dumdum666, in Top UN official in New York steps down citing ‘genocide’ of Palestinian civilians

He steps down because of his Retirement - not because of the Hamas - Israel war. Suggesting otherwise, is Disinformation.

bedrooms,

Yes I agree it's misleading (and I'm OP). The first paragraph especially.

prole,

“Retiring” and “resigning” are different things. He may have been near retirement age, but the statement he made makes it clear this was a resignation for a cause. With a good reason.

dumdum666,

Quit framing the war as the cause. From the article:

A spokesperson for the UN in New York sent the Guardian a statement about Mokhiber, saying: “I can confirm that he is retiring today. He informed the UN in March 2023 of his upcoming retirement, which takes effect tomorrow. The views in his letter made public today are his personal views.”

So he informed the UN in March 2023 that he wanted to step down and now he did it.

prole, (edited )

So the letter was just for funsies? Seems like he was planning on retiring soon, and that date was moved up for reasons outlined in his letter.

Unaware7013, in ‘Children were carrying other injured children.’ Witness describes aftermath of Israeli strike on Gaza refugee camp | CNN

An Israeli strike targeting a Hamas commander in the densely populated Jabalya refugee camp in northern Gaza has left catastrophic damage and killed a large number of people, according to eyewitnesses and medics in the enclave.

Israel is a terrorist state, and they're so blood thirsty for Hamas commanders that they're bombing fucking refuge camps.

And they wonder what drives support for Hamas? Jk, no they don't. Israel knowsthey support Hamas because of Israel's actions, and Israel leans into it to give them excuses to marginalize and remove Palestinians from their land one way or another.

I don't support Hamas, but supporting Israel is unconcionable, and has been for years. But with so many things these days, the authorizations are going full mask off...

ihavenopeopleskills,
@ihavenopeopleskills@kbin.social avatar

Despite the fact that Hamas hides amongst innocent civilians?

Unaware7013,

Absolutely. Punishing the civilians they're hiding amongst us a literal war crime (collective punishment), and I refuse to support a state that's trying to ethnicly cleanse a neighboring state so they can steal land.

Also, a commander being there is a fucking weak excuse to bomb a fucking refugee camp. No matter what you think of the war, it should be unconscionable to target a camp of people who's lives you've already destroyed, but considering the end goal of Israel, I'm not surprised they'd stoop that low.

bedrooms, (edited ) in Top Trump allies facing charges lose lawyers after failing to pay legal bills

At this point I suspect it's a new scam. These people are clearly deliberately not paying their lawyers. Once the lawyers are done, they move on to new ones.

I'm wondering whether the lawyers are complicit – I guess not. But I honestly have no idea whether Trump & co. are generating profits through this scheme.

Edit: so, one way to establish a scam in this way is for the lawyers to demonstrate how they'd defend other conservatives. By defending people around Trump, these lawyers, for example, might be introduced to potential conservative clients. When they find enough clients they call it a day, and cancel the contract with the powerful people who don't pay them.

sqgl,

So maybe they are only performing token work at the moment? Handing in documents late, not bothering to read evidence etc

That is brilliant actually.

Most lawyers do the minimum work possible anyhow in my experience — have ditched four so far.

The very first one failed to write the letter he promised and yet billed me for our one hour meeting (where he failed to disclose costs). I naively thought he was an anomaly. I did win my case with my fifth lawyer eventually.

JillyB,

Wouldn’t the lawyers just do it pro bono if it was a marketing thing?

sqgl,

No, they would then look bad for pulling out. This way it looks reasonable to pull out.

Hirom, in Top Trump allies facing charges lose lawyers after failing to pay legal bills

Posting this on c/usnews should be enough.

sqgl,

Sorry, am new. I saw this other relatively trivial Trump post approved here so I thought it was OK.

I won’t leave it to the mods. Will police myself in future.

Hirom,

Mods appears to be flexible with rule and take gentler approach when it’s not abuse. That’s a good approach.

The line can be blurry between US News that’s relevant at the local/national level and fit better within c/usnews, and relevant globally and may fit better in c/worldnews readers. Here I’d argue it’s the former.

sqgl,

I put it in both this time. There is so little content on Lemmy. Still early days. Why c/ prefix? c for community? (vs r for Reddit)

Hirom, in Paris police shoot woman at station after threats

Reuters reports the women shouted ‘You’re all going to die’ in a metro station and was threatening, quoting the prosecutor.

www.msn.com/en-gb/news/world/…/ar-AA1j9SMo

The investigation and video recording will be important to verify this.

