probably for billing?

ProfessorYakkington, in OneNote Alternatives

I’ve used StandardNotes for years. They are great, very privacy friendly and lots of good features. I’ve also used Obsidian like others have mentioned but I didn’t use 95% of the features on either standard notes or Obsidian – now days I just use a general markdown files and store them in a git repo – low complexity and I like the simplicity of it. 100% recommend.

FlihpFlorp,

I’ll give it standard notes shot. Does it have the ability to hand write notes. It also has its own cloud saves and a manual local save if I’m reading that right so that sounds perfect for proton drive since someone else said obsidian has a weird autosave

Gooey0210, (edited ) in Requested Review: AppCrypt by Cisdem

Why not just using app pinning?

Also, there are some other apps, or even launchers that can do this

starlord,

For desktop?

Gooey0210,

Ah, sorry, i misunderstood, i thought you’re looking for something on android, plus optionally desktop, sorry, sorry, sorry 🙏

Good thing I got rid of my Dropbox years ago.

Vanth, in I'm looking for email providers that don't require a phone number to use with reddit
@Vanth@reddthat.com avatar

Proton freebie account doesn’t have a phone number requirement to sign up. They do say they sometimes require “human verification”. Idk what that means and didn’t have to provide any identifying information to open an account.

Account recovery is a separate question. If you lose access and want some backup option to verify via a separate email account, obviously the alt email address would have to be provided to use that feature.

eramseth, in I'm looking for a privacy respecting vacuum robot

I’ve had several brands. I’m sure none were privacy respecting. But beyond that they’re all crap. They all break down and end up requiring near constant maintenance. They also don’t do a very good job of vacuuming.

Better off getting a half decent vacuum (extra points if it uses bags because… Bagless is fucking stupid) and for little clean up jobs get a manual sweeper like some restaurants use.

sic_semper_tyrannis, in Mullvad halves my internet speeds — is there a fix?

Put your VPN on a device with a fast CPU. That’ll help with speeds. Also be sure you’re using the wireguard protocol

markkdark, in How to prevent link hijacking on sites like Facebook, Reddit and Twitter?

I use LibreWolf and maximum protection just for FB and similar web pages, and Firefox for normal browsing or other safe sites and my problem is solved.

Well. That doesn’t solve this problem. But thank you.

Anonymouse, in How to prevent link hijacking on sites like Facebook, Reddit and Twitter?

If it’s showing at the bottom of the browser, then the browser thinks the link is a regular link, but clicking or copying it may invoke some JavaScript that either manipulates the link or simply redirects to the tracker site after an onClick event. I’d like to see this for my own curiosity. If my thought is correct, then there should be some way to disable that specific method call with uBlock or some other mechanism. I’m curious what happens with a text based browser or screen reader type browser. You could also trace the JavaScript and see what’s happening. If this is really happening with the big social media sites, it’s just a matter of time until a plugin is developed to correct the behavior.

blocking the intermediate domain works for me with twitter, it fails the first time and gives up trying to rewrite.

It's almost 2024 and we still don't have any significant open source project for cloud storage privacy.

Nextcloud,
Protondrive,
Bare os self hosted ? Termux + rsync or scp + bash,

Its just an “niche” business the privacy for now, except VPN 😑😑🙄

toastal,

rsync was created in 1996

stewsters,

It really depends what you are using it for and how safe you want to be.

You could just use syncthing to keep a directory on your laptop synced with your home desktop. Still goes down if your home burns though.

You could do it with your friends house if you don’t mind him being able to see your stuff. You could even have backups saved somewhere else.

It’s a lot of work and cognitive load for the average person though.

Link,

Nextcloud?

qooqie, in What do you think about paid search engines like Neeva or Kagi?

From what I’ve read on here the people that use them like them. If you value your privacy enough to pay for a search engine you’ll probably like it. I believe I’ve seen Kagi mentioned the most
