The native population had been wiped out by the malware of their own creation. Only the Linux users survived, but turned blind because they stare at their monitors and don’t go out much.
There was once a dumb-crooks news story about some burglars who broke into a house, found an urn labelled Charlie and snorted the contents, thinking it must be cocaine. It was, of course, the ashes of a pet dog named Charlie.
Gentrified takes on junk food with gratuitously expensive ingredients that are a slightly more subtle equivalent to just sprinkling everything with gold leaf like in 1990s Moscow or somewhere (“Our Southern-fried hog jowls come from rare heritage-breed hogs sourced from a tiny family-owned farm in the Outer Hebrides”)
It makes sense. A military is only as good as its logistics, and the US’ forward bases are the tips of very long spears, dependant on a lot of logistics. So you need to have the means to have a continuous pipeline of supplies to each outpost. In peacetime, you keep that open by supplying the troops with burgers, tacos, XBox games or whatever; if the shit does hit the fan, all that capacity can be diverted from tortillas and patties to ammunition, drones, amphibious landing craft or whatever, at short notice.
Whoopsie! Sydney's road planners just discovered induced demand is a thing, after opening a new motorway.
For those outside Sydney, the New South Wales state government recently opened a new spaghetti intersection just west of Sydney's Central Business District.
It was supposed to solve traffic. Instead, it's turned into a giant car park:
"For the third straight day, motorists and bus passengers endured bumper-to-bumper traffic on the City West Link and Victoria Road. A trip from Haberfield to the Anzac Bridge on the City West Link averaged an agonising 44 minutes in the morning peak on Wednesday.
"Several months ago, Transport for NSW’s modelling had suggested traffic from the interchange would add only five to 10 minutes to trips on Victoria Road through Drummoyne and over the Iron Cove Bridge during morning peaks.
"Those travel delays have now blown out."
So what do motorists say when their shiny new road that was supposed to solve traffic instead turns into a massive traffic jam?
'Dude! Just one more lane!'
From the article:
"[Roads Minister John] Graham and his Transport boss Josh Murray appear reluctant to do what many motorists reckon is the obvious solution.
"That is, add lanes or make changes at the pinch-points that are causing the pain. A three-lane to one merge point from Victoria Road onto the Anzac Bridge, along with two lanes merging into one on the City West Link, are proving to be painful bottlenecks."
They should improve the quality of food in sewers so that those who bought sex and thus reincarnated as rats and cockroaches can get a second chance in their next lives
On Windows, there is a Secure Audio Path API to prevent interception of the audio signal. Not sure if macOS has something similar, though it can prevent screenshotting of DRMed video. On Linux, any such protection is probably impossible unless Spotify requires a kernel module.
Note that the audio quality on Spotify is not very high (256kbps .ogg, I think), so anything thus recorded is going to sound lossy, especially after you recompress it a second time.
If you’re paranoid, you can convert the FLACs to WAV on an isolated computer (or VM), copy them and recompress them to FLAC or other formats. If there is a vulnerability in FLAC, it won’t persist through transcoding.
Presumably they’ve ruled out prisons in northern European countries perceived to be too humane; imagine the Sun/Daily Mail thundering about “hardworking taxpayers’ money spent to give criminal scum holidays in luxury Finnish prisons”, along with a photo of a cell that looks vastly better than the typical London rental opportunity. So I’m guessing they’ll be asking around, say, Turkey, Morocco and various former Soviet republics. Possibly the US as well, though that may involve leaving the ECHR.
Now that copyright on steamboat Willie has expired, what are the next big ones expiring?

Recording Spotify to your DAW, can this get your account banned?
Does Spotify have a way to see if your computer is recording with your DAC’s stereo mix? And if so, is there a way around it?
