Aurenkin, in Reddit must share IP addresses of piracy-discussing users, film studios say

Do we really have to go through this shit again? As long as you refuse to make watching movies convenient and reasonably priced, people will pirate. You were already so close, but then you got greedy and fucked it all up again so here we are.

Anticorp, (edited )

They really had achieved the dream. They made a streaming account affordable and more convenient than pirating, so they had tons of customers, with piracy a long lost pastime for people like me. Then they got greedy like you said, and annoying, and many of us dusted off our sailing gear.

Aurenkin,

While streaming services have been undergoing enshittification, the tools for piracy have been getting more convenient too.

hitmyspot,

The arrs are amazing. I had been out for a while. It’s more fun than streaming. Random stuff shows up that I wasn’t expecting when it downloads a new show or moviess that I like.

Anticorp,

What are the arrs?

hitmyspot,

Radarr, sonarr, prowlarr and others. Apps that monitor your library, your preferred shows and movies and download them automatically for better quality or just new releases. Particularly good for tv shows.

Anticorp,

For real! Stremio+Real-Debrid is amazing. The fact that you can stream torrent now is so cool.

In response to such critiques [concerning the decline of quality], Reddit spokesperson Rathschmidt said he did not “know of an industry benchmark for scoring content quality”.

My sides went into orbit. It’s a Reddit spokesperson acting like the worst of the Reddit userbase: being passive aggressive and using appeal to ignorance, at the same time.

I left Reddit forever because they were going out of their way to actively make the site worse for literally no other reason than corporate greed. Then they were unbelievably smug about it and insisted it was actually a good thing somehow. Then they tried to gloss over the whole thing by letting everyone play graffiti artist on a virtual wall for a few days, after which they pretended everything was normal again.

Fuck Reddit.

RGB3x3,

Went back recently and found that the “back” functionality was broken. Literally, going back out of a post didn’t take me to the main feed, it brought me back to the new tab screen.

How does a site as big as reddit screw up basic navigation?

Nythos,

On the Reddit app you can’t even sort by most popular on your newsfeed, you’re stuck with just one sort for all your subs.

spider, (edited )

And how do they still not have something as basic as a preview button for posting comments? We have that here.

MrFappy, (edited ) in Reddit must share IP addresses of piracy-discussing users, film studios say

These companies are just mad that their movies sucked and didn’t make any money, so they’re saying they’re losing profit from piracy… what profit?!?! No one wants to watch Hellboy 2019 for free, much less put in the time and effort to pirate that garbage. And if they are, then I feel like having to watch any fragment of that movie is punishment enough.

bradboimler,

I agree watched that movie one time i would defiantly never buy that movie.

beckerist,

A matter of DEFIANCE!

thanks_shakey_snake,
VaultBoyNewVegas,

Honestly, I don’t see a problem with pirating a movie that came out 5+ years ago. After a movie has left cinemas and can only be seen via DVD/blueray are the studios really making much money back from those? They’re definitely not making any money on DVDs/bluerays bought from secondhand stores.

space,

And why the hell would I buy a region locked Blu-ray, and be forced to watch through those FBI piracy screens?

I feel like it’s unfortunate they didn’t highlight the open source options where the customer is not the product as their article closer, but rather of a quote about how Reddit could be such a better place. Seems to entirely miss the point.

No surprise there; it’s the same mainstream media that rarely acknowledges the existence of Linux or third-party political candidates.

They also quote one user multiple times throughout the article. Well, two if you count the deleted comment.

Reposts, outrage bait, horny bait (98% of OldSchoolCool) and whOleSomE bait

Fuck no

I still use a modded client to lurk on niche subs, but I completely avoid “all”

slaacaa, (edited )

I have been back occasionally when searching for some specific thing, and sometimes I checked r/all and my former favorite subs. My overall observation:

  • Top subs already sucked before the API changes, still looking bad. I don’t have too much comparison, as I wasn’t following them anyway, but I would be surprised if they improved
  • My former favorite niche subs went downhill, with lower frequency and quality of content. I assume this is due to some mods and powerusers leaving

Overall, reddit is still useful as an occasional information source for checking public opinion/sentiment on specific things, but for me, it’s appeal as a general “time-waster” social media, where I keep scrolling for an hour and leave comments is gone.

breadsmasher, in Reddit is apparently a free-for-all for scammers and anyone with bad intentions to post libel.
@breadsmasher@lemmy.world avatar

Is your reddit account tied to your real life information? Why are you consulting lawyers for trolls taking the piss out of you on reddit?

MaximilianKohler, (edited )

Yes, I was a public figure on reddit. And even if I wasn’t, it’s irrelevant. You don’t need to have a reddit account for scammers to post libel about you and your business.

breadsmasher,
@breadsmasher@lemmy.world avatar

And what damages can you calculate caused by the libel?

MaximilianKohler,

That would be quite difficult due the nature of my project. But certainly I could calculate some; monetary and reputation.

breadsmasher,
@breadsmasher@lemmy.world avatar

And can you prove the comments were false/lies/intending to mislead?

For example, if you made a product which accidentally explodes and hurts someone, and they post about it on reddit, it wouldn’t be libel.

