Kwakigra, in IDF evidence so far falls well short of al-Shifa hospital being Hamas HQ

Watching those newborns suffocate to death on a table over the course of the day was something I’m never going to forget. If the IDF thinks they can move past this without a lot of scrutiny, I hope they’re dead wrong.

Devi,

That really got me too. How can you kill brand new babies and then be like “We’re in the right here”

0x815, (edited ) in Israel-Hamas War: Israeli Army Takes Journalists on Controlled Visit to Gaza Hospital

It reads strange if the Israelian military takes journalists on a “controlled” visit given the Israeli government’s sentiment towards journalists, when they NOT control them. Just a remainder here or here or here.

memfree,

They will tell you “controlled” visits are for safety, but I remember in the post 9-11 Gulf War reporting how the Pentagon went all in for “embedded journalism”. Yeah, sure, it keeps the press ‘safe’, but it changes what gets covered. The media initially loved it, but later realized there were valid criticisms of the process.

More to the point: yeah, covering news should not be a death sentence. Even if you are covering a war, as civilian non-combatants you shouldn’t be targeted by any military… a la the ‘Collateral Murder’ wikileaks video of journalists shot by US helicopters.

The Iranian government should also be on the hook for a rebuild.

Colorcodedresistor, in Commentary: We face a world potentially running out of antibiotics

  • BumbleBeeBleep,

    “Running out” is a bit of a weird title here, it doesn’t mean that some deposit is running dry. There are more and more bacteria getting resistant for more and more types of antibiotics, making them no longer effective. Even a bottomless supply of antibiotics is useless if it doesn’t actually kill the things it’s supposed to kill.

    I suppose the “running out” part would mean that there are only so many types of antibiotics, if none of them are effective anymore (or not enough of them are effective enough) we would be in some deep shit.

    (being in deep shit may cause a severe risk of bacterial infection, I highly recommend not being in such a situation)

    HurlingDurling,

    So this has been reported for years now. We aren’t running out of antibiotics. We are running out of options like you said. The real reason is that doctors would prescribe stronger antibiotics than were needed. Also, people would stop taking the full course because they felt better before then, and lastly, farms give antibiotics to their animals just in case, so any bacteria that would survive any of these is allowed to reproduce and become resistant to antibiotics.

    cosmic_skillet, in New Delhi smog grows more intense as farm fires rage

    Come on guys, we can do this

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biochar_carbon_removal

    Chinzon,

    There’s a lot we can do in labs, the snag is often when you try to bring it to scale. Regardless, doing this is like trying to clean your lungs while still smoking

    cosmic_skillet,

    Yeah it’s a huge effort to do large scale biochar production. The dream is to take all those waste stems they’re burning and sequester the carbon in the soil. This will improve soil quality and improve air quality by stopping the burning, but it will cost big bucks.

    @livus@kbin.social avatar

    There were more than 2,500 farm fires in Punjab state on Wednesday, north of Delhi, as farmers defied a Supreme Court-ordered ban on crop residue burning and the local police warned of legal action against them, The Indian Express newspaper reported.

    This is a really intractable problem. I don't know what they are going to do.

    That air quality is going to cost lives.

    tesseract,

    It does. Imagine people with Asthma or COPD. Their deaths are not going to be attributed to pollution.

    @livus@kbin.social avatar

    Exactly. Fires like these can probably give people COPD.

    Hope the fires stop soon

    tesseract,

    This isn’t a wild fire. This is intentionally done by farmers to prepare their land for the next crop. The farmers know that the smoke is choking and killing people in Delhi. But they don’t care because the winds carry the smoke away from them. There is a ban imposed by the courts against this. And they still don’t care.

    bleistift2, in New Delhi smog grows more intense as farm fires rage

    Fire makes smoke.

    Original: Netanyahu Calls Palestinians ‘Collateral Damage’ As Israel Destroys Gaza Post title: Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu says Palestinian civilians being killed en masse are simply “collateral damage”

    The revised title reads as Netanyahu using the world simply, which doesn’t appear to be the case in the article.
