There’s also this thing: fcast.org

I haven’t tried it, but it looks promising.

Oh, and it’s also MIT licensed, unlike another FUTO project.

Roku supports chromecast (and airplay, if/when needed)

Jellyfin is so much better than Plex

Vexz,

Imo only in terms of privacy. I tried it a few times over like two to three days but I always went back to Plex. Jellyfin is a nice piece of software though. I can imagine my switch will happen in a few years.

possiblylinux127,

Its better in terms of basicly everything for me. Plex is a pain and simply isn’t as polished

MayonnaiseArch,
@MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org avatar

You must be kidding? Jellyfin is years behind in every aspect except being free software. The best part is that you can’t disable transcoding, which is either insane, malicious or plain incompetent. As soon as that’s an option we can start talking about the rest of it

possiblylinux127,

We clearly have had very different experiences. Transcoding is optional and you can change it in the media player settings. (It works a lot like YouTube)

Also transcoding requires very little overhead on Intel systems so I would just transcode to the resolution of your device.

MayonnaiseArch,
@MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org avatar

Well sure, I meant disabling transcoding and having it play anything. And it’s not about overhead, it’s just that I want to decide what my hardware does - I don’t want transcoding at all, ever, never ever. Not even when I’m using mobile data. The problem was always that jellyfin simply can’t play files which any player can play. I understand I didn’t really say what the issue was, sort of thought playing media files should be the bar

Please open an bug ticket!

I’ve used Jellyfin for years and not had any issues with playback, let alone every single video file.

Additionally, I’ve been a programmer on the Roku client for over a year and again, never heard of someone having an issue playing every single video.

MayonnaiseArch,
@MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org avatar

Not every single one, just the ones I tried. My tv can play anything using videolan or nova player, or anything else for that matter. I have to install jellyfin again, will do. It’s been very strange for me, with people praising jelly when it just never worked for me. And I avoided plex like the plague, but for some reason it works. Anyway, will check and file

Thisis how you disable transcoding.

If a website requires so few characters that I have to create custom rule in my password manager for it… then it’s a website I’m strongly inclined not to use.

Sadly, a lot of these websites deal with finances or employment.

Paypal lol. Literally my most insecure password

wincing_nucleus073,

you know what’s funny. in paypal you are not even allowed to make a secure password. they have a short character limit.

Yesss my shortest Password. Fuck Paypal I only have it for weird stuff and that Indian Developer that still maintains LineageOS Android 14 for my Nokia phone

    All Plex authentication goes through Plex managed servers. There is no local option unless that has recently changed.

    Ok fair point. I still won’t use Plex for a lot of reasons, but good to know

    sic_semper_tyrannis, in Best alternative to Chromecast?

    This is not my preferred option (other comment suggestions are more privacy respecting) but just so you have more information, Roku TVs have Miracast built in.

    If we could audit individuals’ passwords across services, I’ll bet the duplicate and weak passwords found would likely be terrifying.

    “Commandment of celibacy”???

    I am pretty sure that’s not a thing? Like that’s not one of the big ten. I don’t remember Jesus saying anything about commanding it, though he said to accept it if you can. I do remember stuff about rich people, though. That may be relevant considering they’re spending $4mil to go after gay priests…

    captainlezbian,

    Yeah celibacy is about inheritance not Jesus in Catholicism. Do they think the guy who convinced multiple men to ditch their wives and kids to wander the desert with a bunch of men was really that into celibacy and men not getting it on?

    winterayars,

    I think they think he’s gay and that’s the real reason.

    tygerprints,

    I'm willing to bet he isn't. Most priests who engage in same sex acts with underage kids (for example) are not gay and have never wanted any kind of adult gay relationship. I only point this out because people think that priests = gay. Most same-sex pedophiles aren't gay and have no desire for normal adult gay relationships at all.

    Pronell,

    A new monk arrived at the monastery. He was assigned to help the other monks in copying the old texts by hand. He noticed, however, that they were copying copies, not the original books. The new monk went to the head monk to ask him about this. He pointed out that if there were an error in the first copy, that error would be continued in all of the other copies.

    The head monk said, ‘We have been copying from the copies for centuries, but you make a good point, my son.’ The head monk went down into the cellar with one of the copies to check it against the original.

    Hours later, nobody had seen him, so one of the monks went downstairs to look for him. He heard a sobbing coming from the back of the cellar and found the old monk leaning over one of the original books, crying.

    He asked what was wrong.

    ‘The word is ‘celebrate,’ not ‘celibate’!’ sobbed the head monk.

    I’ve come across a few sites that require one upper case, one number and one symbol (from a short list). Not at least one of each, no no, precisely one of each. One site even forced the password length to be exact -_-

    I just got the Nvidia Shield Pro (2019) model on sale during BF sale, totally a game changer for us! Although some tweaks are needed when first setup, such as ProjectIvy to replace AndroidTV bloat screen and Button Remapper to remap Netflix button on the remote to whatever else you want it to launch.

    Awe,
    @Awe@lemmy.ml avatar

    Fun fact for shield owners:

    If you block this domain with your dns ad blocker, the default launcher will only show ads for the YouTube, Google TV, and Google Play Store apps (not individual shows). I find these to be far less annoying as they use muted tones.

    androidtvwatsonfe-pa.googleapis.com

    If you have already setup your device and currently see ads, you need to reset the android tv home application data to get rid of them. This will temporarily show you the old dashboard, but the new one will load eventually (without ads).

    LunchEnjoyer,
    @LunchEnjoyer@lemmy.world avatar

    Nice one, although I personally find it better to use Project Ivy or any other custom launcher instead.