If someone is telling lies, that would be grounds. But only worth it if theres significant repetitional harm.

Also, what if people are in a different country? Different laws on libel?

MaximilianKohler,

And can you prove the comments were false/lies/intending to mislead?

Yes, very easily.

breadsmasher,
@breadsmasher@lemmy.world avatar

But financially and reputational damage is next to nothing?

MaximilianKohler,

Not sure what you mean.

breadsmasher,
@breadsmasher@lemmy.world avatar

supersquirrel, in Reddit seeks to launch IPO in March

Can we make an enshittification graphic that you can put a website/product on and track it as it goes through the enshittification cycle? We gotta move Reddit from stage 1 enshittification to stage 2 enshittification (going for an IPO).

Stage 2 involves a disorienting attempt to portray everything as fine with the website/product when in actuality enshittification is aggressively accelerating.

SeedyOne,

That’s a pretty cool idea for a website, tracking the enshittification of major sites and products. I’d read it but I’m sure it’d be a lot of depressing, hard to monetize work for those involved to run.

prongs,

And I’m sure inevitably, the site will become harder to run as more and more companies enter the shit list. Over time - features will be cut to save effort. List entry will be out sourced. The company itself, of course, will not see the irony. Finally - a new website emerges to track the enshittification of enshittification tracking websites. And the prophecy continues.

possiblylinux127, in How social media's biggest user protest rocked Reddit

Well I’m here now so that’s what matters.

voracitude, in Reddit is apparently a free-for-all for scammers and anyone with bad intentions to post libel.

It’s not up to Reddit to decide what is libel under the law (yet), that’s the court’s job, but even if it were on Reddit what would you expect them to do? Ban the people? They’ll make new accounts. IP ban? VPN.

Your real goal here is to make the people stop posting what you say are lies, and the only real recourse is legal. Find a lawyer, you might be able to get someone to work on contingency if your case is solid.

MaximilianKohler,

even if it were on Reddit what would you expect them to do?

Supposedly they have dedicated “anti-evil” teams that deal with this type of thing.

Ban the people? They’ll make new accounts. IP ban? VPN.

Reddit can deal with that much easier than lawyers can. It would be a continual, massive money-sink to use legal action to continually take down the new accounts. Whereas reddit can track trends and things that are occurring on their own website much easier. They already deal with stuff like this on a regular basis in regards to spam, etc.

that’s the court’s job

Find a lawyer, you might be able to get someone to work on contingency if your case is solid

It doesn’t appear that defamation is something lawyers take on contingency. They all asked for a retainer and hourly rate and made it sound like it might not even be possible even after spending tens of thousands of dollars.

Ideally you’d be able to simply go to a judge and show that the info was defamation and get an order for reddit to take it down, but apparently it doesn’t work like that, and you have to hunt down the individual people behind the accounts and be able to get them to court.

voracitude, (edited )

They all asked for a retainer and hourly rate and made it sound like it might not even be possible even after spending tens of thousands of dollars.

Yes, much like HTML the law is an interpreted language and it’s never certain how a judge or jury will interpret it, no matter how good an argument your lawyer makes.

Reddit can deal with that much easier than lawyers can. It would be a continual, massive money-sink to use legal action to continually take down the new accounts.

Betraying your naïveté there; you have it backwards. Reddit are the ones that would be playing whack-a-mole with accounts. Proper legal discovery (yes, against Reddit, they will respond to a subpoena) would get the IP addresses and maybe personal info of the posters. Trivial to find which company owns an IP using a tool like mxtoolbox.com. Then, subpoena the ISP for the subscriber that IP was assigned to in a window of time, around when the comment was posted, your lawyers contact them with a scary letter and hopefully they stop. If they don’t, you then have to go to court to get a court order or injunction or whathaveyou. And if they still persist, then you have to go to court again to enforce the previous judgement and probably apply stricter consequences.

That’s how it works. Yes, it’s expensive, and yes that bars some from getting justice. Yes that sucks, and I wish it was different. But it is the (legal) solution to your problem.

MaximilianKohler,

A subpoena would do nothing if they were using a VPN, and if they were in another country I expect it would be just as difficult/impossible.

Taking legal action doesn’t stop a whack-a-mole.

But it is the (legal) solution to your problem.

Yes, I noted that in the OP.

voracitude, (edited )

Taking legal action stops the problem at the source, thus no need for whack-a-mole. The law is less about prevention and more about remedy, because this isn’t Minority Report.

Regardless, if you’re now going to make the argument that Reddit has or “should have” more power to stop this kind of thing than the US legal system, then I’m gonna have to bow out. I’m sorry there’s not a more satisfying answer than the one you’ve gotten. Good luck.

TWeaK, in Reddit seeks to launch IPO in March

Reddit, which filed confidentially for its IPO in December 2021, is planning to make its public filing in late February, launch its roadshow in early March, and complete the IPO by the end of March, two of the sources said.

Should be interesting to see people pick apart the filing. I think it’s obvious why they left such a narrow window from reading the filing (which was 2 years ago, before the API change and all the backlash) to the actually offering. However, I don’t think it will be short enough for them to not be held over the fire.

Just wait, they will be heavily moderating the discussion about the filing on their platform.
