Rentlar, in Prices soar in Argentina after Milei’s currency devaluation

You thought having a leftist as leader was bad, Argentina, good luck dealing with this douche in power.

detalferous, in Prices soar in Argentina after Milei’s currency devaluation

What does he say this achieves? What is his endgame with respect to the devaluation?

gatelike,

apparently abolishing the central bank and switching to the dollar

statist43,

So having US cemtral bank controlling the own currency.

Very well tgought through

If they dump their currency and use USD, then as long as there arnough dollars around it solves inflation right? (Their economy is a blip to the Goliath that is USD)

But if that’s the case, then their currency is useless as everyone knows if will have zero value at all in a few months/years.

It does mean they can’t print money to get out of trouble though… Not that that was going well for them before.

TWeaK, in China is flooding Taiwan with fake news and disinformation ahead of a major election. Here’s how it’s fighting back

You should use the original link as the post link, then lemmy will automatically reference the cross-posts (also the cross-post link will be instance agnostic so it won’t pull people out of their local instance).

If you edit the post it should sort itself out.

0x815,

Thanks, didn’t know that. It’s corrected now.

jarfil,

Hm, could you explain how is that supposed to work in more detail? I still see the cross post link as taking me to the other instance; furthermore, even the share link and “open in browser” in Liftoff are taking me out of the instance 🤔

TWeaK,

I think maybe not all apps show the automated cross-post link - I’m not seeing it right now on Jerboa. But yeah I think basically your instance checks the link against all other links it has (both local communities and federated) then it just adds cross-post links for each one, as well as a link to the new post in the old posts.

detalferous, in Prices soar in Argentina after Milei’s currency devaluation

That’s helpful, but why declare a 50% devaluation? Isn’t that just determined once you peg to the dollar and float your currency?

jarfil, (edited )

Yearly inflation for December 2023 has been 160% (stuff that used to cost 100, now costs 260)

A 50% devaluation, is the same as a 100% inflation: stuff that used to cost 100, now costs 200.

Milei has promised a reduction in inflation for the next year, from the 160% to just 60% (stuff that used to cost 100, plus through the 50% devaluation now costs 200, will end up costing just another 60% more, or 320 “160”).

Meaning: instead of having to anounce a 220% inflation for 2024, he’s split it into “50% devaluation, plus 60% inflation”.

…see? He promised to reduce inflation, and he did! 🎉🤡 /s

So they’re like Fox News?

derbis, (edited ) in China is flooding Taiwan with fake news and disinformation ahead of a major election. Here’s how it’s fighting back

Hrm, so… There is a chat bot installed in Line that monitors all incoming messages and inserts itself when it it’s triggered by something said in a private conversation?

As much as I want disinformation fought I’m extremely wary of this approach.

@skullgiver@popplesburger.hilciferous.nl avatar

It looks like it’s just a bot you have to invite into your chat: checkcheck.me/en/

This isn’t like Discord’s Clyde that sometimes just pops up to put the app’s internal messages into a conversation style chat, this is a chatbot by an independent company.

I don’t think I’d want this bot to listen in on DMs, but this doesn’t seem all that harmful in most group chats I participate in.

derbis,

Ah, that’s rather better if it’s voluntary.

WatDabney, in Israel-Gaza war live: Israeli hostages mistakenly killed by IDF in Gaza were holding makeshift white flag, official says

Just makes me wonder how many Palestinians they’ve murdered in similar circumstances, and we just didn’t hear about it because they weren’t Israelis, so it was treated as if it didn’t matter.

Devi,

I mean, the answer is loads. There was a hospital where they had to move all patients away from the outer rooms because the Israeli army were using snipers to pick off staff who came to attend to them. Uniformed doctors who were engaged in treating their patients were shot with no warning.

gregorum, in Israel-Gaza war live: Israeli hostages mistakenly killed by IDF in Gaza were holding makeshift white flag, official says

Oh, this just keeps getting better and better

Nacktmull, in Israel-Gaza war live: Israeli hostages mistakenly killed by IDF in Gaza were holding makeshift white flag, official says

Does the fact that they held a white flag not rule out a “mistake”?

socphoenix,

You know someone will state that a “common Hamas tactic” any minute now

socphoenix,

Well didn’t take long just found this in a different post…

Unaware7013,

Wow, I like the one guy farther down who claims Likud is awful but it's Hamas propaganda that the IDF kills kids.... like the massive dead civilian and kid numbers are just all propaganda to make a genocidal ethnistate look bad.

nhgeek, in Putin: Russia will concentrate more military units near Finland

I agree with the OP on this. Tie them up defending against an attack that will never happen. NATO is a defensive alliance.

t3rmit3, in Putin: Russia will concentrate more military units near Finland

It’s absolutely hilarious that Putin is still pretending he has any ability to counter NATO militarily outside of nukes.

Russia is estimated to have lost 87% of their pre-war soldiers and 60% of their pre-war armor.

The drafts already drove a massive exodus of their future workforce (estimated at 700k by Forbes Russia, which is around 0.5%, which is a LOT) to flee Russia.

Their ground force modernization (equipment, training, stockpiles, etc) is estimated to have been set back by 15 years (same cnn link above).

If Russia didn’t have nukes, they’d pose almost no threat to NATO. Well on their way to being another North Korea.

sqgl,

Hopefully there is a backroom deal for him to relocate resources to the Finnish border and heroically stop the “planned” NATO invasion of Russia.

That way he gets to fail in Ukraine while saving face.

So they are bringing back what is left of the units they moved to Ukraine?
