0x4E4F,

I live in Europe, but my country is not part of the EU. That’s probably EU regulations/laws.

0x4E4F,

Yeah… this doesn’t stop automatic updates… or at least it wasn’t mentioned in the description.

0x4E4F, (edited )

That is true, yes, I do agree.

But, on the other hand Windows is not open source as well and I have to use it for work or an oddball proogram here and there that just doesn’t run on Wine.

Hell, people also use a lot of closed source code in their Linux installs as well. Let’s strat with drivers and firmware binary blobs, printer drivers (binary blobs as well, depends on manufacturer) and end with NLE software like DaVinci Resolve… we use binary blobs all the time, including our phones, and even though none of us asked for that, but instead was shoved down our throat in order to be able to live in a modern society, no one seems to complain about that… but, when a random stranger suggest using something, oh no, that thing most definitely is something malicious 😒.

Run it in a sandbox for a while, see if it calls home. If it does try to call, block it with a firewall, is that so hard 😒… though I’ve never seen it even try to call home or do something malicious, and as I said, I’ve been using it for years. Also, people use a lot of their products, I have yet to see one complaint regarding any of their products doing something malcious.

0x4E4F,

Have been using it for a while, does nothing malicios, plus I’ve done some RCE on it, as far as I’m aware, there is no malicious code in it.

And I would love to know how I can stop automatic updates in Windows with a config file… cuz… you know, Windows never uses the registry for those kinds of things.

There is nothing better out there, trust me, I’ve searched. I would love to use something open source, but short of me writing it myself, there is no better solution at the moment… well, at least not for my needs.

0x4E4F,

Welcome to my world… barely enough to survive… hell, alcohol is a luxury for me 😂.

  • But, I just want a tomato slice 🥺.

  • Sir, please go to the back of the line or we will call the police.

0x4E4F, (edited )

It’s a necessity for me, not a choice 🤷. I don’t drive unless I need to, I walk or use the bike.

0x4E4F,

lol 😂, i can relate 😂.

Help, boot doesn't work anymore

I have a laptop eith sata and a nvme drive. I installed a few operating systems and I decided on Mint for Sata. Installed it copied data from Nvme drive since I was using it as primary. I installed Nobara on nvme and it worked flawless until a few moments ago. Reboted and Mint is gone from boot options. Tried to add it but...

I think out all of the answers, this one is one of the main reasons why people might feel more fake nowadays than before.

0x4E4F, (edited )

What if, let’s say, that person has something to hide… nothing dangerous or that might cause harm to others, something that society frowns upon. My reasoning is that, it would be OK to be “fake” in those circumstances.

0x4E4F,

If your power company gets shittier, and you switch to a different one, will you be thinking “oh those years I’ve thrown away my money when the service was good”?

I agree, you have a point there.

Maybe I’m just hoping that things should improve if you spend money on the service, not go worse. Maybe I just get dissapointed and regret ever paying for that service.

0x4E4F,

Finally, there’s water in the cloud 😂.

Low effort posts

Ask Lemmy is a place to ask thought provoking questions. The mods have been lenient with some of the recent posts on the basis that they must provoke thought for some people, but after seeing two posts essentially saying “what do you think of my stick?”, I believe we can raise the bar a bit on what kind of thoughts we want...

0x4E4F,

I believe no sexual thoughts went into that, as can be seen by the replies.

Are movie and show file sizes more efficient than they were years ago?

This may be a stupid question, but I just got back into pirating some shows and movies and realize that many of the QxR files are much smaller than what I downloaded in the past. Is it likely that I am sacrificing a noticeable amount of quality if I replace my files with the smaller QxR ones?...

0x4E4F,

hahaha 🤣🤣🤣, agreed 🤣.

0x4E4F, (edited )

Lol 😂. Actually, it doesn’t take 3 seconds (well, 3 seconds for the stream output, yeah), there are workstations that need to be adjusted as well, but in a course if a day or 2, yeah, you can change the whole thing 👍. You could do the cameras last, that’s not such a big problem, they can shoot interlaced for a few days, edit it that way, export it non-interlaced.

0x4E4F,

Yeah, I can related to that 😔. I work in a TV station in a country that had the PAL standard, and… well, every fucking shot is interlaced 🤦. Not only that, but the output from the station is as well 🤦. Why? Backwards compatibility… what in the actual fuck 🤦… it’s a stream, the decoder doesn’t care about that, it can decode any frame rate, any frame type, it’s all digital now 🤦. Tried explaining this, nope, we’re still doing interlaced.

And, of course, after the cable companies have their way with the signal, the output is shit… not to mention they also archive the material as interlaced 🤦… and then people from outside the station complain about the matrial being garbidge… they still don’t budge.

Just goes to show you what management is all about these days. They have the power, so they’re gonna use it any way they see fit. Why? Cuz they’re THE BOSS GOD DAMN IT 😠.

0x4E4F,

Agreed, proper h.265 support came way too late for some NLE’s.

0x4E4F,

Yeah, beats me, I was surprised as well, like why do we still have to work with AVC clips, why can’t I just import a HEVC clip… Premiere: nope, that ain’t happenin’.

0x4E4F,

Yeah, I was talking about the server and you probably can’t install it on that thing by just clicking away or doing a few terminal commands 😂.

Is there a "universal" web UI for custom Linux NASes?

Got me thinking, cuz I’ve done my own solutions (not the popular ones, like OMV and the likes) and they work just fine, I really have no trouble managing them through the terminal, but I thought about other people (maybe people that like more managing things though a web UI) and I was like “is there something like this...

0x4E4F,

There’s XPnology, but as I said, I like using my own solutuons (choose the distro and build on that).

0x4E4F,

Just search the web for the software with “full” at the end. Someone must’ve pirated it, it’s not something obscure.

0x4E4F,

Nope, but I think I’ve given enough to the community over the years.

Though I was thinking of donating to Void (maybe even some sort of a partnership, if they agree to it, which I seriously doubt) cuz I use it for business purposes as well.