If the reporting is accurate, police shot an unarmed women believing she was going to blow herself up. It might be an attempt at suicide by cop.

If it’s inaccurate it might be a tragic police blunder.

Steve Bannon, Rudy Giuliani and Mike Lindell

So, anyway, y'all do anything fun for Halloween?

MagicShel,

I dressed up as Darth Vader and took my kids out. It was popular. I had several kids assure me they were on the side of the Empire. Then when they got past me, they were like, “I’m really a Jedi,” and run away. It was a good time other than I was completely blind. I couldn’t have chased those little younglings down if I’d wanted.

Anyway what were we talking about? Broke dipshits who chose irrelevance when they had the option of being rich and silent? Meh.

blindsight,

lol, that’s amazing. I’m imagining you with a deep voice… “ARE YOU WITH THE EMPIRE OR REBEL SCUM?!”

God damn, I refreshed my donation to UNICEF and am hoping other people follow suit.

kittenroar, in "It breaks my heart to see children around me strive for a cup of clean water and cannot find it:" Gaza has become a graveyard for thousands of children, Unicef says

It makes me feel sick that Biden is sending more money to Israel, with no conditions, knowing that all of that money will be used for genocide.

It’s also upsetting (but not surprising) to see so many Israel apologists on social media.

t3rmit3, in "When an eight-year-old tells you that she doesn’t want to die, it’s hard not to feel helpless:" toll of Israel-Palestine crisis on children ‘beyond devastating’, UN says

The media will literally wring their hands until this genocide is over, because as we’re all finding out, no one is willing to stand up to the US or China just to save some poor Palestinians or Uyghurs from being ‘displaced’ (from life).

unicef has been pleading for humanitarian aid to Gaza long before the hamas attack. It's not a fresh hell, it's been like this for a long time.

TinyPizza, in "It breaks my heart to see children around me strive for a cup of clean water and cannot find it:" Gaza has become a graveyard for thousands of children, Unicef says
@TinyPizza@kbin.social avatar

from the article

And then there is the trauma. When the fighting stops, the cost to children and their communities will be borne out for generations to come. Before this latest escalation, more than 800,000 children in Gaza – three quarters of its entire child population – were identified as needing mental health and psychosocial support. That’s before this latest nightmare.

1,000,000 children are being denied a livable present and future. The clock is ticking. Please call your local representatives.

TexMexBazooka,

They don’t care. Never have.

Domiku,

Call anyway! If they don’t feel pressure from their electorate, then they definitely won’t change their stances.

Machinist3359,

I agree, but it takes less than 10 min and is more impactful than lemmy posts

awww cry me a fucking river

Gaza was given to Arabs for self rule and determination in 2005, all Jews left Gaza, even Jewish graveyards were dug up and moved, it was theirs to do with as they liked.

They've spent the last 18 years making into a terrorist Disneyland with a dozen Islamofascist terrorist organizations with the stated goal of killing Jews and destroying the state of Israel, they've fired hundreds of thousands of missiles into Israel indiscriminately targeting civilians, and launched countless cross borders attacks against Jewish civilians, including one that caused the largest loss of Jewish life in any single day, anywhere, since the Holocaust on October 7th.

They were given Gaza to live in freedom and self determination, they used it to kill Jews. They were warned. They chose to ignore the warnings.

These acts of terrorism were perpetrated by the entire Gazan community, they voted for Hamas, and allowed Hamas to rule their government for the last 17 years, Hamas and all the other Islamic terrorists in Gaza are not outsiders, they were born in Gaza of Gazans, they were raised in Gaza, they were educated in Gaza, they married and had children of their own in Gaza, their Parents, teachers, mosques, hospitals, are all in Gaza, from which they use to hid and store weapons to attack Jews, Hamas, PIJ and all the other Islamic terrorist in Gaza ARE Gaza, there has been no uprising in Gaza, there have only been attacks on Israel. This is what Gazans have supported and sacrificed for in every way they possibly could.

And now it's here. I do hope they enjoy what they've worked generationaly to achieve. There will be no ceasefire this time.

    Krono,

That’s a lot of words to say you support genocide.

This is an article about dead children, it’s rather shocking to see such bloodthirst in the comments.

Like I said last time I saw them copy and post this same rant on an article about children, they are basically functioning as a troll.

    krellor,

Dude, no matter how you feel about the actions of Hamas and other violent groups, empathy for the children impacted by war and violence is a sign of basic humanity. Telling children to cry you a river is just sick.
