Right now, yes. Some servers are already running 1 version higher, havenā€™t tried connecting to them yet. You can also play on Community servers, just check the left part of the screen for the button, Iā€™ve had better latency on them.

And yet, they got 13 million new subscribers last 3 months

D61,

Does Netflix still do the ā€œfree trial periodā€ and ā€œget free months if a friend sent youā€ thing?

Are there any numbers about how many unsubscribers to compare to the subscribers? Thatā€™d be a juicy number.

baseless_discourse,

Why canā€™t people live without Netflix? Donā€™t they have a job, a family, OR a hobby?

I am honestly confusedā€¦

Movies and TV are some peoplesā€™ hobbies. I have a co-worker who used to spend $300/mo on a cable bill because she had all the movie channels and stuff. She watched tons of movies and shows. At first I thought she was weird for watching so much TV, but then I thought about how much gaming I do, and realized ā€œOh, thatā€™s just her hobby like gaming is mine.ā€ Granted, Iā€™m not spending $300/mo on gaming, but people do tend to spend money on hobbies. Sometimes even more than $300/mo.

Anyway, Iā€™ve been letting her use my Netflix account ā€“ surprisingly neither of us have seen anything from Netflix about it ā€“ for the last several years. She recently (finally) got a Smart TV so she cancelled her crazy-ass cable package and I think pays for YouTube TV now. Iā€™m sure sheā€™s watching just as much as TV and movies as ever, but at least sheā€™s saving some money.

baseless_discourse, (edited )

Uh that makes sense. I guess my original comment is more out of jealousy: I have so many movies that I want to watch, but I have never find the time and energy to do so. After work, dinner, chat, duolingo, and lunch prep for my wife, I barely find any time during my night, and it is kind of frustrating for me.

Last year, I have only finished like less than 5 from like 50 titles.

I am glad people are enjoying their hobby. I personally would not be on Netflix anymore as most of the movie I want to watch is not on there, but I can now kind of see it might be worth it for others.

It also surprises me that this large amount of the population takes movie and TV as a hobby.

JCPhoenix,
@JCPhoenix@beehaw.org avatar

Gotcha, apologies for the misread!

Honestly, I was surprised too. I guess given how ubiquitous movies and television are, it never really occurred to me that it could be a hobby. And I bet most people donā€™t think of it as a hobby, either. When I think of a hobby related to TV/Movies, I think more like ā€œfilm snobsā€ (for lack of a better term). Maybe people who watch the AFI 100 or whatever and know all about film and cinematography. But not people just watching TV like anyone else. But by definition, itā€™s a hobby. Itā€™s ā€œa pursuit outside oneā€™s regular occupation engaged in especially for relaxation.ā€

For my coworker, sheā€™s single and childless. So she has tons of time to watch movies and shows outside of work. Iā€™m the same, but I devote it mainly towards gaming. Though I could certainly stand to devote less time to my hobby. Or pick up some new ones at least!

Hope youā€™ll be able to find some more time to watch the movies and show you want!

diyrebel, (edited )

You might let her know that she can borrow DVDs from the public library at no cost. Another little-known gratis option is freesat and terrestrial broadcast. I recently started using MythTV as a PVR to record broadcast TV and was pleasantly surprised to find no commercial interruptions (but if there are commercials in her region, MythTV can cut them out).

The people who are stealing our movies and our television shows and operating piracy sites are not mom and pop operations,ā€ says Charlie Rivkin, chief executive officer of the MPA, who adds that some of the operators also engage in drug trafficking, child pornography, prostitution and money laundering. ā€œThis is organized crime.ā€

I like how they always have to fabricate a connection to organized crime. Trying to convince the reader that is not just copyright infringement.

Itā€™s projection.

Hollywood was founded on IP theft of European filmmakersā€™ work and funded by various mobs, which then went on to lobby (bribe) politicians into changing certain regulations on gambling in AZ, et al, to pave the way for Vegas and the like.

Fuck Hollywood with a rusty pineapple sideways.

The same way I havenā€™t seen an ad in years, I also use a paywall bypass extension.

So I guess it skips my mind sometimes; when none of these sites have had paywalls for years.

I would argue a good chunk of the people here would prefer the OG link so they can archive it themselves (or make an offline .html copy directly)

ziixe,
@ziixe@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Could you possibly share the extension? Asking for a friend

hypoproteinosis96,

I am 100% unaffiliated w/ OP, but I would guess they use Magnoliaā€™s bypass.

However; I am on v3.0.8.0 (2023-03-05), so I canā€™t speak for anything newer than that out of his/her repo or in the extension mentioned.

A fun reminder: always read what your extensions can do before yolo-clicking a download by a burner account.

