bartolomeo, in Many hostages released by Hamas still being treated for trauma
@bartolomeo@suppo.fi avatar

It’s great that these people are receiving treatment, not only because it’s the right thing to do but also so that the world gets an accurate idea of how much damage is actually being done and what kind of resources will be needed to heal from this war and occupation.

The trauma experienced by hundreds of thousands of children and their parents in Gaza will also have long-term debilitating effects, psychiatrists and psychologists have warned, particularly as there are no therapeutic facilities left. Few of Gaza’s hospitals are functioning any more, even for operating on the severely injured.

There are also thousands of examples in the West Bank, especially with warrantless entries to Palestinian homes (most often done at night to instill more fear and suffering from sleep deprivation onto the Palestinians) and indefinite incarceration without charge, sometimes subject to torture.

Those photos are so harrowing 🙄 Meanwhile, the Guantanamo Bay detention camp and other American black sites are still open, and an actual genocide is happening in Palestine with American material & political support.

The Uyghur genocide has already been debunked several times over, but go on Guardian.

Sure.

DragonTypeWyvern,

Weird that these deniers don’t just go straight to the CIA saying it’s not genocide.

Of course, the CIA does lie professionally, and isn’t exactly known for being anti-genocide.

noctisatrae,

This seems kinda fishy :((

Great whataboutism, tankie scum. No shit the US does some truly fucked up shit. Nobody realistically thinks their government is a paragon of virtue. Just that the Chinese government does fucked up shit as well. Both can be true, bootlicker.

tardigrada, in The Great China Unwind: Foreign Investors Pull $29B Out Of Chinese Equity Markets In 2023 despite the People’s Bank's efforts at making China an attractive opportunity for foreign investment

To provide context to the article: There is a proven dynamic relationship between trade openness, foreign direct investment, and industrial economic growth within economies, and this is true also for China. There is strong evidence for this (for example, see here).

A significant portion of China’s GDP depends on foreign direct investments, and the Gini coefficient, a metric for economic inequity, is 0.45 in China (for comparison, in most European countries it is between 0.3 and 0.35). It is commonly said that any Gini above 0.4 bears a high risk for social unrest.

zhunk,

Gini above 0.4 bears a high risk for social unrest

The US in 2022 has a GINI of 0.488. Not great.

tardigrada, (edited )

I don’t know how whataboutism helps China or anyone else, but there are several countries with high degrees of inequality. You should also provide a source for your data. Gini coefficient for US

zhunk, (edited )

Source

I didn’t mean it as whataboutism to justify China’s situation, just as a tangent about the US also having work to do. I agree, now that you said it, that it looks like whataboutism.

Hopefully the drop in the US over the past two years turns into a longer trend.

t3rmit3,

It’s going to be very difficult for China to attract money when other countries with less authoritarian practices are stepping into spaces that China previously dominated, and China really cannot afford to lose that money and those jobs.

They’re just waiting around until China and Russia tells them they need the extra distraction. If NK starts attacking Japan/SK, expect China to follow with a Taiwan invasion shortly after.

gregorum, (edited ) in North Korea ramps up preparations for war with US

why? we basically ignore them most of the time. is that enough for them to declare war on us?

NK has spent years whipping up an imaginary fervor over, essentially, not liking the US as a pretext for some war they wish to fight. that’s it.

scytale,

Probably want more aid. Don’t they (Kim and his government) usually start throwing a tantrum when they want some attention and aid?

gregorum, (edited )

Currently, they’re giving Russia a ton of military aid. I don’t hear them asking for anything.

perhaps they’re still angry about Dennis Rodman pooing all over their nice hotel?

I’m not an expert in Polish politics, but Tusk is the sort of PM where, yeah. Anything left over from the old regime where there’s still some power left is going to lead directly here.

There’s a lot that needs sorted, and Duda is going to try to fuck things up as much as possible.

BubsyFanboy, in Polish government puts public media into liquidation amid dispute with president
@BubsyFanboy@szmer.info avatar

Before you comment, this is the full announcement:

Announcement of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage

Due to the decision of the President of the Republic of Poland to suspend financing of public media, I decided to put into liquidation the companies Telewizja Polska S.A. and Polskie Radio S.A. and Polish Press Agency S.A.

In the current situation, such action will ensure the continued operation of these companies, carry out the necessary restructuring and prevent layoffs of employees in the above-mentioned companies. companies employees due to lack of financing.

The state of liquidation may be withdrawn at any time by the owner.

Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz Minister of Culture and National Heritage

And now some context from the article:

Today, Duda proposed his own alternative bill that would have maintained other government spending in the budget – such as the public sector pay rises – but did not include the funds for public media.

However, this morning, the speaker of parliament, Szymon Hołownia, who is one of the leaders of the new ruling coalition, said that he would not convene an early sitting of the house to discuss the president’s proposal, as Duda had requested.

This afternoon, before Sienkiewicz’s decision was published, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that the cabinet had decided that the 3 billion zloty previously earmarked for public media would instead be spent on cancer treatment and mental healthcare for children.

Tusk added that Duda’s veto had forced the culture minister to make certain decisions, which would be done “calmly and rationally”.

However, Sienkiewicz’s decision was condemned by figures linked to PiS and to the former management of public media. Samuel Pereira, a senior editor at TVP under PiS, said that the “usurpers are trying to bypass the National Court Register” – the body responsible for validating Sinkiewicz’s previous decision.

Shortly afterwards, President Duda’s chief of staff, Marcin Mastalerek, published a statement declaring the decision to put public media into liquidation as “an admission of defeat by the government”.

S_204, in Sold to Salafism: The millions for which Golf-pro Jon Rahm sold himself to Saudi Arabia hide tortured citizens, executed minors, women sentenced to perpetual confinement, and enslaved foreign workers

Interesting how the Saudi export of their religion is a problem but you’ve got people in the streets cheering for Hamas who is just as brutal if not worse in their upholding of their interpretation of Islamic laws. One’s certainly more subtle than attacking and killing a bunch of civilians but both are troublesome for Western democractic ideals.

Iran and Qatari investments are paying off . Better than the investment in a golf league… y’know, if you don’t value human life that is.
