched all the superhero movies though so don’t get too cocky.

TheDorkfromYork,

I have no idea what you mean.

PsychedSy,

Uncut Gems and EEAAO felt too long at times but I think it was worth it in both cases.

For context, I prefer movies that are funny, have guns or lasers, or have magic or some shit. I have no taste when it comes to film.

TheDorkfromYork,

I love your honesty. I love Hardcore Henry but I’m not going to argue it’s a narrative wonder. It’s just my flavor of stupid insane.

PsychedSy,

Put Brad Pitt and people with funny accents in a movie and I’ll probably be glued to it.

If I want something fully engaging I read.

FenrirIII, in Milly Alcock has been cast as Supergirl in James Gunn's DC Universe!

Said Gunn at the time of that annoucement, “In our series we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

I thought they were veering away from the whole “dark and gritty” approach to DC. Really hope this isn’t a bad sign.

MimicJar,
@MimicJar@lemmy.world avatar

I mean he said the exact same thing a year ago variety.com/…/dc-universe-superman-legacy-batman-…

It’s just to call out that Supergirl is going to have lots of room to grow.

Basically the Superman film is going to have an established Superman, no origin story (although I’m sure sprinkled in). Supergirl is going to be more of an origin story (as I read it).

It will be the job of Superman to teach Supergirl who is coming from a very different background.

Remember the scene from Suicide Squad where the Ratcatcher father is telling Ratcatcher daughter about rats? Swap in Superman and Supergirl and change rats to humanity, boom. That’s the kind of wisdom Superman is going to be dishing out.

Pleaae dont post pictures of text. Link to it. Transcribe it. Its necessary for blind folks

CombatWombatEsq,

Sorry, I haven’t quite figured out how to set alt text on images when posting from my phone quite yet — the website is easy because the entry box allows markdown, but my mobile client doesn’t seem to have a box for it? I’m working on figuring it out. But my understanding is that, with good alt text, pictures of text are fine for blind folks?

Jesus fucking christ these comments.

MummifiedClient5000, in Suggestions for movies and TVseries that (attempt to) criticise the super rich?

Arrested Development

ClarkDoom, in "The Mandalorian & Grogu", a new Star Wars film directed by Jon Favreau, will enter the production phase later this year.

Sounds like a sad attempt on Disney’s part because they couldn’t come up with a fresh new movie and instead are cannibalizing characters that should be focused on the tv side of the company.

eightpix, in which movie has Danny trejo's best acting?
@eightpix@lemmy.world avatar

Heat. But that just may be the best film he was in.

Varyk,

Fair, thanks. I have an unpopular opinion about deniro and pacino though, so heat doesn’t crack my top (any number) in cinema.

I haven’t watched it in a decade though, so apparently I have to watch it again because everybody still talks about it 40 years later

Patariki, in Variety | Vin Diesel Sued for Alleged Sexual Battery of Assistant in 2010

I hate these kinds of news stories. It just promotes the guilty until proven innocent mindset.

RonnyZittledong, (edited ) in Letterboxd feels like vintage internet. Can it stay that way?
@RonnyZittledong@lemmy.world avatar

Most letterboxd “reviews” are just a worthless quip or meme. The lists can be pretty cool though.

unknowing8343,

I started to use it recently so I am not speaking for myself, but I have a friend who is a hardcore user that says that the key is that you must follow users who actually review content, and that it is specially interesting if these people have similar tastes to you. You can, for example, follow Martin Scorsese’s user and you’ll see his reviews.

koberulz,

Block those people. Follow reviewers who write more in-depth.

jordanlund, in Bradley Cooper is the latest director to ban chairs from his movie set. Some famed filmmakers also ban phones
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

Because not letting people sit down will definitely make them less tired…

simple, in Jackie Chan, Ralph Macchio Set For New ‘Karate Kid’ Movie

Well, at least Jaden Smith isn’t involved.

canthidium,
@canthidium@lemmy.world avatar

Haha, yes, definitely +1 for that.

nevernevermore,

Aww heck, I think Jaden and Willow are both pretty cool (their parents, not so much). Everybody has an akward teenage phase, his just couldn't be hidden because he's will smith's son.

jordanlund, in ‘Superman: Legacy’: Nicholas Hoult Lands Role Of Lex Luthor
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

He should be good in the role, but Jesus Christ do we need Lex Luthor AGAIN?

Supes has a deeper rogues gallery than Lex and Zod. Brainiac? Metallo? Parasite? Toyman? Bizarro? Mr. Mxyzptlk? Anyone?

Superman - Lex Luthor
Superman 2 - Zod / Lex Luthor
Superman 3 - Computer Science
Superman 4 - Lex Luthor / Nuclear Man
Superman Returns - Lex Luthor
Man of Steel - Zod
Batman v Superman - Lex Luthor / Batman / Doomsday
Justice League - Lex Luthor / Steppenwolf / Darkseid

CatOnLap, in [DISCUSSION] [SPOILERS] - The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes - Rachel Zegler, Tom Blyth, Viola Davis - Dir. by Francis Lawrence

I haven’t seen this, but I feel like no one asked for this movie.

InfiniWheel,

I just straight up watch pitch meetings directly now instead of watching the actual show/movie, except if it really catches my eye

c0mbatbag3l,
@c0mbatbag3l@lemmy.world avatar

I wonder if Suzanne Collins was like “do you think they’ll know I ripped off GoT on the naming convention?”

MimicJar,
@MimicJar@lemmy.world avatar

It terms of movies I never asked for, at least this film has plenty to work with. The original series/films establish that we’re at Hunger Games 74+ and there was a huge war.

I’m not sure if Snow is the best main character, but having watched the film I think he was a good enough choice.

A prequel is always going to be a difficult movie, but I thought this did a fine job. If they want to make a few more I’ll probably watch them, but if they don’t I’ll be ok.