JokeDeity,

I just spent like an hour trying several methods to install this on Android, sadly I was not successful. If anyone can inform me on how to install this on Firefox for Android (not a fork), please let me know.

I didnā€™t mind the small increase to 11.99, but the way theyā€™re doing this just rubs me the wrong way.

Theyā€™re not only increasing the sub price, but tinkering with the display quality too AND laying people offā€¦ Netflix just doesnā€™t deserve my cash when I can access most of this content via other means.

I got rid of a bunch of subs at the beginning of the year, getting rid of NF too.

harry_balzac,

I had Netflix and Hulu about 10 years ago and it was worth it. Then I dropped Netflix and got Prime. Dropped Prime and Hulu then did Disney+ bundleā€¦that was good but now I sail the seas with friends. So much better. So many movies and shows I would have missed out on.

rtxn,

I never had Netflix. Or any streaming subscription. I considered it once, several years ago, but I couldnā€™t justify it at prices then, and I sure as shit wonā€™t waste my money now. Iā€™ll help them save their bandwidth.

So Hollywood copyright lawyers will target illegal subscription services rather than individual downloaders? Fine by me.

I can understand paying for a legal streaming service where at least a tiny percentage of profits goes into producing new material. I pirate out of convenience and availability, because movies and series arenā€™t released immediately in my region.

Paying somebody for streaming film and TV shows that they have no hand in producing, and thus not supporting new productions ā€” same as I can download for free myself? ā€” that makes no sense to me.

jagoan,

Paying somebody for streaming film and TV shows that they have no hand in producing, and thus not supporting new productions ā€” same as I can download for free myself? ā€” that makes no sense to me

It makes sense for me. The one iā€™m using is $20 per year. I just think of it as convenience fee. It has netflix features but for all movies and tv shows.

prole, (edited )

I understand why people do it, but for me itā€™s a principle thing. Iā€™m not going to pay someone for content they stole. Fuck that.

I generally donā€™t have a problem with copyright infringement, but people who make a profit from it are scumbags.

halm,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

And like I said, I get convenience/availability. I guess paying for stolen goods is one step too far for me. Like, ā€œDude, pass it around, but itā€™s not yours to sellā€.

Mnemnosyne,

If someone makes it so I can stream all the shows and all the movies and such in one convenient place, without having to find them myself, hunt down the right versions, etc, Iā€™m good with paying them for that.

Itā€™d be better if it was from a legal service, but as long as exclusives are allowed that canā€™t happen. If the owners of the content were required to allow anyone who wants to distribute it to do so, at the same cost with no special deals for one distributor over another, then every streaming service could have everything, if they choose. They could then compete on quality of service and which content they choose to have, not on what content they can lock down for themselves alone.

moon, in want to get started but finding the technical side really overwhelming

The first thing you need is your pirate ship and your crew. Pirates steal, so I recommend just going to a nearby port and cause a mutiny. Youā€™ll need a pirate crew for this, so youā€™ll need to go to your local tavern and bribe a few scallywags with some coin and beer. Before you set of to see, I recommend you get up to date on your sea shantys and have a large stockpile of cannonballs. Have fun sailing the seas!

I am unsure of the warranty process with WD but my guess is that it is past warranty if you bought it third party. Highly reccomend not using eBay or Amazon for important things since there seem to be lots of reviews of people receiving returned products or having to jump through hoops with the manufacturer.

As an alternative I would reccomend places like Bestbuy or Newegg from now on. In the meantime, Iā€™ve heard eBay has a good return policy through paypal but cannot verify, you may be anle to at least get your money back. If you send it to the manufacturer and they refurbish or replace it they should stand by their warranty with the replacement as well.

I understand wanting to be frugal but for a lot of things you rely on they should not be third party. Also the Best Buy I go to has a price match with Amazon, so they may match eBay, worth a shot.

herrcaptain,

I can only speak anecdotally, but Iā€™ve bought dozens of used network/server components and refurb drives off eBay over the past few years and havenā€™t had a single bad experience. Once a seller forgot to send one of two cables I ordered and immediately shipped the second on their dime. As long as youā€™re buying from sellers with good feedback youā€™re likely going to be fine. That said, I canā€™t speak to their warranty system as Iā€™ve never used it.

Also, if I recall correctly Newegg got bought by some conglomerate a few years back and has apparently started the process of enshitiffication. Thatā€™s just something I recall hearing though - I think Iā€™ve only ever shopped with them once, years back.

baconman1945,

For work, we bought a Dell desktop off Newegg, and when it arrived, it had different brand and quality components than advertised on Newegg. We returned it no problem, but we havenā€™t used Newegg since then. Just one experience, but it affirms enshittification.

AVeryCleverName,
