topinambour_rex, in Nah we can’t do that, right?
@topinambour_rex@lemmy.world avatar

Then you divide by x.

merc, in Nah we can’t do that, right?

There’s no reason it shouldn’t work.

dy/dx is the same as (y1 - y2) / (x1 - x2) as the distance between the two points approaches zero. “dx” and “dy” aren’t very useful measurements on their own though.

onion, in Nah we can’t do that, right?

If I remeber right you can do that, because there’s a longer and proper way that arrives at the same conclusion

Successful_Try543,

Yes, and what is aimed for is separation of variables to find a solution of this differential equation. (The differential operator d should be printed as upright letter btw)

marcos,

Just like any kind of mathematics ever.

You can also do it with numbers, because there’s a longer and proper way that arrives on the same conclusion.

maeries,

Exept when there isn’t

True science! Without compassion, decency, and humanity.

Yay…

Haus, in Nah we can’t do that, right?
@Haus@kbin.social avatar

You can't multiply both sides by dx in much the same way you can't differentiate a duck. That said, even pure mathematicians sort of think of it that way as a useful shorthand.

photonic_sorcerer, in Nah we can’t do that, right?
@photonic_sorcerer@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Yes, yes we can!

BluJay320, in Remove all barriers in the way of science
@BluJay320@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Well, I wouldn’t say all barriers…

Ethical matters, such as experimentation on animals and especially humans, need barriers in place. We don’t need another Josef Mengele

But I agree with the intended sentiment

Tar_alcaran,

Also, we need barriers related to quality, otherwise you get shit like Andrew Wakefield trying to sell his alternative vaccine, and in the process creating the modern antivax movement

They didn't sacrifice their lives, they were abused and killed against their will.

Calling it sacrifice is pretty disgusting.

CookieJarObserver,
@CookieJarObserver@sh.itjust.works avatar

And? Do you want to test on humans or what?

MildlyArdvark,

That’s irrelevant. The comment was about the choice of words. It’s simply false to say the mice sacrificed themselves. If anything they were sacrificed by us humans.

Duke_Nukem_1990,

Hey!! How am I supposed to feel good about my human superiority complex if you come in here all rational like?? Let me be a speciesist in peace!1!1!

aeternum,

Yup. Those poor mice had all sorts of horrendous stuff done to them. They didn't sacrifice shit. They had 0 choice in the matter.

earned_myself_a_gin, in Are you interested?

Can someone explain this? Integral from 10 to 13 of 2x? It’s been a long time since calculus for me, but isn’t that like 2x² + c or something like that?

Mwallerby,

Just x²+c, but when you’re integrating between limits the +c doesn’t matter - so you’re just left with the difference between 13² and 10²…

Templa,

It isn’t that it doesn’t matter, constant of integration is only used for indefinite integrals.

eestileib, in Machine Learning is when machine learns, stupid.

Dude on the right is correct that perturbed gradient descent with threshold functions and backprop feedback was implemented before most of us were born.

The current boom is an embarrassingly parallel task meeting an architecture designed to run that kind of task.

morrowind,
@morrowind@lemmy.ml avatar

Random but why is “embarrassing” or similar adjectives so often used to describe a parallel program? What’s embarrassing about it?

Kichae,

"Embarrassingly parallelizable" is just the term for a process that can be perfectly paralleled.

morrowind,
@morrowind@lemmy.ml avatar

rather odd choice of adjective though

xthexder,
@xthexder@l.sw0.com avatar

I think the usage implies it’s so easy to parallelize that any competent programmer should be embarrassed if they weren’t running it in parallel. Whereas many classes of problems can be extremely complex or impossible to parallelize, and running them sequentially would be perfectly acceptable.

Kichae,

The current boom is an embarrassingly parallel task meeting an architecture designed to run that kind of task.

Plus organizations outside of the FAANGs having hit critical mass on data that's actually useful for mass comparison multiple correlation analyses, and data as a service platforms making things seem sexier to management in those organizations.

trailing9, in internet points

To mention the obvious, it’s the same network effect that keeps people on X and Reddit.

Enkers,

Where there’s a platform, there’s enshitification.

trailing9,

To stay obvious, what’s fascinating is that those networks are small, its members the most intelligent people available and they meet each other regularly in person at conferences.

Why do they accept the lock-in?

sigmaklimgrindset,

They may be intelligent in their fields but that doesn’t mean they think thing through in every aspect of their lives. The status quo is the easiest thing to deal with they can devote more time to their careers/research

Unless their field is in social engineering, then yeah why are they going along with it?

Lmao have fun publishing that kiddo

baseless_discourse,

I had such a hard time explaining to my family why I was working on a project for two years, and ends up with nothing publishable…

Everyone can be wrong, solving problems is what my field is looking for (I m not sure if that is fortunate or unfortunate).
