What search engine do you recommend that isn't Google or Bing?

I’m still trying to de-Google my life, little by little. I don’t trust Bing for similar reasons. DDG is feeling shady of late. What’s the search engine you all recommend that I can inject into my daily life? Is there perhaps a search engine that is focused on code, or have we just all moved on to AI for searching?...

Anticorp,

It’s $5-$10 per month, not $10 per hour. LOL

Anticorp,

Kagi. Nothing else even comes close. Kagi is what Google used to be, before they decided they’ll show you whatever is profitable, rather than what they know you’re looking for.

Anticorp,

Also, why can’t I just be a peaceful barbarian?

Because barbarians get crushed under the weight of civilization.

Anticorp,

A stadium is a service to the public. Stadiums are amenities, and increase happiness among the citizens that enjoy events. Even Sid Meyer’s Civ game has an amenities concept, because they’re really important for cities. If there’s no entertainment options in the city, then all of the talented people leave. That means all of the corporations with great jobs for talented people leave too. With them goes all the money, and you’re left with urban decay and poverty. Yes, transportation is important, but so are amenities.

Anticorp,

Baseball games aren’t the only thing that happen at baseball stadiums. I agree with you about the A’s though. That’s a tragedy of a team, especially considering their previous highs.

Anticorp,

"Oh BTW, we gave the stadium to some wealthy dude, and he’ll keep all of the money the stadium makes. Don’t worry though, your tax dollars will pay for the upkeep.

Anticorp,

The problem is that to obtain those big pistons, you need the financial backing of those big companies. So eventually as an honest politician climbs the ladder, he has to sell out, or fizzle out. You can’t win federal elections without PAC money.

Toyota is very much a for-profit business, and even donated money to the Trump campaign in 2016 because of his promises of corporate tax cuts.

Ironically, my Chevy has been way more reliable than my wife’s Honda. They’re both the same year, and about the same mileage too. Actually, I think my Chevy has more mileage now, since we usually drive that, when we go out together.

Anticorp,

You can help yourself a lot here by making commits every time you make a meaningful change. A feature doesn’t need to be complete to commit major checkpoints along the path to completion. That’s what feature branches are for. Commit often. It’ll help you think of messages, and it’ll help you recover in the case of catastrophe.

Anticorp,

Or he’s living in a beach house in the Bahamas.

The DCEU ends not with a bang, but a wimper. (lemmy.ml)

10 years after Zod’s snapped neck, Martha, “some kinda Suicide Squad”, CGI moustache, rennouncing your wish, the hiearchy of power changing, and Speed Force PS1 graphics, the DC Extended Universe finally comes to a close. And it ends the same way it started - with a Rotten score....

Anticorp,

Like dinner with Margo Robbie.

Anticorp,

That was such a stupid scene in an otherwise pretty good movie.

US residents: What big domestic policy improvements have the american people won from congress in the last 30 years? (kbin.social)

Interpret improvements as you like. For me it's any large scale reforms or legislative packages designed to improve the country for all or see to the material interests of the majority without overly benefiting the elite....

Anticorp,

?? Nutrition labels have been on food my entire life, and I’m almost 50. Has something about them changed in the last 30 years?

Anticorp,

Maybe your brain is like “oh shit, maybe I need some oxygen too!”

Does "Rock music is evil / of the devil" have racist roots?

As a Christian most of the circles I’m around are pretty chill…no stone-cold fundamentalists. But I have been around people (and even had family members) who are 100% convinced that rock music is evil and will lead people to engage in witchcraft and draw pentagrams all over their home....

I had to sit through a poorly made documentary at church as a kid about how Star Wars was evil. Star Wars, which Lucas made to be as generic good vs evil as possible, was labeled as evil by my church. I can pinpoint that as one of the moments in childhood where I started becoming critical of the views of my church, and questioning the things they were telling me. Another key moment was when they had a young man go up to the podium and give his testimony. He talked all about how he was living a life of partying, rock-and-roll, and sex, and then found his way back to the church. I vividly remember thinking “well if that’s an option, that’s the road I’ll take too! Sounds like fun!”. My church did a lot of things like that which had the opposite effect they intended.

Anticorp, (edited )

That’s a completely different perspective than I’ve ever heard in church. I grew up in a fundamentalist household and the whole “rock is of the devil” attitude was fueled mostly by artists like Black Sabbath and Danzig, where they have a demonic stage presence, and lyrics which are worldly. Danzig used actual devil imagery and pentagrams in his media, and Ozzie was known as the Prince of Darkness, so the Christians weren’t really reaching to say that the artists were opposed to Christianity. Your interpretation probably has much older roots in Southern Baptist movements, which aren’t prevalent in all denominations.

Anticorp,

If you message cross-platform from Android to iOS, and you can’t get everyone to agree upon a 3rd party app, then you’re kind of stuck with sms. This isn’t a problem that is going away in the near future. Apple relies on their locked messaging platform to influence their users into thinking iOS is the best. The users then pressure all of their friends to get iPhones too. It’s an effective strategy for them. Very few iPhone users seem to understand the games being played.

Anticorp,

Isn’t Santa omniscient? He should already know where the presents are, so he must be a sadist.

Anticorp,

Are they mechanical keyboards, with recessed key wells, and ergonomic mice? If not, it still sucks for people with RSI.

Anticorp,

Plus you’re stuck using your stupid laptop keyboard unless you want to lug a keyboard and mouse around. It’s really sucky for people who have carpal tunnel and need special mice and keyboards.

Anticorp,

I’m pretty sure the middle guy is a time traveling bro, and the guy on the right is Walter White.
