Did Gary Larson think Alexander the Great was a medieval figure? This comic looks medieval, their clothes look medieval… And I’m pretty sure he’s drawn comics of people in togas and stuff so he has some knowledge of bronze age Greece looking different from medieval Europe. Maybe he just didn’t want to overthink this one.
Yes. This is actually how humans work. We are not only social animals, but eusocial - similar to bees and ants. We are unique among primates in that regard, and one of only a few species of mammals that gets that designation (the other two being mole rats).
Not only were they a superpredator that preyed on apex predators, not only were they present in great numbers, but terrifyingly-enough, humans also worked together.
I honestly don’t get this one… Like I get the comic but unless there’s something I’m missing I don’t understand the actual joke here. I know it’s a typical Far Side “what if humans, but animals?” comic, but I don’t get what’s being swapped out here. Is the joke that flies would call the news “poop”? Is the joke that the actual news is that there is poop?
In human news they would have cliffhangers that are supposed to get people excited about staying up till 11 watch the news. So, murderer on the loose in your neighborhood, more at eleven.
In this case the thing that will get the flies excited enough to keep watching is to say there is poop coming up.
Seems like it’s meant to suggest it was a comic idea mailed in by a fan. But, I don’t believe that’s something Larson actually did/does, so the joke is that he takes fan submissions, no matter how absurd - perhaps commentary on his own work not always making sense?
