Movies, sadly not much atm. Been watching shows and youtube reactions whilst travelling. That said, I’ve seen fresh reactions to greats such as Who Framed Roger Rabbit and 28 Days Later.
I’m going to see, “Priscilla” by Sofia Coppola soon.
I enjoyed, “killers of the flower moon” by Scorsese and didn’t mind the length. It was a hot day outside so I appreciated the nearly 4 hours of air conditioning for the same price as 2 hours of AC. The story was good too.
Trick R Treat is a Halloween Classic, watch that if you haven’t
Gonna recommend some slower artsy horror films that I really enjoyed but aren’t for everyone. If you enjoyed the movies like The VVitch and Hereditary they may be right up your ally.
-A Dark Song (Slow Burn Occult Horror inspired by an actual ritual done by Alester Crowley)
-The Endless (Low-budget Cosmic Horror story about two brothers returning to the UFO cult they escaped from as children)
-Annihilation (Cosmic Horror. A team of female Scientist must cross a growing barrier which allows no people or communication to escape.)
-Men (Folk Horror. A traumatized woman retreats to a quiet English village but finds herself tormented by its inhabitants.)
-The Empty Man (Based on a graphic novel, sort of a mix of a Slasher and Cosmic Horror. A bit overlong and needed to be edited, but enjoyable none-the-less)
-Suspiria (Both the original and the 2016 remake, they are best enjoyed together as the remake compliments the original rather well. A young American woman enrolls in a prestigious German dance school where not everything is as it seems)
-His House (A refugee family flees to the UK. Can they escape the ghosts and trauma of their past while attempting to adjust to their new life?)
-Amulet (Another topical horror film involving refugees in the UK. An ex-soldier moves in to a new flat occupied by a woman and her ill mother where he is tormented by ghost past and present.)
-The Blackcoats Daughter (Slow Burn Religious Horror. Two girls are left alone at a Catholic boarding school over winter break when one of them begins to exhibit unsettling behavior)
The same duo behind The Endless and Resolution released a film on Netflix called Synchronic that also has ties to the other two. Personally I found it to be the weakest of the trilogy but it was worth watching. Its much more accessible to mainstream audiences and is more a sci-fi thriller then horror.
I just finally watched both Terrifiers and they are…something, lol. Art the Clown could be a classic like other slashers soon. Hope they can increase the budget and work on acting and story a little more for the next one.
lol I honestly hate clowns, but Art is my favorite. The moment I saw him in All Hallows Eve I did research and found out there was a movie about him and I loved it. The second one way good, but I hate the way he was defeated lol
They are working on a 3rd too I hope they don’t go overboard and kill his legacy lol
Threads (1984 BBC tv movie banned from rebroadcast for 40 years due to being too horrifying). It’s about the death of hope, and how all that remains after is to hope for death.
Edit: I’ve seen it once. That was enough, I never want to see it again.
So, I went into this film expecting a total B-movie cash grab that might have been too late in the works to be relevant. I can say that I was pleasantly surprised that they did put some actual effort into the production, which was great to see.
I didn’t dislike the film, but I feel like there was more of a story they were trying to tell but it was getting pulled in a lot of directions all at one. The horror scenes with the animatronics really fought for screen time that was pretty heavy already with dialogue and exposition. I could see the potential for a really good film buried deep within though. I really wanted them to tease out more information about Garrett’s kidnapper and possibly delve deeper into the idea that Mike was a substance abuser losing his grip on reality. He spent his waking hours suspecting random strangers of being child abductors and his resting hours in a pill-induced stupor obsessing over the same dream again and again. Would have been neat to explore that in relation to the events at Freddy’s.
I saw Vanessa the cop as both a necessary supporting character to do exposition dumps, but also a pointless side character who never seemed to explain or justify the reason why she was in the scene, and Mike never questioned why she was there either. I actually thought that the plot twist at the end was going to be that Vanessa was the kidnapper and Mike couldn’t see her for what she was despite his hypervigilance because he was blinded by his preconceived notions that Mike must have been kidnapped by a man, despite the kidnapper never explicitly being shown in the dream.
The acting at times wasn’t spectacular, but passable. Maybe it was intentional that some people seemed to be “playing a role” given the reveal at the end? Josh Hutcherson and Piper Rubio did great in their roles, but everyone else came across as either phoning it in or just generally being too corny for the camera.
Overall, it was worth the watch, but don’t expect it to scare your pants off. It’s a pretty tame movie that fans of the game will definitely enjoy.
Watched Renfield (2023) last night. Found it to be a bit of fun, but felt like it under delivered.
I love the premise of a disillusioned Renfield trying to take his life back from Dracula. Unfortunately, that core struggle gets lost amid a world domination plot, an absurdly well armed criminal empire, corrupt cops, a dead dad sibling justice vengeance tale, and a romance that is basically microwaved Warm Bodies (which was lukewarm on arrival to begin with!).
Idk. The more I think about it, the more disappointed I am. Some of the action set pieces are fun, and occasionally there’s a bit of effects work that grabs your attention. 2/4 stars.
Yep, agreed completely. The premise is interesting and Cage is actually pretty good without being too over the top but the rest is tonally all over the place. It tries to be serious and then Jean Ralphio comes in and is a cartoon. I left pretty disappointed at the potential.
I love Ben Schwartz. I even saw him and Thomas Middleditch do their improv show a couple years ago. But I always see Jean Ralphio when I see him. It’s just such a good character, lol.
Oh yeah, don’t get me wrong, I’ve got nothing against the guy, it’s just that his character arc was half baked. In theory, the secondary antagonist being a snivelly little weasel who falls for Dracula’s power as a mirror of Renfield is a fine enough concept, but, much like the other interesting ideas they had, it’s just tossed off without much of a care for exploring it.
I just think the whole script should have gone through a streamlining process. First, ditch the cop love interest It really muddies the waters on what the film is trying to say about co-dependency when the main character is rescued from their codependent relationship by, let me check my notes, getting into a relationship. Second, make the bad guys actually threatening. They tried by giving them a 3rd act level up, but it still felt like no one was challenged in the slightest. Finally, show me more of Dracula and Renfield interacting! Their relationship is the entire crux of this movie, but they only have a handful of scenes together. Which is a damn shame, because I think Hoult and Cage actually lean into the manipulative dynamic there really really well. The idea just needed to be driven home.
Between The Last Voyage of the Demeter and this, it’s been a disappointing year for Dracula movies.
