Is there any reason, like symbolic significance, behind putting the emblem and the stripes on the fly rather than on the hoist?
I am assuming that one reason a lot of flags put their devices on the hoist (or on the center) is visibility, especially when the flag waves around. Wouldn’t the devices on the Zambian flag be less visible then as they’re placed on the fly?
It definitely struck me that the emblem chosen in this manner is a bird, meant to represent an oppressed colonial territory now freed. Maybe they chose it so that the animal reprisenting Zambian freedom is far removed from the yolk of its origin? Or maybe someone just didn’t tell them it was the norm or why 🤷♂️
I’ve momentarily thought “Oh, because birds fly, right?!” but it’d be too crazy if that’s the actual reason.
Seriously speaking though, it could be for all the reasons you’ve listed: breaking conventions/norms to represent their freedom (reinforced by the bird). Idk if it’s worth it given that the symbols would be harder to see tho.
Maybe make the green a bit darker. I get that you're going for grass and a river, but that's conveyed with any green, and I think a dark green would go a lot better with the lighter blue.
As another commenter mentioned, the river would be better as a simple diagonal stripe. You don't need a complicated river shape to convey a river.
This may be limited by your drawing skill, but I think the emblem should be more complex. Right now, it's in this area where it's not simple enough (i.e., it's not just a flat, one-color shield) to match with the rest of the flag but it's not complex enough to really feel like an emblem. It stands out but doesn't quite have the complexity to warrant it, if that makes any sense.
The emblem might be better off in the middle, left, or upper left. Symbols on flags tend to go there instead of on the right, where it'll be flapping in the wind more.
Updated it a little😁https://lemmy.zip/pictrs/image/29f2cc6b-85d5-4444-be1c-df2cea45afcd.webpThe grass is more dark, I simplified the river, didnt made it a strip because I want it to convey an island. I moved the emblem to the left, someone else said to make it more simple, but I dont have ideas
The new green and the emblem on the left are definitely improvements. While I get wanting to convey an island, I think you could still do that with a more geometric shape. Maybe a stripe that splits into a circle or diamond in the middle. If you're going to have a line going diagonally across the flag, I think it's best to have it be simple and geometric.
Very interesting flag. I think it'd look better with a simpler color scheme on the device and a bit more variety to the background, but it definitely has a pretty distinctive icon.
Pretty cool. The emblem is a little complex (but looks cool, so whatever), and the lack of geometry in the blue river is frustrating, but it’s overall cool looking.
It may look better with one blue diagonal line instead of the current river like stripe. The emblem could be put in the middle if keeping its size, or put in the upper left side with smaller size
It translates as The Star of The North, or The North Star, in reference to the position of Minnesota as the northern-most contiguous US State, because of the small bit that sticks up higher than the 48th Parallel (aka The Northwest Angle).
This is cool. I'm no vexillologist, but the current Maryland flag looks like someone just clicked "Random All" on a Flag Generator and said, "That's it! Perfect! No changes!"
Nah, give me the real flag back. If this was replacing one of the “state seal on blue” flags, it’d be great. If this was a brand new flag, this would be great. But this doesn’t hold a candle to the real thing. Our Maryland flag is just awesome, and I don’t want to give it up.
